Ford recalls Lincoln Navigator and Corsair SUVs over defective seat belt chimes

Dearborn, MI – January 21, 2023 – Ford (NYSE:F), which owns the Lincoln brand, is recalling 101,001 vehicles over a problem with the seat belt warning system. The issue could prevent the drivers from buckling up, augmenting the risk of an injury in a crash.   

The recall covers the following SUVs:

  • 2020 – 2023 Lincoln Navigator
  • 2020 – 2022 Lincoln Corsair

Recall summary

The seat belt warning system is a safety feature that delivers an audible sound when it detects that the driver is not wearing the seat belt after the engine has been started. Due to a software error, part of the chime may be muted, causing it to play for less than four seconds. 

The part involved in this recall is the audio head unit with multiple part numbers, including PJ7T-18D890-SC, LC5T-18K810-JC and MC5T-18D890-SC.    

Recall risks

A seat belt warning chime that is partially inaudible may do an inadequate job of reminding drivers to put on their seat belts before driving the car. This could lead them to drive without it, presenting an increased risk of injury if a crash occurs.   

Other Ford recalls

In April of last year, there was a Lincoln Navigator recall due to trailer brakes, which may fail to engage when applied, as reported. The recall also included other vehicles.

In July 2022,  Ford was sued by owners of the 2021 Expedition and 2021 Lincoln Navigator SUVs who alleged that the manufacturer waited too long to recall these vehicles over risk of fire. On January 13, 2023, the lawsuit was dismissed, according to court records.

In December 2022, Ford issued a second recall for 521,778 SUVs including the 2021-2023 Ford Bronco Sport and 2020-2023 Ford Escape. This was over reports of a defect with the fuel injectors, leading to fire in the engine bay and an increased risk of injury. 

The repair

Dealers will update the audio control module software on the affected vehicles free of charge. Ford will reimburse owners who paid for their own repair before the recall was issued.

Owners of affected vehicles will be notified between February 6, 2023 and February 10, 2023.

Ford recalls pickup trucks that may stall or roll away

Dearborn, MI – December 17, 2022 – Ford (NYSE:F) is recalling 18,808 vehicles that may lose power or roll away because of a fractured driveshaft. The latter is a component that transfers engine power to the wheels to propel the vehicle forward.

This increases the risk of a crash. 

The recall includes the following vehicles:

  • 2017 – 2018 F-250 Super Duty
  • 2017 – 2018 F-350 Super Duty
  • 2017 – 2018 F-450 Super Duty

Recall summary

Radial dampers are circular mechanisms that are used to limit uncontrolled movement inside the driveshaft.

In the subject vehicles, the dumbbell-shaped radial damper may move out of position due to the rubber covering becoming deformed over time. This could eventually lead to the fracture of the driveshaft.

Recall risks

The defect can result in a loss of drive power. A vehicle rollaway is also possible if the parking brake is not engaged when the vehicle is parked. These Ford driveshaft issues increase the risk of a crash.

Warning signs

Tell-tale signs related to this Ford F-Series issue include “noise, vibration, or harshness (NVH) symptoms observable to a driver.”

Other recent Ford recalls

One of the most recent Ford truck recalls over a similar matter was in August, where nearly 60,000 F-150 trucks were recalled for the risk of stall and rollaway.

In early December, Ford issued a recall of more than half a million Escape and Bronco vehicles over fire risk. This was the second recall for the same issue, prompted by more than 50 complaints and more than 40 legal claims.

In November, Bronco vehicles were subjected to another recall. This time, more than 40,000 vehicles were included in the rearview image display fault.

The repair

Dealers will replace the driveshaft at no cost. Owners can expect to be notified about the repair program between January 9, 2023 and January 13, 2023.

Ford issues second recall for Bronco and Escape SUVs after multiple fires, injuries

Dearborn, MI – December 4, 2022 – Ford (NYSE:F), is recalling 521,778 SUVs that may develop a fuel leak, which may cause a fire inside the engine compartment.

This is the second recall for the same issue that follows on the heels of 54 complaints of under the hood fires and several injuries. Vehicles that were previously repaired will need to have the new remedy performed.

