Mazda recalls vehicles with seats that may slide forward

Washington, D.C.  – November 13, 2021 – Mazda (OTCMKTS: MZDAY) is recalling 8,648 SUVs whose second-row seats may slide forward during a crash. This increases the risk of an injury.

This recall is affecting the following vehicles:

  • 2020 Mazda CX-9 
  • 2021 Mazda CX-9

Recall summary  

Mazda CX-9 SUVs have second-row “60/40 split bench” seats that allow passengers to adjust their position by sliding them forward or backward.  Split bench is a common seat layout that typically has one smaller and one larger seat which accommodates two people.

Due to a supplier error, the sliding mechanism in the affected vehicles may not lock itself firmly into position in certain situations.  As a result, the second-row seat may not be adequately secured and could slide forward in a collision. 

The affected component is left-side second-row seats with part numbers including TK48-57-25XL and TM53-57-25XD.

Recall risks

A seat that moves forward during a collision would cause the seat belt to press against the passenger more firmly. The resulting higher forces may increase the risk of an injury. 

Other Mazda CX-9 recalls

At this time, this is the only Mazda CX-9 recall that is affecting these particular models. In addition, the Mazda CX-9 crash test rating is among the highest in its class, which ensures excellent passenger safety. 

This month, over 13,000 MazdaSpeed6 and Mazda RX-8 were recalled due to a fuel leak from a cracked fuel pump mount.

The repair

To fix the issue, dealers will replace the affected seat components with improved versions. Notifications about the repair will be sent to vehicle owners around November 26, 2021.

Stellantis recalls vehicles over high beam activation issue

Auburn Hills, MI   –  November 13, 2021 – Stellantis (NYSE: STLA), which owns the Jeep brand, is recalling 7,082 of their 2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee L SUVs, whose high beams may be difficult to activate. The issue reduces visibility and increases the risk of an accident. 

Recall summary  

This Stellantis recall affects certain Jeep Grand Cherokees that are not equipped with “automatic high beams” which turn on and off by themselves as needed.

In these vehicles, drivers are not able to activate the high beams when the light switch is in the “Auto” position. The high beams can only be selected with the headlights in the “On” position. If the driver is not aware of that, he or she may have a hard time activating the high beams.

This issue was caused by an oversight during vehicle programming and affects “Body Controller Modules” with part number 68374988AA. 

Recall risks

Drivers may have limited visibility with the Jeep auto high beams not working. This may prevent them from noticing potential obstacles and result in a crash, which increases the risk of an accident or injury. 

Other Stellantis recalls

The 2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee L cars are subject to another recall that was started in October because of faulty rearview cameras, as reported. It is not clear if there is any overlap between the two recalls.

The repair

Dealers will reprogram the module with updated software to correct this Jeep Grand Cherokee automatic high beams’ issue. Notifications about the repair will be sent to vehicle owners around December 3, 2021.

Ford advises owners not to drive Ranger trucks over faulty seat belts

Dearborn, MI – November 10, 2021 – Ford (NYSE:F) has issued a recall for Ranger trucks that have been equipped with an incorrectly routed front passenger seat belt, which may increase the risk of an injury in a crash. The recall includes 47,683 2019-2021 Ford Ranger Super Cab pickup trucks.

Even though the recall concerns passenger seat belts, the manufacturer advises drivers to inspect both the passenger and the driver seat belt and to NOT use the front seat or drive the car or if the respective seat belts are found to be defective.

Instructions on how to perform the inspection should be mailed next week.

The affected component is the “RH Front Outboard Seatbelt Assembly” with part number KB3B-21612D64-AL.

Recall summary

The affected vehicles are equipped with a front passenger seat belt that has not been appropriately routed. The faulty seat belt assemblies have only made their way onto the Super Cab body style Ranger models, and the Crew Cab body style has not been affected. 

Background of the recall

This is the second recall that Ford is doing for this issue this fall. Last month, the manufacturer recalled 2021 F-150 Super Cab pickup trucks. These trucks should also not be driven if the seat belts on them are not properly routed, as reported.

Recall risks

The improperly routed seat belt may not do an adequate job at restraining the occupant in the event of an accident. This can result in severe injury or even death.

Other Ford recalls

Last month, Ford recalled nearly 40,000 units of the 2020 Ford Ranger Super Cab and 2021 Ford Ranger Super Cab, whose backseat headrests are incompatible with some children’s car seats.

