Ford recalls Bronco, Maverick cars it failed to repair for stall issues

Dearborn, MI – April 7, 2025 – Ford (NYSE:F) is recalling 12,833 pickup trucks and SUVs that may stall. This ups the risk of a crash and injury.

 The following SUVs are affected:

  • 2021 – 2024 Ford Bronco Sport
  • 2022 – 2023 Ford Maverick

These vehicles were originally recalled for the same issue in April of last year but did not receive the required remedy.

Recall summary

The charging of the 12-volt battery – which powers the vehicle’s electrical system and starter motor – is controlled by two computers called the Body Control Module (BCM) and the Powertrain Control Module (PCM). In the affected SUVs, a software error may prevent the modules from catching when the battery is running low.

Recall risks

The vehicle may stall and fail to restart, upping the risk of a crash, especially if this happens in dense traffic.

Background of the recall

Ford originally recalled these vehicles for the same issue in April of last year on the back of a U.S government auto safety regulator investigation. The remedy was a software update to the BCM and PCM.

The present recall stems from dealers’ failure to perform the said software update to some of the vehicles that were marked as repaired.

The repair

Dealers will update the BCM and PCM software free of charge.

Interestingly enough, this remedy proved to be insufficient in the past on a large subset of vehicles in the past. Earlier this year, Ford recalled close to 60% of vehicles originally involved in the April 2024 recall because they kept stalling even after receiving the software remedy. Dealers replaced the batteries in that case, as reported.

The owners should receive letters with more information between April 24, 2025, and May 1, 2025.

Ford issues second recall for cars with defective trailer brakes

Dearborn, MI – April 1, 2025 – Ford (NYSE:F), which owns the Lincoln brand, is recalling 10,627 pickup trucks and SUVs whose trailer brakes may fail. This defect could increase the stopping distance, upping the chances of a crash and injury.

 The following models are affected:

  • 2022 Ford Expedition
  • 2022 Ford F-250 SD
  • 2022 Ford F-350 SD
  • 2022 Ford F-450 SD
  • 2022 Ford F-550 SD
  • 2022 Ford Maverick
  • 2022 Lincoln Navigator
  • 2021 – 2022 Ford F-150

These vehicles were originally recalled three years ago but for some reason were not repaired.

Recall summary

Trailer brake operation is controlled by a computer called the Integrated Trailer Relay Module. Due to a software error in the module, the affected vehicles’ trailer brakes may stop working.

Recall risks

With the brakes on the trailer out of action, the vehicle may take longer to stop, upping the risk of a crash and injury.

Background of the recall

These trucks and SUVs were already recalled in April 2022 to have their trailer brake control module software updated. But, as it turns out, some dealers did not actually do the update, despite marking it as done.

Other Ford recalls

In February 2025, Ford Super Duty trucks and Lincoln Corsair SUVs were recalled because their rearview cameras could fail to show an image.

In September 2024, Ford was prompted by a US government investigation to recall several models, including F-150 trucks, over an engine defect that could cause them to stall

The repair

Dealers will update the trailer brake control module software free of charge.

The owners should receive letters with more information between April 14, 2025, and April 18, 2025.

Dearborn, MI – March 28, 2025 – Ford (NYSE:F), which also owns the Lincoln brand, is recalling 240,510 SUVs whose seat belts “may not properly restrain an occupant in a crash.” This augments the risk of injury to everyone involved.

The following models are affected:

  • 2020 – 2021 Ford Explorer
  • 2020 – 2021 Lincoln Aviator

Recall summary

The bolts that hold the seat belt buckles and seat belt retractors in the affected SUV were not sufficiently tightened during assembly and may become loose over time.

Recall risks

Insufficiently secured seat belt buckles and retractors may not provide adequate protection to the occupants in a crash and increase the risk of serious injuries.

Warning signs

The occupants may notice squeaking and rattling noises.

Other Ford recalls

In February 2025, Ford recalled Super Duty trucks and Lincoln Corsairs over malfunctioning rearview cameras.

On a separate note, Ford is currently being investigated by the U.S. government over allegedly malfunctioning seat belt pretensioners.

The repair

Dealers will replace the seat belt buckle and retractor bolts free of charge.

The owners should receive letters with more information between March 31, 2025 and April 4, 2025.

The following models are affected:

  • 2021 Ford Expedition
  • 2021 – 2022 Ford F-250 SD
  • 2021 – 2022 Ford F-350 SD

  • 2021 – 2022 Ford F-600 SD
  • 2020 – 2022 Lincoln Corsair

Recall summary

The rearview camera in the affected vehicles may fail to show an image.

