Daimler issues stop-drive notice for Mercedes-Benz cars over brake failure risk

Jacksonville, FL – May 22, 2022 – Daimler (OTCMKTS:DMLRY), which owns the Mercedes-Benz brand, is issuing a stop-drive notice and recall for 292,287 vehicles over an issue with the braking system that may lead to a complete brake failure.

The recall affects 2006 – 2012 Mercedes-Benz R-Class, ML-Class, and GL-Class vehicles. The following models are subject to the recall:

  • 2007 – 2012 Mercedes-Benz GL450

Recall summary

A brake booster enhances the performance of the vehicle’s brakes. This makes it easier for the driver to increase the braking force without having to step too hard on the brake pedal.

In the affected vehicles, the brake booster is encased in a rubber sleeve for aesthetic purposes. Due to a supplier error, water can enter inside the sleeve, causing the brake booster to corrode and leak. 

This could require the driver to press the brake pedal harder than usual to slow the vehicle down. In some cases, the brake pedal may disconnect from the braking system, preventing drivers from stopping the vehicle altogether.

The component involved in this recall is the brake booster with multiple part numbers including A1644310427, A1644310527 and A1644310627.

Recall risks

Brake failure may make it difficult or impossible to slow down or stop the vehicle. This significantly increases the risk of a crash or injury.

Warning signs

Drivers might observe a hissing sound when pressing the brake pedal. They might also notice that the brake pedal is not as responsive as usual.

Other Mercedes-Benz recalls 

In March 2022, Daimler announced a recall of 28,743 Mercedes-Benz Metris vans over over reduced braking performance that could increase the risk of a crash.

Mercedes-Benz recalls also include certain models of the Mercedes-Benz GLE Class spanning the 2020 to 2022 model years and equipped with mild-hybrid powertrains, which were recalled earlier this month because of the risk of fire.

The repair

Dealers will remove the rubber sleeve to prevent further corrosion and inspect the brake booster housing. Vehicles with minimal corrosion can still be driven normally “for up to two years” before requiring another repair. Vehicles that fail the test must have their brake boosters replaced.

Affected owners are advised not to drive their vehicles. They will be notified of the recall by May 27, 2022.

Tesla issues recall due to loss of access to essential functions

Austin, TX – May 21, 2022 – Tesla (NASDAQ:TSLA) is recalling 129,960 vehicles because the infotainment system’s central processing unit (CPU) may overheat, resulting in a loss of access to essential functions, such as warning lights.

This increases the risk of a crash or injury.

The recall includes the following models:

  • 2021 – 2022 Tesla Model S
  • 2021 – 2022 Tesla Model X
  • 2022 Tesla Model 3
  • 2022 Tesla Model Y

Recall summary

During the fast-charging process, the infotainment CPU — the processing unit that controls the screen display — may fail to cool down properly due to a firmware issue. The excess heat can slow down the CPU or trigger a restart. As a result, the center screen may lag or go blank.

Recall risks

If the center screen is not functioning properly, the driver may be unable to view features such as the rearview camera image, the gear selection screen, windshield visibility control settings and warning lights. This increases the risk of a crash or injury.

Warning signs

The Tesla infotainment system’s display may lag or appear blank.

Other Tesla recalls

A recent 2022 Tesla Model 3 recall,  announced in May, involved the failure to display the unit of speed (miles per hour or kilometers per hour). The recall also included the 2018 – 2021 model years. 

In April, the 2017 – 2022 models of the same vehicle were recalled for a second time over a faulty pedestrian warning system

Another recall that Tesla issued in April was over airbags that may fail to deploy. The 2021 – 2022 Model X vehicles were part of this recall.

The repair

Tesla started deploying an over-the-air (OTA) software update to address the overheating of the CPU on May 3 at no cost to owners. It is not clear if the update has been rolled out to all affected cars as of the time of this publication.

Owners can expect to receive further communication from Tesla regarding the repair program by July 1, 2022.

Hyundai and Kia recall Ioniq and EV6 cars that may roll away

Fountain Valley, CA – May 21, 2022 – Hyundai (OTCMKTS:HYMTF) and its subsidiary Kia (OTCMKTS:KIMTF) are recalling a total of 19,743 electric SUVs that may roll away while parked, increasing the risk of crashing into pedestrians or other vehicles. The recall involves 10,729 2022 Hyundai Ioniq 5 compact crossover and 9,014 2022 Kia EV6 electric SUVs.

