Daimler recalls Mercedes-Benz Metris vans over increased fire risk

Sandy Springs, GA – March 17, 2022 – Daimler (OTCMKTS:DMLRY), which owns the Mercedes-Benz brand, has issued a recall for 42,132 vehicles due to a fuel leak, which increases the possibility of a fire.

The recall covers the following vans:

  • 2017  Mercedes-Benz Metris 
  • 2018  Mercedes-Benz Metris 
  • 2019  Mercedes-Benz Metris 
  • 2020  Mercedes-Benz Metris
  • 2021  Mercedes-Benz Metris
  • 2022  Mercedes-Benz Metris 

Recall summary

The upper and lower lines connecting the fuel hose in the engine compartment on the recalled Mercedes-Benz Metris vans are attached incorrectly. This could result in fuel leaking from the vehicle’s underside during operation.    

The components involved in this recall are the fuel hose with part number N000000004158 and the click clamp with part number A0069971890.

Recall risks


Fuel leaking from an incorrectly secured hose can affect the vehicle’s normal operation and efficiency. More importantly, if the fuel leaks near an ignition or heat source within the engine, it could present a potential fire risk and increase the likelihood of bodily injury or property damage.   

Warning signs

The driver may perceive “fuel odor…in the interior compartment” even if the leak is minor.

Other Mercedes-Benz Metris recalls 

This is the fourth Mercedes-Benz Metris recall this year. Earlier this month, the manufacturer issued two recalls, one for a faulty rearview camera and another one for a brake fluid leak, which could result in decreased brake performance, as reported.

In January, Metris vans were among 48,800 vehicles recalled due to the risk of rollaway, also as reported.

The repair

Dealers will inspect the recalled vehicles’ upper and lower fuel hose connections and replace them, as well as hoses, if necessary.

Affected owners will be notified by April 11, 2022, and all repairs will be done free of charge.

Sandy Springs, GA – March 6, 2022 – Daimler (OTCMKTS:DMLRY), which owns the Mercedes-Benz brand, has issued a recall for 28,743 vehicles over improperly mounted brake reservoirs that can detach during use, affecting “braking performance” and increasing the risk of a crash.

The recall covers the following vans:

  • 2016 Mercedes-Benz Metris
  • 2017 Mercedes-Benz Metris
  • 2018 Mercedes-Benz Metris
  • 2019 Mercedes-Benz Metris
  • 2020 Mercedes-Benz Metris
  • 2021 Mercedes-Benz Metris

Recall summary

Brake fluid is a necessary component of a vehicle’s braking system, providing the force that allows the brakes to engage when the brake pedal is pressed by the driver. This fluid is stored in a reservoir tank located in the engine bay.

The reservoir for the 2016 Mercedes-Benz brake fluid is mounted improperly on recalled vehicles. This can cause the component to detach during operation, potentially compromising the vehicle’s capability to provide adequate and timely braking force. 

The component involved in this recall is the Expansion Rivet, with part number A2019900192.  

Recall risks

Decreased braking performance increases possibility of a crash.

Warning signs

The driver may become aware of the issue if he or she sees the “brake warning lamp” come on in the instrument panel or feels a “a gradual softening of brake pedal resistance.”

Over 17,000 vans were just recalled due to a faulty rearview camera that could cause the image to freeze, increasing the risk of a crash while backing up, as reported. 

The repair

Dealers will make sure that the reservoir is attached as a way of addressing Mercedes brake issues. Affected owners will be notified by mail by March 28, 2022.  All inspections and repairs will be conducted free of charge.

Sandy Springs, GA – March 5, 2022 – Daimler (OTCMKTS:DMLRY), which owns the Mercedes-Benz brand, has issued a recall for 17,093 vehicles over a defect in the rearview camera which can cause the images shown on the rearview display to freeze.  This defect increases the risk of an accident.

The recall covers the following vans:

  • 2017  Mercedes-Benz Metris 
  • 2018  Mercedes-Benz Metris 

Recall summary

This Mercedes rearview camera issues’ recall is caused by a hardware defect involving the memory chip on the rearview camera. This may cause the images shown on the rearview display to freeze, compromising visibility to the rear of the vehicle.  

The component involved in this recall is the rearview camera with multiple part numbers, including  A4479052502 and A4479054603.

Other Mercedes-Benz Metris recalls 

The Mercedes-Benz Metris was first recalled in 2016 over an issue also related to limited rearward visibility, when an advisory was issued over inadequate visibility of the front passenger side mirror.

More recently, a recall for the Mercedes-Benz Metris was issued in February 2022 over an improperly mounted brake fluid reservoir. This component can potentially detach and leak brake fluid during operation, compromising the vehicle’s ability to safely come to a stop and leading to an increased risk of a crash. 

The repair

Dealers will replace the rearview camera on recalled vehicles. As a stop-gap measure in case of insufficient spare parts, dealers will update the camera software to reduce the probability of failure. The update will result in a “black screen” instead of freezing the image in case a failure occurs, to further reduce the safety risk.

Affected owners will be notified by March 21, 2022.

Bologna, Italy – February 27, 2022 – Lamborghini (OTCMKTS:VWAGY)  has issued a recall for 4,796 vehicles over the possibility that their headlights can be “improperly adjusted.” This would compromise visibility, preventing drivers from being able to see upcoming hazards in low-light conditions and increasing the risk of a crash.

The recall covers 2015-2020 Lamborghini Huracan sport cars.

Recall summary

Headlights are part of a vehicle’s standard safety features, providing forward illumination when driving at night or in low-light conditions. The covers preventing the driver from adjusting the headlights manually are missing in the recalled vehicles “due to a human error.”