The manufacturer is unsure what is causing this problem but reports no accidents or injuries so far.

Recall risks

The driver may run over nearby pedestrians or objects, upping the risk of an injury or property damage.

Ford issues second recall for Bronco, Maverick SUVs that may stall

Dearborn, MI – February 6, 2025 – Ford (NYSE:F) is recalling 272,817 SUVs that may lose power while driving. This ups the risk of a crash and injury, especially in fast-moving traffic.

The following models are affected:

  • 2021 – 2023 Ford Bronco Sport
  • 2022 – 2023 Ford Maverick

The recall comes on the heels of a U.S. government investigation that is looking into the effectiveness of a previous recall for the same issue conducted last year. Vehicles that were repaired then will need a new remedy.

Recall summary

Due to a manufacturing error, the 12-volt battery in the affected SUVs may develop a crack and lose charge. This can cause the vehicle to stall and prevent it from being restarted afterward. In addition, the SUV’s accessories, such as hazard lights, may become inoperable.

The faulty batteries were made by a Chinese manufacturer Camel Battery.

Recall risks

A stalled vehicle can get hit by oncoming traffic, upping the risk of an injury.

Background of the recall

Ford already recalled these SUVs in April 2024 to address the stalling issue. On that occasion, the vehicle’s software was updated to monitor the battery charge level more closely.

In November 2024, the U.S. auto safety regulator – called the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) – opened an investigation into that recall after receiving 15 driver complaints about the repaired vehicles stalling in traffic. Replacement of the 12V battery has been reported to address the problem.

The present recall is a direct result of the ongoing investigation.

Other Ford recalls

Last month, Ford recalled hybrid SUVs over the risk of stalling and vehicle fire, caused by a defective high-voltage battery.

Ford is currently being investigated by the U.S. government over malfunctioning seat belt pretensioners.

The repair

Dealers will replace the battery free of charge.

The owners should receive letters with more information between February 3, 2025, and February 7, 2025.

Ford recalls hybrid SUVs that may stall, catch fire

Dearborn, MI – January 17, 2025 – Ford (NYSE:F), which owns the Lincoln brand, is recalling 20,484 hybrid SUVs over a defect that may cause them to stall or catch fire. This ups the risk of a crash and injury, especially in fast-moving traffic.

The following models are affected:

  • 2020 – 2024 Ford Escape
  • 2021 – 2024 Lincoln Corsair

Recall summary

The high-voltage battery – which stores electricity for the motor – could develop a short and overheat. This would cause power loss or result in a vehicle fire.

The manufacturer reported four incidents caused by this issue, none of which resulted in accidents or injuries.

Recall risks

Both possible scenarios – loss of motive power and vehicle fire – up the risk of a crash and injury.

Warning signs

In the event of the short circuit, the driver should see a “Stop Safely Now” message displayed on the screen.

Other Ford recalls

Some of these SUVs may have been affected by a Ford recall from June 2024 over stalling risk caused by transmission issues, as reported.

In September 2024, Ford recalled Broncos and other models that could stall because of a “catastrophic engine damage”.

The repair

Dealers will install software to monitor battery’s condition. The battery will be then replaced if any signs of malfunction are detected. Both fixes will be free of charge.

The software is set to become available in 2Q25.

The owners should receive letters with more information between January 20, 2025, and January 24, 2025.

Dearborn, MI – January 14, 2025 – Ford (NYSE:F), which owns the Lincoln brand, is recalling 47,818 2024-2025 Lincoln Nautilus SUVs whose power windows may hurt occupants’ limbs while closing. This ups the risk of an injury.

Recall summary

Power windows must automatically stop and retract if they encounter any obstacle while closing. In the affected vehicles, they may not stop when needed because of a software error.

Recall risks

Power windows that do not retract when they roll up may pinch an occupant’s arm or finger and cause an injury.

US government investigates Ford over faulty seat belt pretensioners

Washington, D.C. November 28, 2024 – The U.S. government’s auto safety regulator is investigating Ford (NYSE:F) over allegations of seat belts locking in place following a recall issued for the same issue. The alleged defect may compromise occupant protection in a crash, increasing the risk of injury.

If the investigation leads to a recall, it could affect 112,657 2019-2020 Ford Expedition SUVs.

Investigation summary

The regulator, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), opened an investigation on November 15, 2024, following three complaints of seat belt retractor pretensioners deploying with no apparent reason.

What is a seat belt pretensioner?