All recalled SUVs are equipped with a 1.5-liter turbocharged engine, with the following models being affected: 

  • 2021 – 2023 Ford Bronco Sport 
  • 2020 – 2023 Ford Escape

Recall summary  

The gasoline needed for the combustion process is delivered into the engine with fuel injectors. They act as valves, ensuring highly pressurized fuel is injected at the right moment. The timing is controlled by the engine control module, or ECM. 

In affected vehicles, the injector may crack, creating a fuel leak inside the engine compartment that may lead to a fire. The cause of the defect is currently under investigation.

Recall risks

Risks caused by vehicle fires are well-documented in many previous recalls, such as this one concerning RAM trucks. 

As for the present recall, at least four people have been injured leading up to this announcement. Ford is currently dealing with 43 legal claims stemming from the fires, according to the data provided by manufacturer to the U.S. auto safety regulator, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

Warning signs 

A fuel leak will most likely cause a strong gasoline odor, which may be noticeable  inside the cabin or from outside the vehicle. In addition, if escaping fuel catches fire, operators may observe smoke or flames coming from under the hood. 

Background of the recall

The problem was discovered as Ford investigated reports of fires occurring in the vehicles that previously received repairs thanks to a recall conducted back in the spring.

At least in some cases, the culprit of the fire was “likely” the defective injector.

Other Ford recalls

There was a Ford Bronco recall in late November due to malfunctioning rearview cameras, as reported.

There was a Ford Escape recall in May due to the risk of rollaway, also as reported.

In total, approximately 7.5 million Ford vehicles have been recalled over the past year, over various issues and safety-related defects. 

The repair

Dealers will update the vehicle’s control software, which will monitor the pressure within the fuel rail and detect if the injector cracks and leaks. Following the updater, a warning message will appear on the dashboard. 

In addition, a drain tube will be fitted within the engine bay, ensuring any escaping fuel does not come in contact with hot engine components. 

Notifications to vehicle owners will be sent between December 19, 2022 and December 23, 2022.

Dearborn, MI – November 20, 2022 – Ford (NYSE:F), is issuing a recall for 47,046 2021-2022 Ford Bronco SUVs over a problem with the rearview display. The screen may continue to display the image from the rear camera even after reverse gear is no longer engaged, potentially increasing the risk of a crash.

Recall summary

When reverse gear is engaged, the dashboard touchscreen displays a video feed of the area behind the vehicle as taken by the Bronco rearview camera. This guides the driver in maneuvering the vehicle to avoid obstacles and hazards.

In the affected vehicles, a software error could cause the dashboard monitor to continue displaying the image taken by the rear camera, even after the driver has already shifted from reverse gear.

Recall risks

The defect could distract the driver and increase the risk of a crash. 

Other Ford Bronco recalls

In June, Ford issued a recall for 53,103 2021-2022 Ford Bronco SUVs over a faulty child safety lock feature on the rear passenger doors, as reported.

Also part of Ford Bronco recalls was an announcement in July involving a total of 63,294 vehicles  due to detaching windshields.

The repair

Ford will deploy an over-the-air software update to fix the issue. Owners can also bring their affected vehicles to a Ford or Lincoln dealer, where the remedy will be provided free of charge. Ford will reimburse owners who had these repairs made before the recall order was announced.

Letters with more information will be mailed by December 23, 2022.

Dearborn, MI – November 8, 2022 – Ford (NYSE:F) is recalling 31,339 vehicles with inoperative heating, ventilation and air-conditioning (HVAC) system controls, which may lead to reduced visibility under certain weather conditions. This increases the risk of a crash.

This recall includes the 2022-2023 Ford Transit vehicles.

Recall summary

The Ford Transit HVAC system includes not only heating and cooling, but also the defog and defrost function, which blows air onto the windshield to clear condensation or frost.

Due to a software error, the HVAC system in the subject vehicles may stop responding to its controls.

The component in question is the software for the remote climate control module, with part numbers NK4T-18C612-AC and NK4T-18C612-BC.

Recall risks

The inability to control the defrost or defog function may limit the driver’s ability to see through the windshield, upping the risk of a crash and injury.

Other recent Ford recalls

In October, more than 11,000 Maverick pickup trucks were recalled due to brake lights that could illuminate even when the brakes were not in use. This could be confusing to other motorists and increase the risk of a crash.

In the same month, nearly 300,000 Ford and Lincoln vehicles were recalled over a cloudy rearview camera image. Any interference or obstruction to the driver’s rear view could lead to a crash, especially when reversing.

