Nissan recalls vehicles over power steering failure

Franklin, TN – September 24, 2022 – Nissan (OTCMKTS:NSANY) has issued a recall for 20,040 vehicles over a loss of power steering assist. The issue ups the risk of a crash.

The recall covers the following SUVs and subcompact cars:

  • 2021 Nissan Kicks
  • 2021 Nissan Versa

Recall summary

The power steering feature makes it easier for drivers to turn or maneuver a vehicle. A sensor measures the force the driver applies to the steering wheel during turns, then tells the control unit how much assistance to provide.

In the affected vehicles, an unreliable electrical connection in the sensor could lead to the power steering being disabled

The component involved in this recall is the upper steering column, with part number 48810-5EE0A.

Recall risks

When power steering fails, the driver must use more effort to steer. For more information, read about a similar recall initiated by General Motors.

Other Nissan recalls

The current recall is one of two 2021 Nissan Versa recalls so far. The model was among 30,799 vehicles recalled in September 2021 over a problem with the front turn signal bulbs. The recall also included the 2021 Kicks SUVs, as reported.

In August 2022, Nissan recalled 10,477 vehicles, including the 2021 Pathfinder and 2021 and 2022 Rogue, over the rearview camera’s failure to display images when reverse gear is selected, also as reported.

Repair

Dealers will inspect the steering sensor assembly and replace it as needed. All repair work will be done free of charge.

Affected owners will be notified on or around November 9, 2022.

Franklin, TN – August 7, 2022 – Nissan (OTCMKTS:NSANY) is recalling 10,477 rental SUVs and pickup trucks over an issue with the rearview camera. The dashboard monitor may not display images from the rearview camera when the vehicle is reversing, increasing the risk of a crash.

The recall covers the following models:

  • 2022 Nissan Frontier
  • 2021 Nissan Pathfinder
  • 2022 Nissan Titan
  • 2021 – 2022 Nissan Rogue

Recall summary

These vehicles give customers the option of a radio service subscription as part of the rental.  Even if the customer declines the service, the In-Vehicle Infotainment (IVI) system will continue to search for radio channels, causing the system to reboot after a certain time. While the system is rebooting, the rearview camera will be unavailable.

The component involved in this recall is the IVI software program version, with multiple part numbers including 4612, 4618, 5319, 4901 and 4617.

Recall risks

Nissan recalls trucks that may roll away

Franklin TN – July 5, 2022 – Nissan (OTCMKTS:NSANY) is recalling 180,176 trucks whose transmissions may slip out of Park and roll away, increasing the risk of crashing into pedestrians or other vehicles. This recall includes the following vehicles:

  • 2020 – 2022 Nissan Frontier
  • 2020 – 2022 Nissan Titan

Recall summary

When the driver selects the Park gear, a mechanism inside the transmission locks up and stops the vehicle from moving. In affected trucks, the Park gear mechanism might not engage as intended due to a supplier error during manufacturing.

This may cause the vehicle to roll away.

The component causing this recall is the automatic transmission, with part number 31311 X280A.

Recall risks

As in similar recalls, vehicle rollaway increases the risk of injury from a resulting crash.

Safety tips

If your truck is affected by this recall, Nissan advises that you use the parking brake every time you park.

Nissan recalls SUVs with fly-open hoods

Franklin, TN – July 2, 2022 – Nissan (OTCMKTS:NSANY) is recalling 322,671 2013–2016 Nissan Pathfinder SUVs whose hoods may fly open while driving. This obstructs the driver’s field of view, increasing the risk of a crash and injury.

This recall follows on the heels of a U.S. government investigation.

Recall summary

The hood on a vehicle is held shut by two mechanisms: the primary latch, which is released when the driver pulls the lever inside the cabin, and the secondary (safety) latch, which is manually released under the front edge of the hood.

On vehicles affected by this Nissan Pathfinder recall, dust and dirt from the road may create buildup inside the secondary locking mechanism. If that happens, the mechanism may jam in an open position. While the hood will remain securely closed, nothing will stop it from flying open if the driver accidentally pulls the primary latch release lever while driving

Background of the recall

These hood latch issues were investigated by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) in December 2021, as reported.

The 2014-2016 Pathfinder Hybrids are also subject to the same investigation, which is still ongoing.

