Jacksonville, FL – November 21, 2021 – Daimler (OTCMKTS:DMLRY), which owns the Mercedes-Benz brand, has recalled 9,120 cars that may stall due to a computer issue. This increases the risk of a crash.

The recall includes:

  • 2021 – 2022 Mercedes-Benz s580 sedans
  • 2021 – 2022 Mercedes-Benz s580 4matic sedans
  • 2021 – 2022 Mercedes Benz Maybach s580 sedans

Recall summary  

The engine control unit (ECU) is a computer inside the car that ensures engine’s performance. Due to a software issue caused by the supplier of the unit, the affected s580’s may suddenly stall, without warning, after the car is started. 

Drivers may not be able to restart the car after it is stalled.

The ECU at the center of this recall has with multiple part numbers, including A1779023611 and A1779023911.

Recall risks

The repair

Dealers will update the software in these vehicles free of charge. Drivers will be sent letters with more information about the recall before December 28, 2021.

Stellantis recalls vehicles whose spoilers may fly away

Auburn Hills, MI   – November 20, 2021 – Stellantis (NYSE: STLA), which owns the Dodge brand, is recalling 4,837 2021 Dodge Durango SUVs with rear spoilers that may detach while driving. This creates a road hazard that may increase the risk of a crash or injury for other motorists.

Recall summary  

Vehicles that are part of this Stellantis recall have a spoiler, which is a piece of external trim whose purpose is to give the vehicle a slicker appearance.

In affected vehicles, the spoiler may have been fitted incorrectly, allowing it to press against the roof when opening the liftgate. This contact may damage the spoiler over time.

The component in question is a rear spoiler, with part number 7DY53TZZAB or 7DY56TZZAB. 

Recall risks

A loose spoiler may detach while driving and hit other vehicles, increasing the risk of a crash and injury. It can also land on the road, where it becomes an obstacle that may cause other vehicles to crash. 

Warning signs

When the spoiler is touching the roof, it will create a sound that the driver and passengers can hear. Additionally, if it becomes loose, it will rattle while driving. 

Other Dodge Durango recalls 

Earlier this year, Dodge recalled some of the 2021 Durango SUVs that had a missing side airbag fastener. This may cause the airbag to deploy incorrectly in a crash, increasing the risk of an injury. 

The repair

Dealers will inspect the spoilers on affected vehicles and replace them with redesigned variants if needed. Notifications about the repair will be sent to vehicle owners around December 17, 2021.

Ferrari recalls vehicles over faulty brakes

Englewood Cliffs, NJ – November 19, 2021 – Ferrari (NYSE: RACE) is recalling 9,985 cars whose brakes may fail, increasing the risk of a crash. The following sports cars are part of this recall: 

  • 2010 – 2015 Ferrari 458 Italia
  • 2014  – 2015 Ferrari 458 Speciale 
  • 2012 – 2015 Ferrari 458 Spider
  • 2016 – 2019 Ferrari 488 GTB
  • 2018 Ferrari 488 Spider 
  • 2015 Ferrari 458 Speciale Aperta 

Recall summary  

Similar to most other road vehicles, these Ferrari cars have a brake booster which enhances braking capabilities.

The booster in the recalled vehicles may develop a leak, allowing the brake fluid to escape. If left unchecked, the brake fluid level may become too low, “resulting in a loss of braking ability.”

Background of the recall

Ferrari states that it is not completely sure of the number of vehicles that are affected by this recall nor the root cause. 

The component in question is the master cylinder assembly, which has the brake booster inside it, with part number 000244010. 

Recall risks

If the driver is unable to brake, the risk of an accident is very high.

Warning signs

If the level of brake fluid within its reservoir falls below 50%, the driver will see the following message on the dash, “Brake fluid level low. Go to dealer slowly” and will hear the corresponding audio alert. 

If you receive this message, pull over and have your vehicle towed to the nearest Ferrari service.

Other Ferrari recalls

Earlier model-years of some of the cars included in this recall are under an investigation by the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration (NHTSA) because of fuel leaks out of the cars’ capless fuel fillers, as reported.

The 2019 GTB was among cars recalled in February of 2019 because of a risk of  a fuel leak, which increased the risk of a fire.

Franklin, TN – November 19, 2021 – Nissan (OTCMKTS:NSANY) has recalled 5,905 hybrids that may stall on the road, increasing the risk of an accident. The recall includes the following cars:

  • 2017 Nissan Rogue hybrid vehicles
  • 2018 Nissan Rogue hybrid vehicles
  • 2019 Nissan Rogue hybrid vehicles

Recall summary  

The recall centers around an issue with the engine harness, which is a bundle of wires that connects the engine to the rest of the car. 

In the recalled vehicles, these wires may rub against another part of the car and become damaged, which could cause a short circuit. This might lead to a blown fuse, which would cause the car to lose power entirely and stall.

Recall risks

Background of the recall

The part of the car that the harness may rub against is called the electronic module control (ECM) bracket. The ECM is a computer that controls over 100 elements in the car and the bracket physically supports it.

The harness that is the center of this recall has  part number 240126FM0C.

