Ford recalls new Explorer SUVs over risk of stall, rollaway

Dearborn, MI – May 2, 2025 – Ford (NYSE:F) is recalling 24,655 2025 Ford Explorer SUVs that may lose power or roll away. These defects increase the risk of a crash and injury.

Recall summary  

The Powertrain Control Module (PCM) is a computer that controls the engine’s and transmission’s operation. In the affected SUVs, the PCM may reset while driving due to a software error, causing a loss of motive power. This may also cause damage to the park gear mechanism.

A damaged park gear mechanism may not hold the car on the incline, causing it to roll away if the electronic parking brake is not engaged.  

Recall risks

A stalled SUV can be hit by other vehicles while a rollaway may result in injuries and property damage.

The recall comes on the heels of 366 warranty claims but luckily, no crashes or injuries have been reported.

Warning signs

A PCM reset will trigger a Malfunction Indicator Light (MIL) on the dashboard. In addition, the transmission may be difficult to shift in or out of Park, indicating damage to its internal components.  

Safety tips

Make sure the electronic parking brake is engaged before leaving the vehicle to prevent a rollaway.

Other Ford recalls

In April 2025, Ford recalled Bronco Sport SUVs and Maverick pickup trucks over a stalling issue that was not repaired in a previous recall.  

In March 2025, Ford Explorer and Lincoln Aviator SUVs were recalled because their seat belts did not  provide sufficient protection in a crash, as reported. 

The repair

The dealers will update the PCM software and repair any damage to the transmission. Both  repairs will be done free of charge. 

The owners should receive letters with more information between May 26, 2025, and May 30, 2025.