The last 2019 Ford Ranger recall was over a year ago.

The repair

Ford will advise owners on how to perform a self-assessment of their Ranger’s seat belts. The self-assessment will help them decide on whether either seat belt is faulty. If the driver seat belt is defective or the driver is unsure of the results or does not want to perform the assessment, the car should be towed for inspection.

If the passenger seat belts is found to be misrouted, the seat should not be occupied but the car can still be driven. Regardless of the results of the assessment, owners are advised to take their car to a dealership for a secondary inspection. Any repairs that need to be performed will be done for free.

Affected owners will be notified between November 15 and November 19, 2021.

Volvo recalls station wagons over exploding airbags

Ridgeville, SC – November 7, 2021 – Volvo (OTCMKTS:VLVLY) has recalled 194,546 cars because the driver-side airbag may explode and hurt shrapnel at vehicle occupants when deployed. This increases the risk of injury or even death for the occupants of the vehicle.

The recall follows on the heels of another recent Volvo recall due to the same issue and includes the following station wagons:

  • 2001 – 2007 Volvo V70
  • 2001 – 2007 Volvo XC70

Recall summary  

The Volvo V70 and Volvo XC70 airbag inflators under recall, built by German-American parts’ supplier ZF,  have a similar problem to the infamous Takata airbag — moisture, over time, corrodes explosive tablets inside the airbag inflator.

The degraded tablets, which are only supposed to explode hard enough to fill the airbag with gas, create a much larger explosion than intended. This may destroy the inflator and send its pieces flying through the vehicle with great force, resulting in an injury to its occupants.

Recall risks

The risks posed by this defect match those in the Takata airbag recall: Shrapnel from burst airbag inflators can cause injuries that sometimes resemble gunshot or stab wounds, and can be fatal. Takata airbags have killed at least 28 people worldwide. 

The repair

All owners of vehicles in this recall are entitled to a free airbag replacement from a Volvo dealer. Notification letters with more instructions will be sent out on December 14.

Kia Sedona recalled for opposite flashing turn signal

Irvine, CA – November 7, 2021 – Kia Motors (OTCMKTS:KIMTF) is recalling 88,576 units of the Kia Sedona minivans with faulty turn signals that may flash in the opposite direction. This can result in a collision. Model years involved in this recall include:

  • 2015 Kia Sedona
  • 2016 Kia Sedona
  • 2017 Kia Sedona

The affected component is the “Smart Junction Box” (SJB) with multiple part numbers starting with 91950.

Recall summary  

This Kia Sedona minivan recall addresses faulty software that incorrectly interprets which turn signal to activate.

There have been no reports of crashes or injuries stemming from the problem.

Warning signs

In an affected vehicle, the unintended turn signal direction will illuminate on the instrument cluster, notifying the driver of the faulty indication.

Recall risks

An inoperable or incorrect turn signal can confuse drivers and pedestrians around you, increasing the risk of an accident.

Other Kia and Hyundai recalls

Hyundai Sonata vehicles were also recalled earlier this week over turn signal problems.

The 2020 Kia Sedona was recalled last month to address a potential fire hazard caused by a loose nut on the alternator.

The last 2016 Kia Sedona recall was conducted in 2019 because of a faulty “occupant detection harness.” The harness may break and fail to detect that there is a child in the front seat in the event of a crash. This may lead to the airbags being deployed and result in an injury to the child. 

The repair

Dealers will update the software on the junction box to resolve the issue. Kia will notify affected owners on November 12, 2021 and will reimburse any repair expenses incurred prior to the recall.

Tesla recalls cars that may brake on their own

Palo Alto, CA – November 6, 2021 – Tesla (NASDAQ:TSLA) has recalled 11,704 cars that may brake unexpectedly or issue a false “collision warning.” This increases the risk of a crash.

The recall is  limited to “full-self driving” cars – that are currently in beta –and includes the following electric cars:

  • 2017 – 2021 Tesla Model 3
  • 2017 – 2021 Tesla Model S 
  • 2017 – 2021 Tesla Model X 
  • 2020 – 2021 Tesla Model Y 

Recall summary  

Due to a faulty over-the-air (OTA) software update issued by Tesla in October, the recalled cars may unexpectedly activate the emergency brake or falsely warn of a collision ahead. 

Background of the recall

This Tesla brakes’ failure issue was identified on the back of owners’ complaints after the update was performed. 