The repair

Nissan will install a wire harness protector to guard the wires from damage from the Nissan ECM bracket. Nissan will start notifying owners about the recall on December 15.

Nissan  recently recalled over 7,000 other hybrids for another stalling issue. This recall affected Infiniti, Murano and Pathfinder hybrids.

Stellantis is recalling RAM trucks over risk of fire

Auburn Hills, MI  – November 14, 2021 – Stellantis (NYSE: STLA), which owns the Dodge brand, is recalling 131,177 of their heavy-duty pickup trucks that may develop an electrical fire inside the engine compartment. This increases the risk of injury.

This recall is an expansion of a previous recall, comes on the back of multiple fires and customer complaints and includes the following vehicles with Cummins 6.7L Turbo Diesel engine :

  • 2021 Ram 2500
  • 2022 Ram 2500
  • 2021 Ram 3500 
  • 2022 Ram 3500
  • 2021 Ram 4500 
  • 2022 Ram 4500 
  • 2021 Ram 5500
  • 2022 Ram 5500

Recall summary  

The engines of the vehicles that are part of this Ram truck recall have an electrical heater that warms up the air coming into the engine to help it get to running temperatures faster. The heater is controlled by an electrical relay, or a switch. 

Recalled vehicles’ switches may short circuit and overheat, causing a fire inside the engine compartment. This can happen both while driving as well as when the vehicle is parked and the engine is turned off. 

The component in question is a solid-state intake heater grid relay, with part number 68444169AA.  

Background of the recall

This recall appears to be an expansion of a smaller recall conducted in April. The first recall involved the relay with the same part number and affected about 19,000 of the 2021 RAM trucks, as reported. Both relays were made by German manufacturer Eberspaecher. The manufacturer became aware of at least eight fires leading up to the recall.

Recall risks

The flames and smoke may distract the driver and other motorists, which may lead to a crash. In addition, the driver may fail to stop the vehicle in time for its occupants to leave it in a safe manner. Both increase the risk of an injury or an accident.

Other Ram recalls

Over 23,000 RAM ProMaster City vans were recalled in late October because of turn signal indicators that may stop working, increasing the risk of an accident.

The repair

RAM trucks under investigation for stalling issues

Washington, D.C. – November 14, 2021 – U.S. government auto safety regulator is investigating Stellantis (NYSE:STLA) over concerns that 604,651of its RAM pickup trucks could stall. These trucks could be subject to a recall in the future.

The investigation involves the following heavy duty trucks equipped with 6.7L Cummins turbo diesel engines: 

  • 2019 – 2020 RAM 2500 
  • 2019 – 2020 RAM 3500 
  • 2019 – 2020 RAM 4500 
  • 2019 – 2020 RAM 5500 

Investigation summary  

The regulator – the  National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) – opened the investigation on October 14, after receiving 22 complaints and 2 field reports “alleging incidents of stall/loss of motive power as a result of high pressure fuel pump failures,” according to official documents. 

The stalls occurred “at speeds above 25 mph” and “resulted in permanent disablement” of the implicated vehicles, meaning that they would not restart after the power loss occurred. At least one of the complaints mentioned that the vehicle caught fire.

The investigation will also look for the root cause of the fuel pump failures. If NHTSA discovers a safety defect, it may order Stellantis to issue a recall.

Risks

Stalls put vehicles at risk of being hit from behind by faster-moving traffic and there has been at least one crash after a truck stalled, according to the related driver complaints NHTSA has gathered.

Recent RAM truck recalls

Fire safety has prompted two RAM recalls in recent months—19,214 new RAM heavy duty trucks were recalled this year over a faulty relay switch that could cause a fire. Over 30,000 2019 – 2020 RAM 3500, 4500 and 5500 trucks were recalled in August over an engine oil issue that could cause fuel or oil leaks, which are a fire hazard.

Background of the investigation

It is not clear who the supplier of the pump is but one complaint alleged it was made by Bosch.

As the investigation progresses, additional complaints may surface. – In these investigations, the government will typically ask car companies to turn over warranty claim data so it can get a better sense of how widespread the problem is.

Washington, D.C.  – November 13, 2021 – Mazda (OTCMKTS: MZDAY) is recalling 8,648 SUVs whose second-row seats may slide forward during a crash. This increases the risk of an injury.

This recall is affecting the following vehicles:

  • 2020 Mazda CX-9 
  • 2021 Mazda CX-9

Recall summary  

Mazda CX-9 SUVs have second-row “60/40 split bench” seats that allow passengers to adjust their position by sliding them forward or backward.  Split bench is a common seat layout that typically has one smaller and one larger seat which accommodates two people.

Due to a supplier error, the sliding mechanism in the affected vehicles may not lock itself firmly into position in certain situations.  As a result, the second-row seat may not be adequately secured and could slide forward in a collision. 

The affected component is left-side second-row seats with part numbers including TK48-57-25XL and TM53-57-25XD.

Recall risks

A seat that moves forward during a collision would cause the seat belt to press against the passenger more firmly. The resulting higher forces may increase the risk of an injury. 

Other Mazda CX-9 recalls

At this time, this is the only Mazda CX-9 recall that is affecting these particular models. In addition, the Mazda CX-9 crash test rating is among the highest in its class, which ensures excellent passenger safety. 