Recall summary  

The affected vehicles have a shifter control unit (SCU) that tells the transmission to lock in place when the vehicle is in Park. As a result of a software issue within the unit the parking mechanism may disengage. If this happens while the vehicle is parked on an incline, the vehicle could roll away, especially if the driver is not present.

The component causing this recall is the shifter control unit, with part numbers 42951-18110 for Hyundai and 42951-18150 for Kia.

Recall risks

As in similar Ford recalls, vehicle rollaway increases the risk of injury from a resulting crash.

Other Hyundai and Kia recalls

There are no other Kia EV6 recalls at this time. (The model only arrived on the market recently.)

The most recent Hyundai Ioniq recalls include one caused by unexpected accelerations which happened in December of last year.

In addition, owners should be aware of ongoing fire-related issues affecting both Hyundai and Kia.

The repair

Dealers will update the shifter control unit software in all affected vehicles. Kia will notify vehicle owners on May 25, 2022, while Hyundai plans to do the same on June 10, 2022. In the meantime, both manufacturers are urging drivers to park on level surfaces and to use the electronic parking brakes in their vehicles.

Ford recalls Explorer SUVs that may roll away

Dearborn, MI — May 15, 2022 — Ford (NYSE:F) is recalling 252,936 SUVs over an issue with part of the vehicles’ drivetrain – called a driveshaft – and transmission which may cause them to roll away, increasing the risk of a crash.

The recall covers the following models: 

  • 2020 –2022 Ford Explorer Hybrid
  • 2020–2022 Ford Explorer Intercept Hybrid
  • 2020 Ford Explorer PHEV
  • 2020 Ford Explorer Police Intercept FHEV

Recall summary

Rear-wheel drive vehicles use a driveshaft to transmit the engine’s power and torque to the rear axle, which in turn transfers the power to wheels, propelling the vehicle forward.

On affected vehicles, the bolt that connects the axle with the driveshaft may fracture because of a supplier error.  This could disconnect the driveshaft from the rear wheels, rendering the vehicle unable to stay in Park and increasing the risk of a rollaway.

The components involved in this recall are the rear axle cover with part number L1MW-4A028-G and the bushing with part number L1MW-4B425-B.

Recall risks

A rollaway ups the risk of a crash and injury.    

Warning signs

Customers and dealer technicians have described the transmission making various sounds such as “loud, grinding, binding, or clunking noises.”

Other Ford recalls 

One recent case of Ford driveshaft issues involved 184,698 F-Series pickup trucks, which were recalled in January over also because of of disconnecting driveshafts, as reported.

In October of last year there was a Ford Explorer recall due to the risk of the driver losing control of the vehicle, also as reported.

A Ford Police Explorer recall was initiated in January 2021, involving contaminated windshield washer fluid that can potentially compromise outward visibility, resulting in an increased risk of accidents.  

The repair

Dealers will replace the bolt and axle covers, if needed. In some cases, a software update will be also be done to ensure that the electronic parking brake will engage when Park is selected. No fees will be collected for the service. Ford will reimburse owners for the costs of any previous repair work involving the component.

Affected owners will be notified between June 6, 2022 and June 10, 2022.

Daimler recalls vans with malfunctioning rearview camera

Sandy Springs, GA – May 15, 2022 – Daimler (OTCMKTS:DMLRY), which owns the Mercedes-Benz and Freightliner brands, is recalling 12,086 vans with rearview cameras that may freeze or fail to display an image. This increases the risk of running into pedestrians or other vehicles while backing up.

 In total, 24 different models are affected by this recall, including the following:

  • 2019 – 2021 Freightliner Sprinter 3500

Recall summary

All vehicles affected by this recall have a rearview camera that shows an image on the central display when backing up. Due to a software issue, the image coming from this camera may fail to appear or may freeze.

The component causing this recall is the software for the rearview camera, with part numbers A2139027817 or A0009022059.

Warning signs  

Drivers may notice a blank or frozen image on the display while reversing. 

Recall risks

Without an image from the rearview camera, the driver’s ability to see behind the vehicle while backing up is limited. This may result in property damage or injury to pedestrians, especially if the driver relies solely on the backup camera when going in reverse.

