Kia recalls more than 440,000 vehicles over risk of fire

Irvine, CA – June 11, 2021 – Kia (OTCMKTS:KIMTF) is recalling 440,370 cars for a possible brake fluid leak, which may result in a short circuit and  cause a fire. This increases the risk of a crash and injury. The affected component is the hydraulic electronic control unit (HECU), with several part numbers that start with 58920.

The recall supersedes a 2020 recall that encompassed the same model years and is a result of an ongoing investigation that has so far resulted in seven recalls.

This Kia recall includes the following sedans and SUVs:

  • 2013 Kia Optima
  • 2014 Kia Optima
  • 2015 Kia Optima
  • 2014 Kia Sorento
  • 2015 Kia Sorento

Recall summary

The anti-lock brake system, or ABS, is a safety system that adjusts the braking force to each wheel, to “prevent them from locking up when braking.” This gives the driver better control over the vehicle when having to stop quickly, especially in less-than-ideal road conditions. As a result of a supplier error, brake fluid may leak into the HECU, which is part of the ABS module, and cause the electronic circuitry inside it to short out, which may result in an engine fire.

The fire may occur “while parked or driving,” according to Kia.

Previous recall

This recall supersedes the previous recall that was conducted in 2020 for the same model years because of an enhanced remedy that was developed by Kia subsequent to the start of the previous recall.

It is also a result of an ongoing investigation launched in 2019 by auto safety regulator, the National Highway Safety Administration, into “non-collision related fires on model year…2011-2014 Kia Optima and Sorento, and Hyundai Sonata and Santa Fe vehicles,” which now also includes the 2011-2015 Kia Soul cars.

The investigation has so far resulted in seven recalls, including the December for almost 300,000 Kia vehicles that may catch fire.

Warning signs

The driver may be alerted to the electrical short by the malfunction indicator light (MIL) or the ABS warning light.  Other warning signs include a burning smell and smoke coming from underneath the hood.

Risks

A fire that occurs while driving is a serious safety concern with a wide range of potential hazards. Besides increasing the risk of collision and posing a threat to other drivers, it may not be possible to stop and evacuate the vehicle in time, which may result in injury or death. There is also a risk of property damage, as the burning vehicle may damage surrounding structures and vehicles.

Safety tips

Until the vehicle is repaired, it is important to park it outside, away from other vehicles and structures. This will prevent additional property damage in the event of fire when the vehicle is stationary.

In case a fire breaks out while driving, the driver and all occupants should follow these steps to get themselves to safety quickly.

Other 2015 Kia Optima recalls

Apart from this recall, the 2015 Kia Optima and 2015 Kia Sorento were among the cars recalled in December 2018 due to fire risk because of a fuel leak. The cars involved in that recall previously received a new engine.

Other 2015 Kia Sorento recalls

Please see above.

The repair

As a part of the repair, dealers will inspect the ABS module and replace it with an updated unit if a brake fluid leak is discovered. As an additional safety measure, dealers will replace the ABS fuse with one that is rated at a lower amperage, which will reduce the risk of fire in case of an electric short. The repair is free and the recall is expected to begin on  July 2.

This limits visibility for the driver, increasing the risk of an accident and injury.  The recall includes 48 model years, including Mercedes Benz GLS vehicles.  The 2019 Mercedes Benz GLE Class cars are not part of the recall.

The recall includes:

●  2020 – 2021 Mercedes-Benz AMG CLA35

  2020 – 2021 Mercedes-Benz AMG CLA45

  2020 – 2021 Mercedes-Benz GLE350

  2020 – 2021 Mercedes-Benz GLE450

  2020 – 2021 Mercedes-Benz GLE580

  2020-2021 Mercedes-Benz GLS450

  2020-2021 Mercedes-Benz GLS580

  2021 Mercedes-Benz Maybach GLS600

Please see the full list here.

Recall summary

Due to a software issue, the rearview camera in the recalled vehicles may reboot while reversing or show a blank image.

Risks

Without the video feed from a rear camera, the driver will have limited visibility while backing up. This can lead to property damage or injury. The risk is even greater if the driver relies solely on the backup camera when going in reverse.

Other Mercedes-Benz recalls

This is not the first time Mercedes-Benz has an issue with their rearview cameras. In the beginning of last year, the 2019 Mercedes Benz A class vehicles were subject to a similar recall due to a software glitch.

The repair

The fix is a software update that will be done for free.  The recall will start on July 13.

Hyundai recalls more than 150,000 SUVs over risk of fire

Fountain Valley, CA – May 19, 2021 – Hyundai  (NASDAQ:HYMTF) is recalling 151,205 vehicles because of a short circuit risk within the anti-lock brake (ABS) system. The short circuit may result in a fire, increasing the risk of death and injury for the occupants of the vehicle.

