Nissan recalls more Rogue SUVs over wiring corrosion, fire risk

Franklin, TN – December 7, 2022 – Nissan (OTCMKTS:NSANY) is recalling 125,215 2017 Nissan Rogue crossover SUVs because of corrosion in the wiring system, which increases the risk of fire. This is an expansion of a January 2022 recall for the same issue, which at the time only affected the 2014-2016 model years.

Recall summary

The dash side harness is a set of wires and connectors located under the dashboard. In the affected vehicles, water and salt could collect in the area under the driver’s feet, then make their way up into the wiring harness. As a result, the wire connectors could become corroded and damaged.

The component involved in this recall is the dash side harness with multiple part numbers, including 24017-6MA0A, 24017-6MA0B, and 24017-6MA1A.  

Recall risks

Corroded electrical connectors can cause various features to malfunction, and in rare cases could cause a fire, endangering the occupants and upping the chance of a crash.  

Warning signs

Users may notice that the driver’s side power window or power seat has stopped working. They may also observe the AWD warning light come turn on or notice heat damage on the connector. Finally, the vehicle’s battery may run out.

Background of the recall

After the January 2022 recall, in which 688,946 2014-2016 Rogue SUVs were recalled over the same issue with the wiring harness, Nissan received a report from Transport Canada alleging the same problem in the 2017 model year. Between February and August 2022, Nissan conducted an investigation into the 2017 Nissan Rogue, culminating in the current recall.

The automaker received a total of nine complaints connected to Nissan harness connector corrosion, with no injuries or fires reported.    

Other Nissan recalls

Nissan issued a recall for 27,344 vehicles in November 2022, among them the 2021 and 2022 Rogue, over the rearview camera failing to display an image when Reverse gear is engaged.

An earlier recall in January 2022 involved 24,793 2021 Rogues and centered around defective fuel pumps that could cause the vehicle to stall while in motion.

The repair

Dealers will replace damaged connectors found after conducting an inspection on affected vehicles. Lithium grease will also be applied to the connectors to prevent corrosion resulting from liquid damage. 

Owners of affected vehicles will be notified on or around January 20, 2023.

Ford issues second recall for Bronco and Escape SUVs after multiple fires, injuries

Dearborn, MI – December 4, 2022 – Ford (NYSE:F), is recalling 521,778 SUVs that may develop a fuel leak, which may cause a fire inside the engine compartment.

This is the second recall for the same issue that follows on the heels of 54 complaints of under the hood fires and several injuries. Vehicles that were previously repaired will need to have the new remedy performed.

All recalled SUVs are equipped with a 1.5-liter turbocharged engine, with the following models being affected: 

  • 2021 – 2023 Ford Bronco Sport 
  • 2020 – 2023 Ford Escape

Recall summary  

The gasoline needed for the combustion process is delivered into the engine with fuel injectors. They act as valves, ensuring highly pressurized fuel is injected at the right moment. The timing is controlled by the engine control module, or ECM. 

In affected vehicles, the injector may crack, creating a fuel leak inside the engine compartment that may lead to a fire. The cause of the defect is currently under investigation.

Recall risks

Risks caused by vehicle fires are well-documented in many previous recalls, such as this one concerning RAM trucks. 

As for the present recall, at least four people have been injured leading up to this announcement. Ford is currently dealing with 43 legal claims stemming from the fires, according to the data provided by manufacturer to the U.S. auto safety regulator, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

Warning signs 

A fuel leak will most likely cause a strong gasoline odor, which may be noticeable  inside the cabin or from outside the vehicle. In addition, if escaping fuel catches fire, operators may observe smoke or flames coming from under the hood. 

Background of the recall

The problem was discovered as Ford investigated reports of fires occurring in the vehicles that previously received repairs thanks to a recall conducted back in the spring.

At least in some cases, the culprit of the fire was “likely” the defective injector.

Other Ford recalls

There was a Ford Bronco recall in late November due to malfunctioning rearview cameras, as reported.

There was a Ford Escape recall in May due to the risk of rollaway, also as reported.

In total, approximately 7.5 million Ford vehicles have been recalled over the past year, over various issues and safety-related defects. 

The repair

Dealers will update the vehicle’s control software, which will monitor the pressure within the fuel rail and detect if the injector cracks and leaks. Following the updater, a warning message will appear on the dashboard. 

