Kia recalls Telluride SUVs with faulty high beams

Irvine, CA – April 9, 2024 – Kia (OTCMKTS:KIMTF) has issued a recall for 35,031 2020 Telluride SUVs equipped with “inoperative” high beams. The defect ups the risk of a crash and comes on the back of thousands of customer complaints, alleged deer strikes and a U.S. government investigation.

Recall summary  

Halogen headlights have a high beam shield gear mechanism that allows drivers to switch between low beam and high beam modes. In the affected vehicles, the heat generated by the halogen bulb could damage the shield gear mechanism, disabling the high beam mode.

Background of the recall

The U.S. government auto safety regulator, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), opened an investigation into the issue in January 2023. Kia initially refused to recall the cars  – offering an extended warranty instead –  but eventually relented after meeting with NHTSA. 

The recall comes on the heels of nearly 5,000 warranty claims, 839 “techline cases,” 543 customer complaints and “three unconfirmed deer strikes.” No injuries have been reported.

Other Kia recalls

In February 2023, Kia issued a Telluride SUV recall due to airbags that would not deploy, as reported.

More recently, the automaker recalled Kia K900 and Stinger cars that could catch fire due to an oil leak. The recall was the latest in the long string of Kia fire-related recalls, some of which are also subject to an ongoing U.S. government investigation, also as reported.

The repair

Dealers will fix the issue by either attaching a clip to hold the shield gear in place or replacing the headlight assembly. The repairs will be free of charge. Kia will reimburse owners who paid for their own repairs before the recall was announced.

Owners will receive letters with more information on April 25, 2024.

Ford recalls Bronco SUVs over defective child locks

Dearborn, MI  – April 4, 2024 – Ford (NYSE:F) is recalling 9,847 2023-2024 Bronco 4-door SUVs due to malfunctioning child safety locks. The issue raises the risk of injuries to child passengers.

Recall summary  

A child safety lock prevents children from accidentally opening the vehicle’s rear doors from the inside. A switch on the door’s edge must be engaged to activate this feature.

On the affected vehicles, a manufacturing error may result in left rear door opening when a passenger pulls on the handle from the inside, despite the child lock being engaged.

Other Ford recalls

In January 2024, Ford recalled Maverick pickups due to faulty turn signal warnings, as reported.

In February 2024, Ford also recalled around 1.9 million SUVs because of detaching exterior trims, also as reported.  

The repair

Dealers will replace the child safety lock mechanisms free of charge. Ford will reimburse owners who had repairs done before the recall was announced.

US government investigates Honda over sudden braking

Washington, D.C. – April 2, 2024 – The U.S. government’s auto safety regulator is investigating Honda (NYSE:HMC) whose vehicles that may brake unexpectedly on their own. This ups the risk of a crash and injury. 

If the investigation leads to a recall, it could affect an estimated 250,000 vehicles, including: 

  • 2019­ – 2022 Honda Insight
  • 2019 – 2022 Honda Passport

Investigation summary  ­­

The regulator, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), opened an investigation on March 7, citing 46 complaints due to an alleged malfunction of the Automatic Emergency Braking (AEB) system.

AEB warns the driver about any oncoming obstacles and applies the brakes on its own if necessary. 

The affected vehicles’ AEB may cause the vehicle to start braking sharply, although there are no visible obstacles in front of it. 

Risks

A vehicle that slams on its brakes without any apparent reason could get rear-ended by other motorists. Furthermore, this sudden and unexpected action may startle and confuse the driver, causing him to lose control of the car. 

In fact, the alleged defect has already resulted in three crashes and two injuries.

Other Honda recalls 

In February 2024, Honda recalled 750,000 cars whose airbags may deploy incorrectly, hurting children. 

On a separate note, some of these Honda Passport SUVs may have been affected by a large-scale recall caused by malfunctioning rearview cameras, as reported.

Auburn Hills, MI  – March 28, 2024 – Stellantis (NYSE:STLA), which owns Dodge and Alfa Romeo brands, is recalling 36,093 SUVs over an error in the vehicles’ weight capacity labels. The defect ups the risk of an accident.