Recall risks

In addition to significantly limiting visibility, a suddenly opening hood may startle the driver. This could lead to a crash, increasing the risk of an injury.

Other Nissan recalls

A Nissan recall from October 2021 addressed software-related stalling and included Murano, Pathfinder and Infiniti QX60 vehicles.

In January 2022, Nissan recalled a large number of Rogue SUVs over a risk of fire caused by wiring issues, as reported.

The repair

At this time, the manufacturer is still working on a solution. As a first step, 40,000 owners will be asked to bring their SUVs to a dealer that will inspect the latch assembly and replace it if necessary. Nissan will collect the faulty components for examination. Owners of these vehicles will receive notifications on or after June 30, 2022.

The remaining owners will receive instructions on how to inspect the secondary latch. If a problem is found, owners can visit a dealer for inspection and replacement. Notifications about this temporary solution will be sent by August 3, 2022.

Lastly, all owners of affected vehicles will be notified once the final remedy is ready.

Nissan recalls over 500,000 Rogue SUVs over fire risk

Franklin, TN – January 30, 2022 –  Nissan (OTCMKTS:NSANY) is recalling 688,946 SUVs that may catch fire because of an electrical issue, increasing the risk of a crash and injury. The recall affects 2014 – 2016 Nissan Rogue SUVs.

Recall summary

All recalled vehicles listed here have a wiring harness – which is a bundle of wires with electrical connectors – under their floor carpets on the driver side.

One of the connectors may not be sealed properly, allowing water and moisture to get in contact with bare wiring. This causes the connectors to corrode. The corrosion, in turn, increases the chance of an electrical short and fire and may negatively affect the operation of the driver-side window and seat. The issue may also result in “battery drainage.”

The component in question is the “Secondary Dash Side Harness” with multiple part numbers including 24014-4BA0A and 24014-5HK1E.

Recall risks

Malfunctioning seats and windows or the smoke within the vehicle may distract the driver.

A fire greatly increases the risk of injury or even death for the occupants of the car, as well as potentially other motorists. For tips on what to do if there is a fire, please visit the following page.

Warning signs

In addition to malfunctioning driver-side window and door, the driver may also notice the AWD sign come on. If there is an electrical short or a fire, the driver or passengers may notice smoke and a burning smell inside the vehicle.

Other Nissan Rogue recalls

Apart from these Nissan Rogue electrical issues, there were no other recent recalls that were affecting vehicles from this list.  However, the 2021 Nissan Rogue was recalled five times last year. The two recent recalls were caused by unsecured child seats in September and an overheating fuel pump which may cause the car to stall in December, as reported.

The repair

At this time, Nissan has not yet come up with a solution to the problem, although it is expected to be “available in spring 2022”.  All repairs will be done free of charge and owners who paid for theirs out-of-pocket will be reimbursed.

Nissan recalls Murano SUVs for loss of steering, falling off wheels

Dearborn, MI – April 1, 2021 – Nissan (OTCMKTS:NSANY) is recalling 15,223 vehicles whose defective suspension may cause the driver to lose control of the car. It may also result in the front wheels of the vehicle falling off.

The recall includes  Nissan Murano 2020 crossover SUVs.

The affected parts are the right hand transverse and the left hand transverse links, with part numbers 54500-5AA0C and 54501-5AA0C, respectively.

Recall summary

Transverse links  – also known as control arms – are part of the car’s suspension that keeps the wheels of the car in line with its body.  They are connected to the rest of suspension by ball joints. Because of a manufacturing error, these Murano 2020’s links are defective.

As a result, they can get disconnected from the ball joint. This may result in the driver losing ability to steer and getting into an accident. In some cases, it may even result in the front wheels falling off.

Safety risks

Losing control of the car while driving and having the front wheels fall off may result in an accident that may turn fatal not only for the occupants of the car but also pedestrians and other motorists.

Warning signs

Nissan indicates that there are no warning signs. However, at least in some cases, the driver may be able to determine that there is a problem with the links if you notice the following signs:

  • Tires wear unevenly.
  • “When driving over bumps,” the steering vibrates or you can hear a “banging noise.”

Other Nissan recalls

In 2017, Mazda had recalled RX-8 sports cars also because of pertaining to defective ball joints. Read more on the same here.

