Ford recalls F-series pickups over reduced visibility

Dearborn, MI – September 15, 2026 – Ford (NYSE:F) is recalling 47,587 pickup trucks whose rearview cameras may not show the right image when backing up. The defect reduces visibility, which ups the chances of a crash and injury.

The following models are affected:

  • 2021 – 2023 Ford F-150
  • 2023 – 2026 Ford F-250 SD

Recall summary

The infotainment display has an overlay menu for navigating through various features and functions. In the affected trucks, this menu may remain on screen when shifted into reverse due to a software error, which obstructs the rearview camera image.

Recall risks

An absence of a clear and complete rearview camera image reduces visibility, making it more likely for the driver to crash into surrounding pedestrians or objects while backing up.

Increased regulatory pressure

This recall comes at a time when Ford faces heightened scrutiny after a U.S. government investigation that saw the manufacturer pay $165 million as a penalty for not prioritizing the “safety of the American public,” as reported.

In addition to paying the fee, Ford agreed to make significant improvements to how it manages recalls. These measures include accelerating the company’s recall decision-making process, as well as reviewing earlier recalls to ensure they included all of the affected vehicles.

Other Ford recalls

In July 2026, more than half a million Ford Expedition SUVs were recalled over sharp interior trim that could have injured occupants

That same month, Ford recalled nearly 11,000 F-150 pickups with faulty transmissions. The issue should have been resolved during a 2017 recall, but later analysis found the software update repair was not performed correctly.

 The repair

Ford will release an over-the-air (OTA) software update to fix the issue. Owners can also take their cars to the nearest dealership to have the update performed by dealers.

Either option will be provided free of charge.

Notifications to the owners will be mailed between September 21, 2026 and October 23, 2026.
