Auburn Hills, MI – July 15, 2026 – Stellantis (NYSE:STLA), which owns the Jeep brand, is recalling 61,711 2019-2023 Jeep Cherokee SUVs that may lose motive power or roll away when parked. This defect ups the chances of a crash, injury or property damage.
This is an expansion of three previous recalls, with the first one dating back to June 2020.
Recall summary
A power transfer unit (PTU) connects the engine and transmission to the wheels. In the affected SUVs, the PTU’s internal parts may break, stopping power delivery to the wheels and rendering the Park gear inoperable.
Recall risks
A vehicle that loses motive power may get hit by oncoming traffic, while the inability to park the car securely can cause it to roll down a slope. Both situations increase the risk of an injury or property damage.
Warning signs
Apart from a “Service 4WD message” on the dashboard, the driver may notice unusual noises and vibrations or experience changes in drive quality.
Background of the recall
Jeep initially recalled a batch of older Cherokee SUVs with disintegrating PTUs in June 2020. Later analysis, however, revealed that certain newer models are also affected by this problem, which led to two subsequent recalls, one in April 2023 and the other in April 2025.
Between January 2020 and May 2026, the automaker received “9 customer assistance records, 387 warranty claims, 5 field reports, and 16 other service records” related to the issue.
At least one accident and one injury occurred as the result of this defect.
Other Jeep recalls
In March 2026, more than 80,000 Jeep Grand Cherokees were recalled because their rear suspensions could have collapsed.
In December 2025, Jeep recalled more than 112,000 SUVs that could have suffered from a catastrophic engine failure.
The repair
The carmaker is currently developing a remedy. Once available, it will be free of charge.
Notifications to the owners were set to be mailed between June 25, 2026 and June 26, 2026.