In addition, a drain tube will be fitted within the engine bay, ensuring any escaping fuel does not come in contact with hot engine components. 

Notifications to vehicle owners will be sent between December 19, 2022 and December 23, 2022.

General Motors’ latest recalls affect more than 1.7 million cars

Washington, D.C. – December 3, 2022 – General Motors (NYSE: GM), which owns the Chevrolet, Buick, GMC and Cadillac brands, recalled over 1.7 million vehicles in nine different GM recalls in the past six months.

Some of the most prominent recalls are included below. Read on to find out if your vehicle is affected.

Daytime running lights that are always on  

In late November, GM recalled a large batch of SUVs because their daytime running lights would stay on even when they should not. This may potentially blind oncoming motorists, increasing the risk of an accident. More than 300,000 vehicles were affected by this recall, including:  

  • 2021 Cadillac Escalade
  • 2021 Cadillac Escalade ESV
  • 2021 Chevrolet Suburban
  • 2021 Cadillac Tahoe
  • 2021 GMC Yukon
  • 2021 GMC Yukon XL

In-your-face hoods 

In September, GM recalled approximately 120,000 city cars because their hood latches may corrode. If this happens, the hood may open while driving, obstructing the driver’s field of view and increasing the risk of an injury. The following cars were affected by this recall:  

  • 2013 – 2015 Chevrolet Spark
  • 2014 – 2015 Chevrolet Spark EV

Seat and seat belt issues 

Seat belts that may detach during a crash, increasing the risk of an injury, were the cause of a GM recall that took place in August 2022. In total, almost half a million SUVs were affected by this issue, including:   

  • 2021 – 2022 Cadillac Escalade 
  • 2021 – 2022 Cadillac Escalade ESV
  • 2021 – 2022 Chevrolet Suburban  
  • 2021 – 2022 Chevrolet Tahoe 
  • 2021 – 2022 GMC Yukon
  • 2021 – 2022 GMC Yukon XL

More recently, in October, approximately 7,000 cars were recalled because the driver’s seat belt potentially not being able to restrain the occupant in the event of a crash. The following models were affected by this issue: 

  • 2022 – 2023 Chevrolet Equinox
  • 2022 GMC Terrain

Defective brake boosters 

In July, there was a Buick recall for over 20,000 cars because their brake boosters could fail to engage. This would prolong the stopping distance, upping the risk of a crash. 

Windscreen wipers falling apart

Back in April 2022, GM recalled a large number of their SUVs because their windshield wipers could detach, which would reduce visibility and increase the risk of a crash and injury. Almost 700,000 cars were affected by this recall, including: 

  • 2014 – 2015 Chevrolet Equinox
  • 2014 – 2015 GMC Terrain

Honda recalls pickup trucks over faulty rearview cameras

Torrance, CA – December 2, 2022 – Honda (NYSE:HMC) is recalling 117,445 2017 – 2019 Honda Ridgeline pickup trucks whose rearview cameras may fail to display an image, increasing the risk of a crash and injury. 

This recall comes on the back of a U.S. government investigation. Honda reports that there have been 3,437 warranty claims related to this rearview camera issue as of November 17, 2022.

Recall summary

Opening and closing the tailgate may lead to fatigue or breakage of the rearview camera’s tailgate wire harness, which protects and guides the wires. This can cause the rearview camera not to transmit an image to the screen as it should. The cause of the recall is an out-of-specification tailgate wire harness, with part number 32109-T6Z-A000.

Recall risks

An inoperative rearview camera can reduce the driver’s ability to see behind the vehicle when backing up, increasing the risk of a crash and injury. 

Background of the recall

This recall comes after an investigation was launched by the U.S. government in February 2022. At the time, there had been 42 complaints and 10 reports of “severe damage to the tailgate wire harness” from regular opening and closing of the tailgate.

Other recent Honda recalls and investigations

There was another Honda Ridgeline recall in July, when 112,060 vehicles from “salt belt” states were recalled over a risk of fuel leaks.

Prior to that, in June, the U.S. government launched an investigation into Honda over engines that may fail to start after being shut down. The investigation could lead to a recall of nearly 200,000 2016-2020 Honda Pilot SUVs.

The repair

To remedy the issue, owners will be able to take their vehicles to a Honda dealer for a replacement of the rearview camera tailgate harness. Owners can expect to be notified about the repair program on or around January 16, 2023.