The affected component is the ABS module, with part numbers that start with 58920. The recall includes certain 2013-2015 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport SUVs.

Recall summary

The ABS is a safety system that prevents wheels from locking up during braking, which gives the driver better control over the vehicle.  Due to a supplier error, a brake fluid leak can occur within the ABS, which can cause the unit to short circuit and lead to an engine fire.

This may happen both when the vehicle is parked or while it is in motion.

Warning signs

The illumination of either the malfunction indicator light (MIL) or the ABS warning light can alert the driver to the electrical short within the unit. In the event of a fire, the driver may smell something burning or see the smoke coming from underneath the hood.

Risks

A fire can be a serious safety concern if it happens while driving. Potential hazards range from failure to stop and evacuate the vehicle in time to being a threat to other drivers and their passengers. In addition, a burning vehicle may damage surrounding structures and vehicles.

Safety tips

For safety tips – including where to park your vehicle before it is repaired, please see this recent Kia Sportage and Cadenza recall article.

Other Hyundai ABS recalls

This recall is a part of ongoing fire-related issues that both Kia and Hyundai vehicles are suffering from. Recently, Hyundai recalled nearly 180,000 Tucson SUVs and almost 95,000 of certain Genesis models over the similar fire risk caused by faulty ABS components.  Kia – which is part-owned by Hyundai and builds vehicles on its platform – recalled over 300,000 cars because of a risk of a fire inside the engine compartment caused by a defective ABS module

Separately, the 2013 Hyundai Santa Fe was among cars recalled in 2018 for a fuel leak that could lead to a fire.

The repair

To fix the issue, dealers will replace the ABS fuse with one that is less prone to shorting or potentially replace the whole ABS module. The repair is free and the recall is expected to begin on June 25.

Kia recalls SUVs over stall and fire risk

Irvine, CA – May 4, 2021 – Kia Motors (OTCMKTS:KIMTF) is recalling 147,249 vehicles equipped with 2.0L Nu MPI engines, which may stall or catch fire while driving as a result of internal damage. This increases risk of a crash and may result in serious injuries to vehicle occupants.  This Kia vehicle recall includes the following vehicles:

  • 2021 Kia  Seltos
  • 2020 Kia Soul
  • 2021 Kia Soul

The component in question is called “piston assembly,” part number 23041-2E801. This is the latest in the series of ongoing fire-related Kia and Hyundai recalls.

Recall summary

The engines of these cars contain piston oil rings, whose function is to seal the combustion chamber  – where gasoline and air mix  – from other parts of the engine, partly to ensure that no extra oil is passed into the chamber.

Due to a supplier error,  the recalled vehicles’ piston oil rings were “improperly heated” during production.  As a result of this, they may become excessively hard to the point where they start chipping. This may result in the seal between the other parts of the engine and the combustion chamber breaking, which may cause extra oil to get into the engine and damage it.

The damage may cause the car to stall while driving. If the car continues to be driven, parts of the piston assembly can break apart and pierce the engine. This may result in the vehicle catching fire as oil escaping from the engine comes in contact with the “hot exhaust components.

Warning signs

The driver may be alerted to this problem if they hear the engine make a metallic rattling sound and feel it vibrate. In most cases, this will be accompanied by an illuminated “ oil pressure warning light” on the dashboard. To prevent any further damage, the driver should stop the vehicle in the first safe spot and turn off the engine.

Risks

Stalling while driving may lead to potentially dangerous situations, especially if it happens in high-speed or dense traffic. Car fires are very dangerous and kill over 300 people a year on average,  as reported.

For tips on what to do if your car catches fire, please see this article about last year’s Kia Stinger recall for mystery fire risk.

Other Kia engine recalls

Both Kia and Hyundai have been subject to multiple fire-related recalls. Recently, the latter – which is part-owned by Hyundai and builds vehicles on its platform – recalled over 300,000 Kia Cadenza and Kia Sportage cars because of fire risk related to a part within the anti-lock brake system (ABS). Faulty engine rod bearings were the culprit behind a recent Hyundai recall due to the stall and fire risk.

Seltos Kia 2021 is not subject to any additional recalls.

The repair

To fix the issue, Kia Motors dealers will conduct a special engine examination in affected vehicles . If an oil ring flaw is found, the dealer will replace the whole engine. In certain cases, the dealer might also install software that will alert the driver that the piston oil ring is damaged.

The recall is slated to begin on June 11.

Daimler recalls GLB-class SUVs over risk of fly-away spoilers

Jacksonville, FL – April 23, 2021 – Daimler AG (NASDAQ:DDAIF), which owns the Mercedes-Benz brand, is recalling 5,215 compact SUVs that have tailgate spoilers that may detach while driving. The resulting road hazard could increase the risk of a crash or injury for surrounding motorists.