The recall covers the following vehicles: 

  • 2023 – 2024 Alfa Romeo Tonale
  • 2023 – 2024 Dodge Hornet

Recall summary  

A tire placard indicates the vehicle’s maximum weight capacity, guiding users on how many passengers and how much cargo the vehicle can safely carry.

An incorrect tire placard placed on the affected vehicles may mislead owners into thinking that the vehicle can carry much heavier loads than intended, which could lead to overloading. 

Recall risks

All risks concerning improper load labels are explained in this report about a similar recall by Ford.  

Other Stellantis recalls

Earlier this month, Stellantis recalled close to 200,000 Jeep Grand Cherokee and Wrangler SUVs with faulty windshield defrosting systems, as reported.

The repair

Dealers will cover the inaccurate tire placards with updated labels free of charge.

Nissan recalls new Pathfinder and Infiniti SUVs with faulty seat belts

Franklin, TN – March 26, 2024 – Nissan (OTCMKTS:NSANY), which owns the Infiniti brand, is recalling 12,019 SUVs because their seat belts may not “properly restrain” the driver in an accident. This ups the risk of injury.

The following models are affected by this recall: 

  • 2024 Nissan Pathfinder
  • 2024 Infiniti QX60

Recall summary

When there is a crash, the seat belt tightens against the occupant torso to prevent him from flying through the windshield. This is achieved thanks to the seat belt pretensioner, as reported.

The pretensioner in the affected cars is missing a metal pin used to hold it together. As a result, it may not work as intended.

Recall risks

If the driver is not properly restrained during a crash, he or she may suffer greater injuries.

Other Nissan recalls

Earlier this month, Nissan recalled over 9,700 Rogue SUVs whose pretensioners were bent during the manufacturing process, as reported.

Over 230,000 Sentra sedans were recalled for the second time in September 2023 due to the loss of steering, also as reported.

The repair

Dealers will replace the faulty pretensioners free of charge.

Kia issues another fire-related recall; K90 and Stinger cars affected

Irvine, CA – March 21, 2024 – Kia (OTCMKTS:KIMTF) is recalling 36,248 cars over an oil leak that may cause a fire. This ups the risk of a crash, injury and property damage. 

The recall comes on the heels of a fire and represents the latest episode in the series of Kia- and Hyundai-fire related recalls.

The affected cars have a turbo gasoline 3.3-liter engine and encompass the following models:

  • 2019 – 2020 Kia K900
  • 2018 – 2023 Kia Stinger

Recall summary

To increase power output, the engines in these cars are fitted with two turbochargers, one for each cylinder bank. Each turbocharger is lubricated with engine oil, which is delivered through a metal pipe. 

In the affected vehicles, the pipe for the left-hand turbo may become brittle because of heat exposure and develop a leak, allowing oil to drip onto hot exhaust components.  

Recall risks

Oil leaks inside the engine bay can lead to a fire, upping the risk of a crash and injury. In addition, the fire from a burning car may spread to other vehicles or structures, causing property damage. 

Warning signs

Oil dripping on the hot exhaust may cause a strong “burning smell” and “white smoke.” In addition, the “oil pressure warning light” may come on. 

Other Kia recalls

The 2019 Kia Stinger was previously recalled for the risk of fire in October 2020, as reported. As of October 2023 – the last date for which information was available – over 4,241 cars still needed repair.

Background of the recall

The recall comes on the back of one engine compartment fire. No injuries or accidents have been reported.

Over the past couple of years, Kia and its sister company Hyundai have recalled millions of cars because of non-crash related fires, some of which may occur even when the car is turned off and parked. 

The manufacturers are currently subject to an ongoing U.S. government investigation to determine both the adequacy of existing recalls and see if more cars need to be recalled, as reported.

Atlanta, GA – March 18, 2024 – Porsche (OTCMKTS:POAHY) is recalling 8,101 2020-2024 Porsche 911 sport cars because of windshields or rear windows that may detach in a crash, increasing the risk of an injury. 

Recall summary

In the affected vehicles, the rear windows and windshields were not glued correctly to the body of the car due to a supplier error. This may cause them to detach in a crash, which would minimize “the full protective effect” of the airbags.

Recall risks

The defect augments the risk of injury.

Warning signs

An insufficiently bonded windshield or rear window may cause water leaks. The driver may also perceive “wind noise.”