More recently, Nissan recalled 127,000  2018-2021 Nissan Titan and 2019-2021 Nissan Altima in search of seven defective tires linked to the Continental tire recall.

The 2020 Murano has previously not been the subject of any recalls.

The repair

To fix the issue, dealers will inspect and potentially replace the links. They will also carry out a vehicle alignment procedure if the links are found to be defective. The Nissan recall begins on April 21.

Nissan recalls nearly 127,000 cars in search of seven faulty tires

Franklin, TN – March 24, 2021 – Nissan (OTCMKTS:NSANY) is recalling 126,809 cars and trucks to find seven faulty tires that could rupture or break apart. The recall includes the following pickup trucks and light vehicles:

  • 2019 Nissan Altima
  • 2020 Nissan Altima
  • 2021 Nissan Altima
  • 2018 Nissan Titan
  • 2019 Nissan Titan
  • 2020 Nissan Titan
  • 2021 Nissan Titan

The affected component is Continental tire with multiple part numbers, including 40312 EZ41D and 40312 EZ40C.

Recall summary

The seven tires, which are part of an ongoing series of recalls of Continental brand tires, were “cured” for too long during manufacturing.

The curing process is what makes the tires hold their shape when on the road. However, when the process runs for longer than necessary, it makes them more susceptible to breaks or ruptures. As a result, the tires can go flat. Additionally, the tread —the part which touches the road— could separate from the rest of the tire, resulting in the so-called belt separation.

Warning signs

One of the warning signs, as reported in our recent article about a similar Mercedes-Benz recall, is a bulge in the tread area.

If you notice a bulge, do NOT drive on it. Call a tow truck or use your spare tire to drive to your mechanic to have the tire replaced.

Risks

Flat tires and belt separation can cause drivers to lose control and crash, particularly if they happen at high speeds.

What to do if your tires blow out

If your tires blow out while driving, The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) recommends the following

  • Stay calm and do your best to keep the vehicle balanced.
  • Do not slam on the brakes or suddenly take your foot off the accelerator. Both of these could cause you to lose control of the car.
  • Slowly ease off of the gas.
  • Gently “correct the steering” to regain control of the car.
  • Once the car is stable, continue to slow down until find a safe place to pull over and call for help.

The repair

Dealers will inspect recalled vehicles’ tires to see if identifying numbers on the side match one of the seven defective tires. If they find one, they will replace it with a new tire. Inspections and replacements will be free and the spare tires should be “readily available.

Nissan will notify owners about the recall on April 28.

Recent Nissan Altima and Continental tire recalls

2013-2018 Nissan Altimas were recalled in May of last year for an ongoing hood latch problem that has been the subject of three other recalls. According to Nissan, the issue has led to 16 “minor” crashes or injuries.

As for Continental tires, this is the fourth recall over the last couple of months.  Earlier this month, General Motors recalled 33,000 vehicles due to this  “overcuring” issue.

Nissan Rogue vehicles recalled for stall and fire risk

Franklin, TN – February 24, 2021 – Nissan Motor Company, Ltd. (NASDAQ:NSANY) has remedied issues with 1,787 vehicles, including the 2021 Nissan Rogue SV, that had been dealing with a fuel hose disconnecting from the fuel tank. Additionally, none of these Nissan vehicles have been categorized as unreachable or removed from the recall. All these 2021 Rogue SV models were remedied by Nissan during the first and third quarters of 2021.

Franklin, TN – February 24, 2021 – Nissan Motor Company, Ltd. (NASDAQ:NSANY) has recalled 2,146 Nissan Rogue vehicles, due to a risk of a fuel leak, which may cause the engine to stall or result in a fire. The recall includes 2021 Nissan Rogue SUVs.

Recall summary

The issue arose when Nissan took the fuel pumps of these 2021 Rogue SUVs apart to “confirm [their] performance.” When the manufacturer put them back together, certain parts may not have been properly secured. As such, the fuel pumps may become loose or disconnect completely, causing a fuel leak and potentially, an engine fire. Additionally, the car may stall and not restart.

Warning signs

If the fuel hose or some of its parts are not locked into their position, the driver may smell a fuel odor and see the Malfunction Indication Light (MIL) illuminate.

Risks

If this Nissan Rogue 2021 stalls in traffic, it may hit another vehicle, stationary objects or pedestrians. It may also block traffic and get hit by other vehicles.