Among other Ford Transit recalls was one in mid-June, when more than 30,000 vehicles were recalled over an instrument panel malfunction. 

The repair

To remedy the Ford HVAC issue, dealers will perform an update on the remote climate control module software at no cost to owners.

Owners will be notified of the remedy program between November 7, 2022 and November 14, 2022.

Dearborn, MI – November 27, 2022 – Ford (NYSE:GM) has issued a recall for 453,650 2021-2022 F-150 pickup trucks over a problem with the windshield wipers. The wiper motor could stop working, causing the wipers to fail, increasing the risk of an accident.  

This is the second recall for the same issue that comes on the back of 1,378 warranty claims.

Recall summary

In the recalled vehicles, the electric motor responsible for operating the windshield wipers may experience electrical issues due to a supplier manufacturing issue. These could damage the circuit board inside the motor, causing the wipers to perform poorly or not at all.  

The component involved in this recall is the front wiper motor with part number ML34-17504-A.

Recall risks

Windshield wipers that work poorly or fail to work at all will not be able to clear the windshield when necessary while driving, increasing the risk of a crash.

Warning signs

Users may notice that the Ford windshield wipers fail to work properly when turned on.

Background of the recall

This recall follows on the heels of a similar one conducted in April of this year for the same concern for the 2021 F-150 pickups. After recalling the vehicles, the manufacturer became aware of windshield wiper failures on vehicles that were outside of the scope of the original recall.

Other Ford recalls

In April, Ford issued a recall for 47,084 2021 Ford F-150 pickup trucks for a transmission defect that could cause the vehicle to randomly shift to neutral while being driven, increasing the risk of a crash. 

Another of the recent Ford F-150 recalls was issued in August involving 58,203 2021-2022 Ford F-150 pickup trucks. This was over a problem with the driveshaft that could lead the vehicle to stall or roll away. 

The repair

Dealers will replace the defective wiper motor on the affected vehicles with a new one, and the service will be done free of charge. Ford will reimburse owners who availed themselves of the repair before the recall was issued.

Owners of affected vehicles will be notified on or around January 6, 2023.

Dearborn, MI – October 31, 2022 – In 2022, Ford (NYSE:F) has been subject to 57 recalls, affecting 7.5 million vehicles. In addition to the recalls, Ford has faced one lawsuit and three investigations.

Lawsuit

In late July, Ford was sued over 2021 Lincoln Navigator and Expedition SUVs that may catch fire. Owners of the vehicles argued that Ford “either knew or should have known” about the defect relating to more than 66,000 vehicles well before the recall was issued.

Investigations  

The company is subject to three investigations, which could result in additional recalls.

In the beginning of September, the U.S government auto safety regulator – the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) – opened an investigation into brake fluid leaks affecting 2013-2018 Ford Fusion and Lincoln MKZ vehicles. Approximately 1.73 million vehicles could be recalled as a result.

In mid-June, a Ford investigation was launched after a dealer allegedly sold a 2021 Ford Escape compact crossover SUV, which was part of a recall at the time. The sale of a car that is being recalled is illegal.

Prior to that in early June, the regulator launched an investigation into 25,538 2021 Ford Bronco vehicles that may stall. 

Recalls

Ford fire risk recalls

A total of 708,788 Ford vehicles were recalled due to fire risk.  

In April, 345,451 Escape and Bronco Sport SUVs were recalled because of an engine fault that could lead to a fire. This was prompted by at least 21 warranty claims and reports of fire. 

In early September, 198,482 vehicles were recalled over a faulty motor, indicated by the smell of something burning or smoke emerging from the instrument panel vents.

Other fire-related Ford recalls include one in July affecting 100,689 vehicles, an SUV recall affecting 39,013 vehicles, a truck recall affecting 19,697 vehicles, as well as a Maverick pickup truck recall affecting 5,456 vehicles.

Ford rollaway issues

Several recalls also transpired due to the risk of cars rolling away into the oncoming traffic.

The biggest Ford recall this year was in mid-June. The recall affected 2.9 million vehicles and was prompted by several reports of property damage and injuries caused by the issue. 

Prior to that in April, 391,836 vehicles had a trailer brakes issue, increasing the stopping distance and potentially causing harm. 