Other Porsche recalls

In January 2024, Porsche recalled over 40,000 hybrid cars and SUVs over a risk of fire, as reported.

A potential fire was also the cause of another Porsche recall, which took place in February 2023 and affected various Panamera models. 

The repair

Franklin, TN – March 14, 2024 – Nissan (OTCMKTS:NSANY) is recalling 9,720 2023 Nissan Rogue SUVs whose seat belts may not operate as intended in a crash, increasing the risk of an injury. 

Recall summary

The seat belt pretensioner is a safety device that pulls the seat belt firmly against the passenger’s torso in a crash to reduce the risk of injury. The affected SUVs ended up with “crimped” pretensioners in the “driver and front passenger seat belts” due to a supplier error. 

As a result, they may not work correctly in a crash and fail to protect the occupants.

Recall risks

The lack of restraint may result in an injury in a crash.

Other Nissan recalls

Electrical issues that resulted in a stall were a cause of a Nissan Ariya recall that took place in November 2023, as reported.

In September 2023, Nissan recalled over 150,000 sedans over defective rearview cameras, also as reported.

Ford issues second recall of E-Series vans over power steering issue

Dearborn, MI  – March 11, 2024 – Ford (NYSE:F) is recalling 16,543 vehicles over a problem with the power steering feature, which may up the risk of a crash.

This is the second recall for the issue that comes on the back of hundreds of warranty claims and one accident. Vehicles that were previously repaired “will need a new remedy” performed.

The recall covers the following models: 

  • 2021 – 2022 Ford E-350
  • 2021 – 2022 Ford E-450

Recall summary  

The power steering and brake boost systems in cars are interconnected thanks to a power steering pump which supplies fluid to both systems, enabling their function.

In the affected vehicles, a faulty connection between the power steering pressure line and the brake Hydroboost unit could result in either a “leak or sudden loss of power steering fluid.”        

Recall risks

Insufficient or loss of power steering fluid can make the vehicle much harder to steer and brake during use, compromising drivability and upping the risk of a crash.  

Other Ford recalls

In December 2023, Ford recalled close to 190,000 Mustangs over reduced braking capability, as reported.

In January 2024, Ford issued a recall for Maverick pickups because of faulty turn signals, also as reported.  

Background of the recall 

Ford initially recalled more than 44,000 E-Series vehicles equipped with dual rear wheels in February 2022 due to a power steering fluid leak issue. The company opened an investigation in August 2023 after receiving reports that the problem remained on vehicles that were previously repaired.

Ford has recorded one accident that may be related to the issue and received 628 warranty claims leading up to the recall. No injuries have been reported.

The repair

Dealers will replace the appropriate power steering and brake booster components free of charge. Ford will reimburse owners who paid for their own repairs prior to the recall being issued.

Owners will be notified by March 29, 2024.

Hyundai issues umpteenth recall for car fires, tells owners to ‘park away from structures’

Fountain Valley, CA – March 7, 2024 – Hyundai (OTCMKTS: HYMTF), who also owns the Genesis brand, is recalling 90,907 cars that may burst into flames while parked and switched off.

This recall comes on the back of multiple “thermal incidents” and is the latest in the string of countless fire-related recalls issued by Hyundai and its sister company Kia.

 The following models are affected by the latest round: 

  • 2017 – 2019 Genesis G80
  • 2017 – 2019 Genesis G90
  • 2015 – 2016 Hyundai Genesis
  • 2019 Genesis G70

Recall summary  

The starter is a component that cranks the engine when the driver presses the ignition button. It works in conjunction with the so-called starter solenoid, which is an electromagnet which sits on top of the starter and relays a “large electric current through the starter, which in turn sets the engine in motion.”

In the affected vehicle, the solenoid may develop a short as a result of moisture getting into it. This may cause it to overheat and catch fire. 

Recall risks

All risks posed by a vehicle fire are well-documented in many previous recalls, such as this one from December 2023, which affected hybrid Jeep Wrangler SUVs.

Warning signs

Apart from the obvious – fire coming from under the hood – a short could cause burning smells and smoke or prevent the engine from starting.

The repair

Dealers will install an additional relay kit in the vehicle’s electrical system, which should prevent the short circuit and consequent fire. This repair is free of charge.
