GM recalls new Cadillacs over faulty instrument panels

Warren, MI July 8, 2024 – General Motors (NYSE:GM), which owns the Cadillac brand, is recalling 6,746 SUVs whose driver information displays may fail to show when critical indicators – such as turn signals – are turned on. The defect may confuse other road users and increase the risk of a crash.

The recall comes on the back of hundreds of driver complaints and affects the following vehicles:

  • 2023 – 2025 Cadillac XT5
  • 2024 – 2025 Cadillac XT6

Recall summary

Due to a software error, the indicator lights for turn signals, hazards and high beams may “fail to illuminate” when engaged in the listed vehicles.

Recall risks

With no dashboard indicators to warn them, drivers could accidentally leave the turn signals or hazard lights on, which may confuse other road users. At the same time, incessant high beams may blind oncoming traffic, resulting in a collision.

Background of the recall

The recall comes on the back of nearly 200 driver complaints. No injuries or accidents have been reported.

Other Cadillac and GM recalls

A similar issue was the cause of another General Motors recall took place in January 2023 and affected several Cadillac models, as well several GMC and Chevrolet models, as reported.

In February 2024, General Motors recalled over 323,000 Chevy Silverado pickups whose tailgates would open while driving, also as reported.

The repair

Dealers will update the instrument cluster software free of charge.

The owners should receive notifications on August 5, 2024.

US government investigates Nissan over faulty airbags

Washington, D.C. – July 5, 2024 – The U.S. government’s auto safety regulator is investigating Nissan (OTCMKTS:NSANY) over airbags that may trigger in the absence of an accident. This alleged defect increases the risk of an injury for the occupants of the car.

If the investigation leads to a recall, it could affect 74,702 2015 Nissan Rogue SUVs.

Investigation summary

The regulator, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration(NHTSA), opened an investigation on May 31, following “multiple” reports about side curtain airbags deploying when the car doors are slammed or shut.

Risks

Airbags that deploy inadvertently may injure the occupants. In addition, once triggered, the airbags are not functional anymore, meaning they will not there to provide protection if the car is involved into an accident later.

Other Nissan recalls

In March 2024, Nissan issued a Nissan Rogue recall due to the cars’ seat belts failing to restraint the occupants in the event of a collision, as reported.

In May 2024, Nissan recalled brand new Sentra sedans over a loss of motive power, also as reported.

Is your vehicle part of a recall?

The issue could lead to a Nissan airbag recall, possibly affecting approximately 75,000 SUVs. To do a Nissan recall check and see if your car is affected, please use MotorSafety’s free vehicle lookup tool.

US government investigates I.D4 cars whose doors may open while driving

Washington, D.C. – July 3, 2024 – The U.S. government’s auto safety regulator is investigating Volkswagen (OTCMKTS:VWAGY) whose car doors may open while driving. This ups the risk of a side collision and could lead to a recall of 51,500 2021-2023 Volkswagen ID.4 electric cars.

The affected vehicles were already recalled two separate times but it appears that the remedy was not sufficient.

Investigation summary

The regulator, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), opened an investigation on May 16, following 13 complaints of doors opening inadvertently while the vehicle was in motion. Some occupants could not open or close the doors due to inoperable door handles.

This investigation aims to find out if the repairs carried out during the recalls were sufficient.

Risks

The defect augments the risk of a side collision.

“Windows covered with water”

One driver complained that the issue escalated from a simple “annoyance” to a “scary safety hazard.” While stopped at the green light, he could not start the car after a door opened on its own and got stuck, preventing him from closing it to get the car going.

Another said that that when she rolled the windows “down then up,” they would be “covered with water.”

Background of the investigation

The door handles on these vehicles were the cause of two previous recalls, one of which took place in May of last year.

Other Volkswagen recalls

The cars involved in the investigation were recalled in June due to malfunctioning displays, as reported.

In December, Volkswagen recalled I.D4 cars due to sunshades that were deemed flammable, also as reported.

Stellantis recalls Dodge Durango SUVs and RAMs over reduced control

Auburn Hills, MI June 28, 2024 – Stellantis (NYSE:STLA), which owns the Dodge brand, is recalling 211,581 SUVs and pickup trucks whose drivers’ ability to control the car may be limited. The defect augments the risk of loss of control and a crash.

The following vehicles are affected:

  • 2022 Dodge Durango
  • 2022 RAM 2500
  • 2022 RAM 3500

Recall summary

The Electronic Stability Control system (ESC) is an extension of the anti-lock brakes (ABS) system whose job is to apply brakes to one or more wheels to keep the vehicle on track in slippery conditions or during sudden maneuvers.

Due to a software error, the ABS module may disable the ESC.

Recall risks

With the ESC out of order, the vehicle will be more difficult to control and stop during critical situations, which ups the chances of a crash and injury.

Warning signs

The defect could trigger a corresponding warning light on the dashboard.

Safety tips

While driving with a malfunctioning ESC is possible, you should adjust your speed and steering inputs accordingly.

Kia recalls Telluride SUVs over fire risk, tells owners to park outside

Irvine, CA June 20, 2024 – Kia (OTCMKTS:KIMTF) is recalling 462,869 2020-2024 Kia Telluride SUVs over an electrical issue that may result in a fire “while parked or driving.”

This defect increases the risk of crash, injury or property damage.