This recall includes the following GLB-class SUVs:

  • 2021 GLB35 AMG
  • 2020 GLB250
  • 2021 GLB250

Recall summary

The recalled cars have side tailgate spoilers, which are pieces of external trim made out of plastic. Their main purpose is to improve the appearance of these cars by giving them a slicker look. The spoilers were mounted incorrectly and may detach from the vehicle while traveling at a high speed.

Risks

Spoilers that detach while moving may hit other vehicles, injuring its occupants or causing an accident.  Even if this does not happen, it is very likely that they will land on the road and become an obstacle. This augments the chances of an accident or injury for other drivers, as it may force them to make quick maneuvers.

To read more about the dangers of road debris, please see this article about a recent Land Rover recall.

Other Mercedes-Benz recalls

In August 2020, more than 10,000 2020 Mercedes-Benz GLB250 SUVs were recalled because their rear spoilers were not fully attached to the car and might have detached from the car while driving.

The repair

To fix the issue, Mercedes-Benz dealers will check how the side spoilers are mounted to the car and replace them – together with a corresponding clip – if needed. The repair is free of charge. The recall begins on May 31.

Stellantis recalls Ram trucks that may catch fire

Auburn Hills, MI – April 26, 2022  – Chrysler has remedied issues with 12,919 vehicles including the 2021 RAM 2500 that was dealing with electrical issues caused by a short on a relay. Additionally, 193 of these models have been categorized as unreachable and 24 have been removed from the recall. All these 2021 Ram 2500 models with these electrical issues were remedied in three groups during 2021.

Auburn Hills, MI – April 8, 2021 – Stellantis (NYSE:STLA), which owns the Dodge brand, is recalling 19,214 vehicles with a faulty relay, or a switch, inside the engine compartment that may cause fire. This recall includes the following Ram pickup trucks :

  • 2021 Ram 2500
  • 2021 Ram 3500
  • 2021 Ram 4500
  • 2021 Ram 5500

Recall summary

The recalled cars are equipped with Cummings 6.7L diesel engines that have an electric heater that warms up the air coming into the engine and helps it reach running temperatures faster. The operation of this heater is controlled by a so-called solid state relay, which is an electric switch that turns electrical power on and off. This switch may be defective and can short circuit, which may lead to fire in the engine compartment.  This may occur regardless of whether the ignition is on or off.

The defect is caused by a supplier error.

Risks

A fire can be a serious safety concern if it happens while driving. Potential hazards range from failure to stop and evacuate the vehicle in time to increased risks of collision. In addition, a burning vehicle on the road is a threat to other drivers and their passengers.

Safety tips

Chrysler does not explicitly say this, but in the case of other recent recalls because of an increased fire risk, manufacturers like Hyundai have recommended to park recalled vehicles outside and away from structures, such as houses and garages.

For tips on what to do if your vehicle catches fire, please read this article about a Hyundai recall.

Other Chrysler recalls

In November, over 19,000 Ram 1500 and Ram 2500 pickup trucks were part of a recall due to the driver-side mirror issue, where the mirror glass detached from the backing plate and no longer showed a reflection of what was behind.

The repair

To fix the issue, dealers will install a protective barrier around the relay. If it short-circuits, the barrier will act as a thermoresistant capsule, which will contain the spread of heat and prevent the fire. The repairs are free of charge. The recall begins on April 30.

Mazda recalls 13,857 cars over faulty liftgate

Pleasanton, CA – March 29, 2021 – Mazda (OTCMKTS:MZDAY) is recalling 13,857 vehicles whose power liftgates may lower unexpectedly, increasing the risk of injury. A power liftgate is a motorized trunk lid that opens and closes electronically. The recall includes 2021 CX 30 Mazda SUVs, as well as the 2020 model year of the same car. The affected component is the power liftgate drive unit with part numbers DFR7 62 6EXB and DFR7 63 6EXB.

Recall summary

This recall affects these Mazda’s power liftgates, which allow drivers  to open and close the trunk with the touch of a button. The trunk lid can lower itself unexpectedly from a fully opened position. This will only happen  when the car is parked uphill facing the hill.

The defect is caused by a supplier error, as well as “high ambient temperatures.”

Risks

Although this defect is not supposed the liftgate to lower completely, there is still a risk of injury. This may happen when a person opens a liftgate and leans inside the trunk to gain access to stored objects. If the liftgate unexpectedly lowers during this period, he or she may hit it while standing back up.

Other Mazda recalls

In June of last year, over 12,000 Mazda CX 30 2020 were recalled due to a fire risk caused by a disconnected hose in the trunk

The repair

To fix the issue, Mazda dealers will update the liftgate software and check serial numbers on drive units. If the units are found to be defective, they will be replaced. The repair is free of charge. The recall begins on April 19.
