Kia recalls Telluride SUVs over rollaway risk after driver complaints

Irvine, CA – April 22, 2024 – Kia (OTCMKTS: KIMTF) is recalling 427,407 2020-2022 Kia Telluride SUVs which may roll away when in Park. The defect augments the risk of a crash and injury.

Recall summary

Driveshaft is one of the most critical components in a car which transfers power to the wheels, allowing the vehicle to move forward.

The driveshaft of the affected vehicles may not fully engage due to a manufacturing error. Over time, “partial engagement can cause damage” to the part, allowing the vehicle to roll away even though the gear is placed into Park.

Recall risks

The risks of this recall are laid out in an article about a Kia recall due to the same risk.

Warning signs

Apart from a “grinding noise,” the driver may notice the SUV lacks power during acceleration.

Safety tips

The manufacturer advises drivers to engage the emergency parking brake when they leave the car to prevent the rollaway.

Background of the recall

The recall follows “ten warranty claims, three techline cases and four customer complaints.” No injuries or crashes have been reported.

Other Kia recalls

Some of these 2020 Kia Telluride SUVs are possibly affected by a recent recall caused by inoperable highlights, following a U.S. government investigation.

On a separate note, a potential fire caused by an oil leak was the reason why certain Kia Stinger and K900 were recalled a month ago.

The repair

Dealers will update the Electronic Parking Brake (EPB) software so it activates when the transmission is shifted into Drive or when the driver opens the door. The repair will be free of charge.

Letters with detailed instructions will be sent to drivers between May 15, 2024 and May 17, 2024.

Hyundai recalls Genesis SUVs over rollaway risk

Fountain Valley, CA – April 16, 2024 – Hyundai (OTCMKTS:HYMTF) is recalling 15,645 2024 Genesis GV70 SUVs which may switch gears on their own, resulting in a rollaway. The defect augments the risk of a crash and injury.

Recall summary

The automatic transmission in a car is connected to a control module and the rest of the vehicle’s electronics with a wiring harness.

In the affected vehicles, the wiring harness was not sealed correctly due to a supplier error, allowing moisture to get inside. This may cause an electrical short and result in the transmission shifting out of Park on its own when the car is stationary.

Recall risks

The vehicle may roll away, especially if there is nobody behind the wheel. This ups the risk of a crash, injury, or property damage.

Safety tips

Owners should turn the ignition off and use the emergency parking brake while parked.

Warning signs

A short in the transmission’s wiring might trigger a malfunction indicator light (MIL) on the dashboard.

Other Hyundai recalls

In September 2023, the manufacturer recalled roughly 38,000 Elantra hybrids that would accelerate on their own, as reported.

In October 2023, Hyundai and its sister company Kia recalled 3.4 million cars that could burst into flames while parked, also as reported.

The repair

Dealers will replace the harness free of charge. Drivers who paid for their own repairs before the recall was issued are eligible for reimbursement.

Owners should receive letters with more information on May 14, 2024.

Ford issues third recall for Ford Explorer SUVs that may lose power or roll away

Dearborn, MI – October 31, 2023 – Ford (NYSE:F) is recalling 238,364 2020-2022 Ford Explorer SUVs that may stall or roll away. Both situations increase the risk of a crash and injury.

The recall comes on the heels of an U.S. government investigation, a driver sliding into a pole and a multitude of customer complaints.

Recall summary

Part of the drivetrain – called driveshaft – may disconnect from the rear axle, which is responsible for transmitting power to the vehicle’s rear wheels and moving the car forward. The disconnection is caused by a bolt which may fracture due to a supplier error.

Background of the recall

Ford recalled the majority of the affected vehicles last May, as reported. In some cases, instead of replacing the bolt, the manufacturer opted to deploy a software update which was designed the get the parking brake engaged to prevent rollaway once the vehicle stopped moving. The update did not address the stall issue and it later turned out that some of the involved vehicles received the update that did not even result in the engagement of the parking brake when needed.

This caused Ford to issue another recall to release the correct software update.

Amidst the recalls, the U.S. government auto safety regulator, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) launched an investigation after receiving two complaints alleging the loss of motive power in vehicles that have undergone repair.

The agency concluded that the software remedy was inadequate and ordered the present recall.

Recall risks

All the risks correspondent to a stall are described in this article about a related Mercedes-Benz recall.

A rollaway may lead to the vehicle hitting a stationary object, like a pole, which is exactly what happened to one of the drivers who filed a NHTSA complaint that led to this recall. No injuries were reported in that case but, overall, the defect did result in nearly 400 complaints and close to two dozen rollaway or stalling incidents .

Warning signs

The driver may hear “loud, grinding, binding, or clunking noises” coming from the back of the vehicle.

Other Ford recalls

Drivetrain failure and corresponding rollaway were the cause of a recent Ford recall affecting a batch of heavy-duty pickup trucks

More than a three-quarter of a million F-150 trucks were recalled in August 2023 because their parking brakes would engage on their own.

The repair

Dealers will replace the bushing and the bolt that holds the rear axle with a stronger one. In addition, they will check the axle’s cover for damage and replace it if necessary.

This repair will be free of charge.

Owners should be notified between November 6, 2023  and November 10, 2023.