Ford truck recalls

One of the most recent Ford truck recalls was in August, where 58,203 F-150 trucks had a rollaway and stalling issue. This was attributed to a fracture in the driveshaft, which transfers engine power to the wheels.

In May, Ford F-Series trucks were recalled due to an issue with the transmission, which could lead to the subject vehicles rolling away when parked. This recall affected 23,165 heavy duty trucks.

Ford Bronco recalls

In July, 63,294 Ford Bronco and Ranger vehicles were recalled over windshields that could detach. The cause of the issue was yet to be confirmed. 

Another one of this year’s Ford Bronco recalls was in June, where 53,103 vehicles were recalled over faulty child lock concerns.

Dearborn, MI – October 30, 2022 – Ford (NYSE:F) is recalling 11,098 2022 Ford Maverick pickup trucks whose brake lights may light up unexpectedly, increasing the risk of a crash.

Recall summary

In the subject vehicles, the brake lights may illuminate even if the brakes are not in use due to a software error in the anti-lock brake system (ABS). The ABS is a safety system which prevents skidding and allows the driver to have better control of the vehicle.

The component in question is the ABS Module Software, with part numbers NZ6C-2B373-C and NZ6C-2D053-C. 

Recall risks

Unintended illumination of the brake lights may confuse other drivers, augmenting the risk of an accident.

Other recent Ford recalls

Earlier this month, Ford recalled more than 86,000 vehicles due to flickering parking lights, as reported.

Prior to that in September, the U.S. government launched an investigation that could lead to one of the latest Ford brake recalls. Over 1.7 million Ford Fusion and Lincoln MKZ vehicles are being investigated due to a brake fluid leak.

One of the most recent 2022 Ford Maverick recalls was in July, where more than 100,00 hybrid SUVs were recalled due to the risk of fire.

The repair

To address the Ford ABS issues, owners will be able to take their vehicles to a Ford or Lincoln dealer for an ABS software update at no cost. Owners will be notified about the repair program between November 14, 2022 and November 18, 2022.

Dearborn, MI – October 20, 2022 – Ford (NYSE:F) is recalling 277,040 vehicles whose rearview camera images may become cloudy, making it hard to see obstacles behind the vehicle and increasing the risk of a crash.

The recall includes the following vehicles:

  • 2017 – 2020 Ford F-250 SD
  • 2017 – 2020 Ford F-350 SD
  • 2017 – 2020 Ford F-450 SD
  • 2017 – 2020 Lincoln Continental 

Recall summary

The subject vehicles have a 360-degree camera system, which allows drivers to get a complete view of their surroundings. Due to a “degradation of the camera’s anti-reflective lens coating” the rearview camera image may become foggy.

The components in question are the rearview cameras, with part numbers HC3T-19G490-DH and GD9T-19G490-BH.

Recall risks

A foggy or cloudy rearview camera image can reduce the driver’s ability to see behind the vehicle..

Warning signs

Over time, the clarity of the rearview camera image may worsen as a result of being exposed to UV radiation.

Other recent Ford and Lincoln recalls and investigations

Other Ford truck recalls include one in August, when more than 50,000 Ford F-150 trucks were recalled over a risk of stalling and rolling away. There was another F-150 recall in June over missing tire information, as reported.  

Earlier this month, Ford recalled nearly 200,000 SUVs over fire risk caused by a problem with the air conditioner’s motor.

The U.S. government is investigating Ford over brake fluid leaks, which could lead to longer stopping distances, increasing the risk of a crash. The investigation was prompted by 50 complaints about the issue, as well as a crash that allegedly resulted from it.

Repair

To remedy the issue, Ford and Lincoln dealers will replace the rearview camera at no cost to the owners.

Owners were notified about the repair program between September 12, 2022 and September 16, 2022.

This Ford recall includes the following vehicles:

Recall summary

The subject vehicles’ parking lights flicker in certain circumstances, such as when the headlights are in automatic mode and it becomes dark enough for the “night mode” to be triggered.

The component in question is the LED driver module, with part number NC5A-13B626-FB.

Recall risks

Flickering parking lights can reduce visibility or cause a distraction, increasing the risk of a crash and injury.

To remedy the parking lights issues, dealers will either replace or reprogram the LED driver module at no cost to owners. Owners will be notified about the repair program between October 31, 2022 and November 4, 2022.