After Tesla began working on the issue, it remotely deactivated the entire forward collision avoidance system. The LA Times reported that owners were not informed of this deactivation, which raised safety concerns. 

Warning signs

A “warning message” is displayed in the instrument panel if the “false-positive braking” happens. The driver may also hear a “warning chime.”

Recall risks

This Tesla brakes’ issue can cause a collision if a car unexpectedly slams on the brakes ahead of faster moving traffic. The false warning messages and chimes can also distract drivers, also raising the risk of an accident.

Recent Tesla recalls

In July, the manufacturer recalled over 5,000 Model 3 and Model Y vehicles with incorrectly fitted seat belts, which increased the risk of an injury in a crash. Earlier that month, the same vehicles were subject to a recall due to the possibility of them losing tire pressure, as reported. 

The company is also a subject to ongoing investigation for its vehicles’ failure to detect emergency vehicles in their path, as reported.

The repair

As of October 29, 99.8% of cars involved in this recall received an OTA update resolving the issue. If you are having issues, make sure your Tesla is set up for remote updates to receive this repair. Go to a dealer if you are having trouble connecting your Tesla to the internet.

MazdaSpeed6 and Mazda RX-8 recalled over fuel leak

Washington, D.C. – November 1, 2021 – Mazda (OTCMKTS:MZDAY) is recalling 13,891 sports cars over a fuel pump that may leak, increasing the risk of a fire. This recall greatly raises the risk of injury for the occupants of the car and nearby motorists and includes:

  • 2009 Mazda RX-8
  • 2010 Mazda RX-8
  • 2011 Mazda RX-8
  • 2006 Mazda MazdaSpeed6
  • 2007 Mazda MazdaSpeed6

The affected component is the “fuel pump mounting ring” with part number BN8F42167.  The MazdaSpeed6 vehicles are also known as Mazda6.

Recall summary  

Vehicles affected by this recall have a fuel pump mounting ring that may crack, resulting in a fuel leak. The mounting ring is the part that attaches the pump to the fuel tank.

The ring may crack due to improper installation or because of heat coming off the engine and exhaust. 

Recall risks

Fuel that sprays onto hot components in the engine compartment can easily ignite and cause a vehicle fire. This increases the risk of a crash, as flames and smoke may distract drivers and cause them to panic. Warning signs

In case of a fuel leak, the owner may smell fuel or notice it under the parked vehicles. 

Other Mazda recalls

The RX-8 and Mazda Mazda6 that are part of this notice are not part of any recent recalls. 

In July, however, the manufacturer recalled over 260,000 Mazda3 vehicles due to the risk of airbag cover logos flying off during a collision and hurting the car occupants, as reported.

The repair

Dealers will install a new mounting ring on the affected vehicles to fix the issue. They will also add a thermal insulation pad to the fuel tank on RX-8 vehicles to improve heat resistance. 

Notifications will be sent to owners around November 23, 2021.

Toyota recalls Prius hybrids that may stall

Plano, TX – November 1, 2021 – Toyota (NYSE:TM) is recalling 8,411 Toyota Prius hybrid vehicles over a concern that the hybrid system may shut down, causing a loss of power. This may cause cars to stall, increasing the risk of a crash. The affected models include:

  • 2022 Toyota Prius
  • 2022 Toyota Prius Prime

The affected component is the “Hybrid Vehicle ECU” with multiple part numbers that begin with “89981.”

Recall summary  

The recall centers around faulty software with the car’s Electronic Control Unit (ECU), which is the part that controls all the electronic functions of the vehicle. The ECU may falsely detect an error on the affected vehicles and shut down the vehicle’s hybrid system, resulting in an immediate loss of power.

To the best of our knowledge, the Prius battery ECU is unaffected by this recall.

Recall risks

A loss in power can cause the vehicle to come to a sudden halt. As reported, stalling while driving may result in the car getting hit from behind, injuring both cars’ drivers and passengers.

Warning signs

The vehicle warning lights may come on, letting the driver know of the impending shutdown.

Other Toyota recalls

​​The 2022 Prius and 2022 Prius Prime have not been subject to any other recalls. Last year, older Prius models were recalled over a power loss issue. However, the affected component was a faulty inverter and not the ECU software. 

Another recent Toyota recall included the 2019-2020 Toyota Yaris to fix a faulty fuel pump that increased the risk of stalling.

The repair

Toyota dealers will update the ECU software on the affected vehicles. 

Owners will be notified on November 20, 2021.
