GM issues second recall for cars with loss of stability

Warren, MI – March 11, 2026 – General Motors (NYSE:GM), which owns Cadillac, Chevrolet and GMC brands, is recalling a total of 44,878 trucks and SUVs in two separate recalls, because their rear wheels may lock up while driving. This defect destabilizes the vehicles, upping the chances of a crash and injury.

The following models are affected:

  • 2020 GMC Sierra 2500
  • 2020 GMC Sierra 3500
  • 2022 GMC Yukon
  • 2022 GMC Yukon XL
  • 2022 Chevrolet Tahoe
  • 2022 Cadillac Escalade
  • 2022 Cadillac Escalade ESV
  • 2022 Chevrolet Suburban
  • 2020 Chevrolet Silverado 2500
  • 2020 Chevrolet Silverado 3500
  • 2020 – 2022 GMC Sierra 1500
  • 2020 – 2022 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

The pickups were already recalled over the same issue in October 2024, but were not repaired successfully.

Recall summary

An automatic transmission shifts gears using a series of hydraulic valves. In the affected vehicles, one of the valves may fail due to excessive wear,  which may jam the transmission during downshifts and lock up the rear wheels.

Recall risks

A vehicle with locked rear wheels is unstable and more likely to spin and crash. In fact the recall comes on the heels of an accident where the driver hit a guard rail. It is not clear if anyone was injured.

Warning signs

The gears may become “sticky” before the transmission locks up.

Background of the recall

The listed pickups were already recalled over the same issue in October 2024. The repair, however, was not performed correctly on that occasion.

Other GM recalls

In May 2025, GM recalled nearly 600,000 trucks and SUVs that could have stalled because of a catastrophic engine failure.

The effects of this major recall are currently being investigated by the U.S. government auto safety regulator, following complaints of subsequent engine issues.

The repair

The dealers will update the transmission software, which will spot when the lockup may occur and limit gear shifts. This repair will be free of charge.

Notifications to the owners will be mailed by March 30, 2026.
