Torrance, CA – August 20, 2026 – Honda (NYSE:HMC) is recalling 440,830 2018-2022 Honda Odyssey minivans whose airbags may accidentally deploy. This defect ups the chances of an injury.
The recall comes on the back of a U.S. government investigation and dozens of injury reports.
Recall summary
The airbag control module activates the vehicle’s airbags based on motion sensor readings. In the affected minivans, the module may mistake impacts from “speed bumps and potholes” as a collision, causing second and third-row side airbags and curtains to deploy.
Recall risks
An airbag that deploys when it should not may injure occupants.
The background of the recall
The recall is the result of an ongoing investigation by the U.S. government auto safety regulator, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), which was opened last October following 18 complaints of inadvertent air bag deployment.
Leading up to the recall, the carmaker received 130 warranty claims and 25 reports of injury. No fatalities have been reported.
Other Honda recalls
In September 2025, Honda recalled more than 17,000 Acura SUVs whose power steering could have malfunctioned.
On a separate note, the carmaker is currently being investigated by the US government over complaints of stalled vehicles due to a seized engine.
The repair
The dealers will reprogram the airbag’s control module free of charge to make it less sensitive. This repair will be free of charge. Owners were set to be notified by May 25, 2026.
