Ford recalls new Explorer SUVs over risk of stall, rollaway

Dearborn, MI – May 2, 2025 – Ford (NYSE:F) is recalling 24,655 2025 Ford Explorer SUVs that may lose power or roll away. These defects increase the risk of a crash and injury.

Recall summary

The Powertrain Control Module (PCM) is a computer that controls the engine’s and transmission’s operation. In the affected SUVs, the PCM may reset while driving due to a software error, causing a loss of motive power. This may also cause damage to the park gear mechanism.

A damaged park gear mechanism may not hold the car on the incline, causing it to roll away if the electronic parking brake is not engaged.

Recall risks

A stalled SUV can be hit by other vehicles while a rollaway may result in injuries and property damage.

The recall comes on the heels of 366 warranty claims but luckily, no crashes or injuries have been reported.

Warning signs

A PCM reset will trigger a Malfunction Indicator Light (MIL) on the dashboard. In addition, the transmission may be difficult to shift in or out of Park, indicating damage to its internal components.

Safety tips

Make sure the electronic parking brake is engaged before leaving the vehicle to prevent a rollaway.

Other Ford recalls

In April 2025, Ford recalled Bronco Sport SUVs and Maverick pickup trucks over a stalling issue that was not repaired in a previous recall.

In March 2025, Ford Explorer and Lincoln Aviator SUVs were recalled because their seat belts did not  provide sufficient protection in a crash, as reported.

The repair

The dealers will update the PCM software and repair any damage to the transmission. Both  repairs will be done free of charge.

The owners should receive letters with more information between May 26, 2025, and May 30, 2025.

Ford recalls almost 2 million Explorer SUVs over fly-away trim

Dearborn, MI – February 15, 2024 – Ford (NYSE:F) is recalling close to 1.9 million 2011-2019 Ford Explorer SUVs because a piece of exterior trim may detach while driving and create road debris. This increases the risk of a crash and injury.

This recall follows a U.S. government investigation caused by several incidents involving trim pieces flying away from these vehicles.

Recall summary

The listed SUVs have a plastic trim surrounding the windshield, which is held in place with clip attachments. In the affected vehicles, the trim was not seated properly and may become loose and detach while driving.

Recall risks

The trim may become a “road hazard” and increase the risk of a crash.

Background of the recall

The recall comes on the back of a U.S. government investigation started in January 2023 after the auto safety regulator, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), received over 150 complaints about the fly-away trims. There have been several instances of drivers behind the Explorers “momentarily” losing control of their cars while trying to evade the object.

Warning signs

The driver may notice the trim is not seated correctly or hear it rattle while driving.

Other Ford recalls

Last month, Ford recalled close to 190,000 Maverick pickup trucks whose turn signals may fail to operate

On a separate note, there is an ongoing issue with Explorer SUVs that may stall or roll away, with the latest recall caused by this issue taking place in October 2023.

The repair

The dealers will replace A-pillar trims repairs are free of charge.

Owners should receive letters with more information between March 13, 2024, and March 25, 2024.

Ford issues third round of Explorer, Lincoln recalls over faulty rearview cameras

Dearborn, MI – June 3, 2023 – Ford (NYSE:F), which owns the Lincoln brand, is recalling 422,201 SUVs with rearview cameras that may fail, resulting in an increased risk of an accident.

This recall comes on the back of a “minor crash” and is the third one of its kind since 2021.

The following models are affected:

  • 2020 – 2023 Ford Explorer
  • 2020 – 2023 Lincoln Navigator
  • 2020 – 2022 Lincoln Corsair

Recall summary

Owners of the affected vehicles may experience loss of video feed when either going in Reverse or when the 360-degree camera view is selected and the vehicle is being driven at a low speed.

Recall risks

For more on risks of this recall, please see this recent article about a similar issue by Honda.

Background of the recall

Ford originally recalled some of the affected vehicles in 2021. That recall had to be expanded in February of this year as the original remedy proved to be insufficient, as reported.

Following the second recall, the manufacturer received 250 warranty claims alleging loss of the video feed in cars that previously received repairs. The defect resulted in at least one minor accident.

Other Ford recalls

In July 2022, a lawsuit was filed against Ford involving the 2021 Ford Expedition and 2021 Lincoln Navigator, alleging that the two models presented an increased risk of fire while being driven or when parked and switched off.

The Lincoln Navigator and Corsair were also the subjects of a Ford recall announced in January 2023 because of an issue with the seatbelt chime, as reported.

The repair

The remedy for the issue is being developed and will be available free of charge once ready. Ford will also reimburse owners who paid for their own repairs before the recall was issued.

Owners of the affected vehicles will receive letters with more information by June 30, 2023.