A vehicle fire can injure or kill the SUV’s occupants and people around them. If you suspect a fire, turn off the SUV, move all occupants away from the vehicle and call 911 immediately.

The repair

To fix the issue, dealers will need to inspect and reposition the fuel hose and the lock ring. There will be no charge for the repair. Recall is to begin on March 1.

Nissan recalls Pathfinders whose brake lights won’t turn off

Franklin, TN – February 2, 2021 – Nissan (OTCMKTS:NSANY) has recalled 267,276 Pathfinder SUVs with a faulty brake relay –  also known as the brake light switch – that causes the brake lights to stay lit, even when the brake is not pressed. The defect can also have other effects on how the car starts, shifts gears and drives. The affected part number is 25230 79917.

The recall includes:

  • 2013 Nissan Pathfinders
  • 2014 Nissan Pathfinders
  • 2015 Nissan Pathfinders

Recall summary

The brake light switch is a sensor that tells other parts of the car  – the brake lights, the gear shift and sometimes the ignition – that a driver is pressing the brake.

This Nissan Pathfinder recall expands and supersedes a prior recall initiated in May 2016. The original recall was conducted because of a defect which caused the switch to turn on and off in rapid succession due to the movement and vibration of the car, eventually damaging the switch until it was stuck in the “on” position. This made the Pathfinders “think” the brake was being pressed when it was not, causing a whole host of driving issues.

The new recall includes certain 2013-2015 Pathfinders manufactured at Nissan’s Smyrna plant in Tennessee from 2012 to 2017. The first recall only covered 2013 and 2014 Pathfinders manufactured from 2012 to 2013.

Nissan has not disclosed why the previous recall has failed.

Switching gears when it “wants to”

Leading up to this recall, Pathfinder owners filed a litany of complaints with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), describing their harrowing experiences with the brake light switch and related issues. Some drivers said that their brake lights were constantly lit, sometimes draining the battery.  Owners described the car switching “from reverse to drive… when it wants to.” The cars would also stall after stopping or randomly, while out on a highway, “becoming a life hazard” for the driver and his family.

Risks

Functioning brake lights warn drivers when someone is slowing down. If the brake lights are constantly on, other drivers will not know when a car is actually braking, increasing the risk of a crash.

The defect also allows drivers to start the car and shift out of park without pressing on the brake. This may cause the car to roll away, putting people who are in the way at risk.

Some vehicles may also stall, which can be dangerous, particularly on the freeway. Read more about what to do if your car stalls while you’re driving.

The repair

Nissan dealers will check to see if the car’s brake light relay has already been fixed. If it has not, Nissan will replace the switch and change its placement on the brake to prevent the problem from recurring. Recall notifications will be sent to owners starting March 1.

As of January 1, Nissan reported that repair parts were expected to be in short supply until “February”; they did not specify when in February parts were expected to  become available.

Owners who had this repair performed on their own dime before the recall was announced may be eligible for reimbursement through Nissan Consumer Affairs.

Nissan Titan trucks recalled for risk of fire, stalled engine

Franklin, TN – December 30, 2020 – Nissan Motor Company (NASDAQ:NSANY) has recalled 7,583 Titan pickup trucks due to an exposed engine wire. The wire may cause an electrical short, which could give rise to a fire. It could also result in the car stalling, increasing the risk of a crash.

The recall includes 2020 Nissan Titan and Nissan Titan XD pickup trucks.

Recall summary

The engine wiring harness is a group of wires, connectors and terminals that operate each truck’s electrical system. Due to a supplier error in the assembly process, the wiring harness may include an exposed wire.  The issue could cause an electrical short, which could bring about an engine fire or negatively affect engine performance. The latter could result in the car stalling while out on the road, “without the ability to restart.”

Risks

Both an engine fire and a stalled engine could put the car occupants, other motorists and even pedestrians at the risk of getting hit, injured or worse.

For tips on what to do if your car stalls, please see our article about a recent Chrysler recall for a similar issue. For information on steps you need to take in the event of a fire, please refer to our article about a recent BMW recall for contaminated battery, which also created significant fire risk.

The repair

To fix the issue, dealers will need to inspect the engine harness and determine if there are any exposed engine wires. The engine harness will be replaced free of charge, if necessary.  Nissan expects the recall to begin January 27, 2021.