Other Mercedes-Benz recalls

This Mercedes-Benz van recall is not the first one caused by malfunctioning rearview cameras. The latest happened only two weeks ago, affecting a large number of passenger vehicles.

The repair

Dealers will update the camera software in all affected vehicles with a version that meets current specifications. Notifications to vehicle owners will be sent on June 13, 2022 and all repairs will be done free of charge.

BMW issues recall over defective sunroof control unit

Westwood, NJ – May 15, 2022 – BMW (OTCMKTS:BMWYY) is recalling 61,221 vehicles which may allow the sunroof to close even if the key fob is not in the vehicle. This increases the risk of injury.

Recall summary

For safety, and to comply with federal regulations, BMW sunroofs are supposed to close only when the key fob is inside the vehicle, indicating that the driver is present.

The affected sunroofs are programmed incorrectly and can be closed  when the key fob is not in the vehicle.

Recall risks

A sunroof that is closed without the key fob present – by an unaccompanied child, for example – can increase the risk of injury.

Other recent BMW recalls

One of the most recent BMW X5 recalls was in March 2022 and included the 2007-2010 BMW X5 SAV. The heating element of the subject vehicles may short circuit and overheat, increasing the risk of injury to the driver and passengers.

Although there have been no notable BMW X6 recalls or BMW X7 recalls in recent months, there was another BMW sunroof-related recall in 2021. In March, BMW recalled nearly 15,000 vehicles whose sunroofs may close even after the car is turned off. Much like the current recall, this was attributed to a programming error.

The repair

Owners are encouraged to take their vehicles to a BMW dealer. Techs will reprogram the roof function control unit, which is responsible for the opening and closing of the sunroof. Alternatively, owners can opt for an over-the-air (OTA) reprogramming. Both options will be at no cost to owners.

Owners can expect to receive further communication from BMW regarding the repair program by June 13, 2022.

Ford recalls F-Series trucks due to increased risk of rollaway

Dearborn, MI — May 14, 2022 — Ford (NYSE:F) is recalling 23,165 heavy-duty trucks due to an issue with the vehicles’ transmission. The defect can cause the vehicle to roll when it is supposed to be in Park, which increases the risk of a crash. 

The recall covers the following models, all equipped with 6.7-liter diesel engines: 

  • 2020 Ford Super Duty F-250
  • 2020 Ford Super Duty F-350
  • 2020 Ford Super Duty F-450
  • 2020 Ford Super Duty F-550

Recall summary

A washer inside to a vehicle’s transmission of the recalled vehicles protects the gears against debris, dirt and other contaminants. In the affected vehicles, the washer can disintegrate because of “out-of-specification parts” delivered by a supplier.

When this happens, metallic debris can get into the gearset and damage the gear teeth. Debris from the washer or from the damaged gears can also “prevent the vehicle from achieving or holding Park,” resulting in a rollaway.

The components involved in this recall are the output shaft and planetary carrier #4, with part numbers LC3Z-7060-A and LC3Z-7060-B.

Recall risks

Vehicle rollaway increases the risk of injury from a resulting crash.

Warning signs

Drivers may notice that it is harder than usual to shift gears and that shifting may cause grinding, groaning or popping noises. A malfunction indicator may light up on the dashboard and a loss of power may be observed, depending on the damage to the P4 gear teeth.

Other Ford truck recalls 

A Ford F-Series recall of 47,084 2021 F-150 trucks was initiated in April 2022 over a transmission defect caused by a software error. This defect could lead the vehicle to suddenly shift to neutral, preventing the driver from accelerating.

The 2020 and 2021 Ford Super Duty F-350s were the subject of a recall in September 2021 that affected 27,604 vehicles because of the risk of stalling while driving.

The repair

Dealers will inspect the transmission on the affected models and replace part of the gearset free of charge. Ford will reimburse owners for the costs of any previous repair work involving the component.

Affected owners will be notified between May 30, 2022, and June 3, 2022.

Toyota recalls hybrid, conventional and FCEV cars over reduced stability

Plano, TX – May 14, 2022 – Toyota (NYSE:TM) is recalling 458,054 vehicles whose stability control may fail to turn back on automatically after it is turned off. This makes the vehicle less stable during sudden maneuvers, increasing the risk of a crash and injury.