This recall is the latest contribution to the long list of Kia and Hyundai fire-related recalls and comes on the back of the “driver seat [catching] on fire while driving.”

Recall summary

The seats in these SUVs are adjusted by electric motors that only come on when the driver engages the seat slide knob. Due to a supplier error, the knob may jam in the ON position, leaving the motors to run continuously.

Recall risks

A continuously operating electric motor may overheat and burst into flames. The resulting vehicle fire ups the chances of a crash, injury or property damage.

Warning signs

Besides the inability to adjust the seat, the occupant may notice a burning smell or smoke emerging from underneath it.

Safety tips

Before the repair is done, the manufacturer recommends that drivers park outside and away from structures.

Background of the recall

The recall comes on the back of at least six instances of “localized melting of seat tilt motor” and one instance of the driver seat catching fire. No injuries or crashes have been reported.

This recall is the latest edition of the never-ending Kia fire saga which saw it and its sister company Hyundai recall millions of vehicles over the recent years. Both companies are also subject to an ongoing U.S. government investigation, as reported.

Other Kia recalls

Some of these Kia Telluride SUVs may have been affected by an April recall concerning faulty high beams

The same vehicles were recalled later that month over the risk of rollaway when parked, as reported.

Washington D.C. June 18, 2024 – Mazda (OTCMKTS:MZDAY) is recalling 9,914 2024 Mazda CX-90 SUVs that may brake on their own. This ups the risk of an accident.

Recall summary

These SUVs are equipped with an automated braking system which applies the brakes if there is an obstacle in front of the vehicle.

Due to a software error, the system may malfunction.

Recall risks

Ford recalls new Mustangs over shifting issues, fire risk

Dearborn, MI June 14, 2024 – Ford (NYSE:F) is recalling 8,161 2024 Ford Mustang sports cars that may catch fire or have difficulty switching gears. Both conditions up the risk of a crash and injury and in fact, the recall comes on the back of two fires.

Recall summary

The clutch line in these vehicles with manual transmission is responsible for “transmitting hydraulic pressure” and brake fluid between the engine and transmission, allowing the driver to switch gears.

Due to a supplier error,  the clutch line is not properly attached to the rest of the car. That may result in it contacting “hot exhaust components” and melting, “leaking brake fluid.”

This may cause an inability to change gears and, if the fluid touches any hot components, an engine fire.

Recall risks

With the driver unable to shift gears, the vehicle may stall.

Separately, a fire increases the risk of injury for the occupants of the car.

Warning signs

If the escaping brake fluid leaks onto hot engine components, it may generate smoke and a strong burning odor.

Background of the recall

The recall comes on the back of two fires and a report of underhood smoke. No injuries or crashes have been reported.

Other Ford recalls

Issues concerning brake fluid were the cause of another Mustang recall, which took place in December 2023 and affected nearly 200,000 cars

Earlier this month, close to 9,000 Ford and Lincoln SUVs were recalled over loss of power, as reported.

The repair

Dealers will repair clutch pressure lines free of charge.

Auburn Hills, MI June 12, 2024 – Volkswagen (OTCMKTS:VWAGY) is recalling 79,953 2021-2023 Volkswagen ID.4 electric cars whose instrument clusters and central displays may not boot. The defect augment the risk of a crash and injury.

Recall summary

Due to a software error, the car’s instrument cluster and central display may not turn on or “reset” while driving. This would leave the driver without critical information, such as vehicle speed and the image from the rearview camera.

Recall risks

Insufficient information about vehicle speed and the unavailability of the backup camera up the risk of a crash and injury.

Other Volkswagen recalls

Some of these Volkswagen ID.4 cars may have been affected by a May 2023 recall caused by doors opening on their own while driving.

More recently, in December 2023, the same cars were recalled over flammable sunshades.

Ford recalls Maverick, Corsair cars over loss of power

Dearborn, MI June 7, 2024 – Ford (NYSE:F), which owns the Lincoln brand, is recalling 8,727 hybrid SUVs and pickup trucks that may stall. This ups the crash risk and injury, especially in fast-moving traffic.

The recall comes on the back of hundreds of warranty claims and encompasses the following vehicles:

  • 2022 – 2024 Ford Maverick
  • 2021 – 2022 Lincoln Corsair
  • 2020 – 2022 Ford Escape

Recall summary

The listed vehicles’ transmission is controlled by a small computer called the Hybrid Powertrain Control Module (HPCM).

A glitch in the module’s software may result in the transmission shifting into neutral. Even after shifting into gear once again, the car will go into the “limp home” mode, with its power output being significantly limited.

Recall risks

If the car loses power, it may get hit from behind, upping the risk of an injury for everyone involved.

Warning signs

The driver may notice a flashing “Drive” sign on the gear indicator. The instrument panel may also display a wrench-shaped warning accompanied by a chime.

Background of the recall

The recall comes on the heels of 315 warranty claims and 125 vehicle owner questionnaires. No injuries or crashes have been reported.

Other Ford recalls

These Ford Maverick pickups may have also been affected by a recall from January 2024, caused by inoperable turn signals

On a separate note, an instrument panel that may fail to illuminate was the reason why Ford recalled several models in August 2023, including Escape SUVs

The repair

Dealers will update the HPCM software free of charge.

The owners should receive their notifications between May 23, 2024, and May 24, 2024.