This month, over 13,000 MazdaSpeed6 and Mazda RX-8 were recalled due to a fuel leak from a cracked fuel pump mount.

The repair

To fix the issue, dealers will replace the affected seat components with improved versions. Notifications about the repair will be sent to vehicle owners around November 26, 2021.

Auburn Hills, MI   –  November 13, 2021 – Stellantis (NYSE: STLA), which owns the Jeep brand, is recalling 7,082 of their 2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee L SUVs, whose high beams may be difficult to activate. The issue reduces visibility and increases the risk of an accident. 

Recall summary  

This Stellantis recall affects certain Jeep Grand Cherokees that are not equipped with “automatic high beams” which turn on and off by themselves as needed.

In these vehicles, drivers are not able to activate the high beams when the light switch is in the “Auto” position. The high beams can only be selected with the headlights in the “On” position. If the driver is not aware of that, he or she may have a hard time activating the high beams.

This issue was caused by an oversight during vehicle programming and affects “Body Controller Modules” with part number 68374988AA. 

Recall risks

Drivers may have limited visibility with the Jeep auto high beams not working. This may prevent them from noticing potential obstacles and result in a crash, which increases the risk of an accident or injury. 

Other Stellantis recalls

The 2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee L cars are subject to another recall that was started in October because of faulty rearview cameras, as reported. It is not clear if there is any overlap between the two recalls.

The repair

Dealers will reprogram the module with updated software to correct this Jeep Grand Cherokee automatic high beams’ issue. Notifications about the repair will be sent to vehicle owners around December 3, 2021.

Ford advises owners not to drive Ranger trucks over faulty seat belts

Dearborn, MI – November 10, 2021 – Ford (NYSE:F) has issued a recall for Ranger trucks that have been equipped with an incorrectly routed front passenger seat belt, which may increase the risk of an injury in a crash. The recall includes 47,683 2019-2021 Ford Ranger Super Cab pickup trucks.

Even though the recall concerns passenger seat belts, the manufacturer advises drivers to inspect both the passenger and the driver seat belt and to NOT use the front seat or drive the car or if the respective seat belts are found to be defective.

Instructions on how to perform the inspection should be mailed next week.

The affected component is the “RH Front Outboard Seatbelt Assembly” with part number KB3B-21612D64-AL.

Recall summary

The affected vehicles are equipped with a front passenger seat belt that has not been appropriately routed. The faulty seat belt assemblies have only made their way onto the Super Cab body style Ranger models, and the Crew Cab body style has not been affected. 

Background of the recall

This is the second recall that Ford is doing for this issue this fall. Last month, the manufacturer recalled 2021 F-150 Super Cab pickup trucks. These trucks should also not be driven if the seat belts on them are not properly routed, as reported.

Recall risks

The improperly routed seat belt may not do an adequate job at restraining the occupant in the event of an accident. This can result in severe injury or even death.

Other Ford recalls

Last month, Ford recalled nearly 40,000 units of the 2020 Ford Ranger Super Cab and 2021 Ford Ranger Super Cab, whose backseat headrests are incompatible with some children’s car seats.

The last 2019 Ford Ranger recall was over a year ago.

The repair

Ford will advise owners on how to perform a self-assessment of their Ranger’s seat belts. The self-assessment will help them decide on whether either seat belt is faulty. If the driver seat belt is defective or the driver is unsure of the results or does not want to perform the assessment, the car should be towed for inspection.

If the passenger seat belts is found to be misrouted, the seat should not be occupied but the car can still be driven. Regardless of the results of the assessment, owners are advised to take their car to a dealership for a secondary inspection. Any repairs that need to be performed will be done for free.

Affected owners will be notified between November 15 and November 19, 2021.

Volvo recalls station wagons over exploding airbags

Ridgeville, SC – November 7, 2021 – Volvo (OTCMKTS:VLVLY) has recalled 194,546 cars because the driver-side airbag may explode and hurt shrapnel at vehicle occupants when deployed. This increases the risk of injury or even death for the occupants of the vehicle.

The recall follows on the heels of another recent Volvo recall due to the same issue and includes the following station wagons:

  • 2001 – 2007 Volvo V70
  • 2001 – 2007 Volvo XC70

Recall summary  

The Volvo V70 and Volvo XC70 airbag inflators under recall, built by German-American parts’ supplier ZF,  have a similar problem to the infamous Takata airbag — moisture, over time, corrodes explosive tablets inside the airbag inflator.

The degraded tablets, which are only supposed to explode hard enough to fill the airbag with gas, create a much larger explosion than intended. This may destroy the inflator and send its pieces flying through the vehicle with great force, resulting in an injury to its occupants.

Recall risks

The risks posed by this defect match those in the Takata airbag recall: Shrapnel from burst airbag inflators can cause injuries that sometimes resemble gunshot or stab wounds, and can be fatal. Takata airbags have killed at least 28 people worldwide. 

The repair

All owners of vehicles in this recall are entitled to a free airbag replacement from a Volvo dealer. Notification letters with more instructions will be sent out on December 14.
