Toyota recalls EVs over reduced visibility

Plano, TX – September 24, 2025 – Toyota (NYSE:TM), which also owns the Lexus and Subaru brands, is recalling 94,320 electric vehicles whose windshields may frost and fog up. This defect reduces drivers’ visibility, increasing the chances of a crash.

The following models are affected:  

  • 2023 – 2025 Toyota bZ4X
  • 2023 – 2025 Lexus RZ
  • 2023 – 2025 Subaru Solterra

Recall summary

The windshield defroster heats the windshield to prevent it from getting frosted or getting fogged up. The defroster’s operation is controlled by an heating, ventilation and air conditioning system (HVAC) module, which may malfunction due to a software error.  

Recall risks

Difficulty seeing the road ahead ups the risk of an accident.

Other Toyota recalls

In June 2025, more than 443,000 Toyota Tundra pickup trucks were recalled over inoperable backup lights.

In February 2025, Toyota recalled approximately 41,000 cars with faulty seat belts, as reported.

The repair

The dealers will update the corresponding software free of charge.   

Notifications to owners should be mailed between October 20, 2025 and November 3, 2025.