The pretensioner is a device that deploys during a crash to tighten the seat belt against the occupant’s torso to prevent him from getting ejected from the vehicle. If it is deployed in the absence of a crash, the car occupants may not be able to use the seat belt because it may get locked in place. Conversely, if the seat belt is still usable but the pretensioner has deployed, the belt will not tighten during an accident.

Risks

Both scenarios up the risk of a serious injury in an accident.

Background of the investigation

In February 2024, Ford recalled over 77,000 Expedition and Lincoln Navigator SUVs over the same issue.

The 110,000 vehicles that are part of this investigation were not part of the initial recall but potentially have the same defect.

The investigation aims to assess whether these additional vehicles also need to be recalled.

Other Ford recalls

Earlier this month, Ford recalled over 6,000 Mustangs whose instrument clusters would fail to illuminate.

In September, more than 90,000 Lincoln and Ford vehicles were recalled due to “catastrophic engine damage” that could result in a stall, as reported.

Is your vehicle part of a recall?

This investigation may result in a Ford seat belt pretensioner recall, potentially affecting more than 110,000 SUVs. To do a Ford recall check and see if your car might be a part of it, please use MotorSafety’s free vehicle lookup tool.

Ford recalls stalling cars following US government investigation

Dearborn, MI September 14, 2024 – Ford (NYSE:F), which owns the Lincoln brand, is recalling 90,736 SUVs and trucks that may stall, upping the risk of a crash and injury.

The following models – fitted with a 2.7L or 3.0L Nano EcoBoost engine – are affected:

  • 2021 – 2022 Ford Bronco
  • 2021 – 2022 Ford Edge
  • 2021 – 2022 Ford Explorer
  • 2021 – 2022 Ford F-150
  • 2021 – 2022 Lincoln Navigator
  • 2021 – 2022 Lincoln Nautilus

This recall comes on the heels of a U.S. government investigation and over 1,300 customer complaints.

Recall summary

The engine has intake and exhaust valves, which continuously open and close during engine operation. In the affected vehicles, due to a supplier error, the intake valves may break, causing “catastrophic engine damage.”

Recall risks

A stalled vehicle is more likely to get hit, augmenting the risk of injury for everyone involved.

Warning signs

Before the engine shuts down completely, it may start “running rough”, likely triggering the check engine light on the dashboard.

Background of the recall

The recall comes on the back of an ongoing investigation conducted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the U.S. government auto safety regulator, as reported.

Leading up to the recall, the manufacturer and NHTSA received 1,301 warranty complaints, as well field and customer reports. No injuries or crashes have been reported.

Other Ford recalls

Transmission glitches resulting in a loss of motive power led to a recall in June 2024, affecting close to 9,000 Ford and Lincoln SUVs, as reported.

Over 8,000 Mustangs were recalled in the same month because of a leak that could cause fire, also as reported.

The repair

Dealers will replace the engine free of charge, if needed. Owners who paid for their own repairs before the recall was issued, are set to be reimbursed as it is customary with recalls.

The owners should receive notifications between October 7, 2024, and October 11, 2024.

Ford recalls new Mustangs over shifting issues, fire risk

Dearborn, MI June 14, 2024 – Ford (NYSE:F) is recalling 8,161 2024 Ford Mustang sports cars that may catch fire or have difficulty switching gears. Both conditions up the risk of a crash and injury and in fact, the recall comes on the back of two fires.

Recall summary

The clutch line in these vehicles with manual transmission is responsible for “transmitting hydraulic pressure” and brake fluid between the engine and transmission, allowing the driver to switch gears.

Due to a supplier error,  the clutch line is not properly attached to the rest of the car. That may result in it contacting “hot exhaust components” and melting, “leaking brake fluid.”

This may cause an inability to change gears and, if the fluid touches any hot components, an engine fire.

Recall risks

With the driver unable to shift gears, the vehicle may stall.

Separately, a fire increases the risk of injury for the occupants of the car.

Warning signs

If the escaping brake fluid leaks onto hot engine components, it may generate smoke and a strong burning odor.

Background of the recall

The recall comes on the back of two fires and a report of underhood smoke. No injuries or crashes have been reported.

Other Ford recalls

Issues concerning brake fluid were the cause of another Mustang recall, which took place in December 2023 and affected nearly 200,000 cars

Earlier this month, close to 9,000 Ford and Lincoln SUVs were recalled over loss of power, as reported.

The repair

Dealers will repair clutch pressure lines free of charge.

The owners should receive notifications on June 17, 2024.