A total of 17 different models are affected by this recall, including the following:

Recall summary  

All cars on this list are equipped with a Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) system. Its job is to prevent the vehicle from skidding during fast maneuvers or when the road is slippery. The drivers may disengage this system, but it is supposed to resume automatically every time the car is restarted. 

As a result of a programming error, the VSC system in affected vehicles may remain disengaged even after the restart. This happens only when the driver keeps her foot on the brake while shutting off the car and turning it back on

As a result, drivers are more likely to lose control of a vehicle, especially when driving fast or on slippery roads.

The component behind this recall is the brake actuator assembly, with multiple part numbers including 44510-48090 or 44540-50231. 

Recall risks

The defect increases the risk of a crash and injury. 

Warning signs

If the VSC is off, a warning light will illuminate on the dashboard.

Other Toyota recalls

There was a Toyota Sienna recall in November 2021, caused by seatbelts that were prone to tearing. In February, the manufacturer recalled 41,544 Toyota Venzas hybrid SUVs because of faulty turn signals, as reported.

The repair

To fix the issue, Toyota and Lexus authorized dealers will reprogram the Vehicle Stability Control ECU (electronic control unit) and install an updated software version. Notifications to vehicle owners will be sent between May 16, 2022 and June 24, 2022.

Porsche recalls vehicles with malfunctioning airbags

Atlanta, GA – May 8, 2022 – Porsche (OTCMKTS:POAHY) is recalling 9,570 2020-2021 Porsche Taycan sedans. whose airbags may fail to deploy as a result of damaged wiring. This reduces the level of protection in an event of a crash, increasing the risk of an injury.

Recall summary  

The airbags in the recalled vehicles are powered by wiring harnesses under the driver and passenger seats. Because of a supplier error, the harness can get caught up in the seat adjustment mechanism and become damaged when the seats get adjusted.

This can render the vehicle’s airbags inoperable.

The component causing this recall is the seat wire harness with part number N105938. 

Recall risks

Airbag failing to deploy increases the risk of injury in a crash. 

Warning signs

The airbag warning light will appear on the dashboard in case the wires that connect to them get damaged. Apart from that, occupants may have a hard time adjusting the seats or notice “ abnormal noise during adjustment.

Other Porsche Taycan recalls

This is not the only Porsche EV Recall that may be affecting these vehicles. Some of them could also have an issue with inaccessible child seat anchors, which prompted a recall last month. 

The repair

Dealers will inspect the harness under both front seats and repair any worn wiring. In addition, to prevent any future damage, they will wrap the harness with textile fabric tape. Notifications to vehicle owners will be sent on June 24, 2022 and all repairs will be done free of charge.

Volvo recalls XC40 BEV SUVs that may accelerate on their own

Ridgeville, SC – May 7, 2022 – Volvo (OTCMKTS:VLVLY) is recalling 5,351 SUVs with malfunctioning accelerator pedals. This can cause unintentional acceleration or deceleration, increasing the risk of injury or property damage.

The recall affects the following hybrid SUVs:

  • 2021 Volvo XC40 BEV
  • 2022  Volvo XC40 BEV

Recall summary  

On affected Volvo SUVs, a harness that connects to the accelerator pedal housing may not be watertight. As a result, moisture could get in, causing corrosion and interfering with the accelerator pedal’s electrical signals.  This may cause “unintended acceleration,” no acceleration or a stall.

The component causing this recall is the accelerator pedal harness. The exact part number has not been reported at this time. 

Recall risks

Accelerating or decelerating unpredictably increases the risk of crashes and injuries.

Warning signs

Drivers may notice problems with acceleration, including unintentional acceleration, poor pedal response, jerking, failure to accelerate or loss of drive. 

Other Volvo recalls

In October 2021, there was a Volvo EV recall due to faulty retractors that may fail to fully secure child seats, as reported. The recall included XC40 pure electric cars, as well multiple gasoline-powered models.

In November of last year, V70 and XC70 wagons were recalled due to exploding airbags, also as reported.

The repair

To fix these Volvo electrical issues, dealers will modify the wiring harness to prevent water intrusion. They will also replace the accelerator pedal sensor and its connection points if there is corrosion.

Notifications to vehicle owners will be sent on June 20, 2022 and all repairs will be made free of charge.