This could potentially result in headlights incorrectly aligned.

The component involved in this recall is the “beam horizontal screw adjustment blanking cap,” with part number 7PP941041.   

Recall risks

Improperly aligned Lamborghini Huracan headlights may direct the light beam pattern directly into the line of sight of oncoming drivers, resulting in glare. This reduces visibility and increases the risk of a crash, resulting in bodily injury and property damage for the driver and other motorists.  

Other Lamborghini recalls 

This is the second recall issued for the Lamborghini Huracan, with a January 2021 recall involving the rear camera’s failure to display images in temperatures below 41 degrees Fahrenheit.

The repair

Lamborghini dealers will install the covers – called blanking caps – on affected models to ensure the proper alignment of headlights. The repairs will be done free of charge. Affected owners will be notified by April 8, 2022.

Stellantis recalls Pacifica Hybrids over fire hazard

Auburn Hills, MI – February 19, 2022 – Stellantis (NYSE:STLA) – which owns Chrysler brand – has issued a recall for 16,741 vehicles over a risk of fire which may occur even if the car is parked and turned off. A fire greatly increases the risk of an injury. 

The recall covers the following minivans:

  • 2017 Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid Plug-in electric vehicle (PHEV)
  • 2018 Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid Plug-in electric vehicle (PHEV)

Recall summary

Due to reasons that are currently being investigated, the recalled vehicles may suddenly burst into flames even when parked and with the ignition turned off. 

The recall comes on the heels of “five customer records and 12 field reports” of Pacifica PHEVs spontaneously combusting.

‘The vehicle exploded into a fireball’

One driver’s complaint described his or her family’s horrifying experience which happened while the car was driven by the person’s wife with five children inside. The wife noticed “smoke coming from under the hood.”  Within “seconds”  of continuing on, smoke turned into flames. She pulled over and barely got her kids out before the “vehicle exploded into a fireball.”  

Recall risks

A fire may damage nearby structures and vehicles. It also puts the life of the car occupants at risk.

Fortunately, there have been no reports of victims so far. 

Other Chrysler Pacifica recalls 

Chrysler Pacifica PHEV minivans were involved in at least two other fire-related recalls in the last couple of years.

Over 10,000 units of the 2017-2018 model-years were recalled in October 2018 partially because of a fire hazard caused by improperly starting the engine. In June 2020, the 2017-2020 model-years were recalled due to the risk of fire due to a faulty connector post behind the driver’s seat.

Safety tips

While the repair for these Chrysler Pacifica fire incidents is being worked on, owners are advised not to recharge their vehicles and to park them a safe distance away from structures and other vehicles. The repair

Tesla recalls four models over faulty seat belt chime

Austin, TX – February 12, 2022 – Tesla (NASDAQ:TSLA) has issued a recall for 817,143 vehicles across four models over a defective seat belt chime. The absence of an audible reminder to wear the seat belt may cause the driver to operate the vehicle without it, increasing the risk of injury in a crash. 

The recall covers the following models:

  • 2021-2022 Tesla Model S
  • 2021-2022 Tesla Model X
  • 2017-2022 Tesla Model 3
  • 2020-2022 Tesla Model Y

Recall summary

The vehicles have a seat belt chime that activates when the vehicle is started, reminding the driver to fasten the seat belt. This works together with a visual seat belt reminder that can be seen on the vehicle’s dashboard.

If the chime is interrupted when the vehicle was previously used while the seat belt was not fastened, a software error will prevent the chime from sounding off the next time the vehicle is used.  This will happen if, for example, the driver left the vehicle while the chime was still going off with the engine running and then returned.

Recall risks

Drivers may not fasten their seat belts, which augments the risk of an injury in a crash.

While the chime will go off at speeds over 13.7 miles per hour (mph), this may not give the driver enough time to fasten the belt before an accident occurs.

Other Tesla recalls 

The latest Tesla seat belt recall is the electric vehicle maker’s fourth, barely two months into 2022. There was a Tesla Model 3 recall  spanning more than 356,000 vehicles in early January over faulty rearview cameras. This was followed by a Tesla Model S recall involving over 119,000 units for hoods that may open while the vehicle is traveling, obscuring the driver’s view.

The third advisory concerned over 53,000 Tesla vehicles over a “rolling stop” feature that allowed them to go through a stop sign without halting completely, presenting a higher risk of collision with other road users.   

In addition to the recalls, the automaker is subject to two investigations, including one for potentially allowing drivers to play video games on the front console while on the road.

The repair

Tesla already released new firmware to correct the software error, enabling the chime to go off. The firmware update was deployed over-the-air (OTA) to the affected vehicles in late January and early February.

Owners will also receive letters with more information on April 1, 2022.

Kia recalls five models over defective airbags

Irvine, CA – February 5, 2022 – Kia (OTCMKTS:KIMTF) is recalling 410,619 units spanning various models over faulty airbags that may fail to inflate in case of a crash, putting the occupants of the car at the risk of injury.

The Kia airbag recall involves the following models:

  • 2017 – 2019 Kia Soul
  • 2017 – 2019 Kia Sedona
  • 2017 – 2019 Kia Soul EV
  • 2017 – 2018 Kia Forte
  • 2017 Kia Forte Koup

Recall summary

These models use airbags that cushion occupants’ heads and prevent them from hitting the vehicle’s interior during a crash. The airbags are regulated by a computer called the airbag control unit (ACU), which is protected by a cover.

Manufacturing defects can cause this cover to make contact with – and possibly damage – the electronics responsible for controlling the airbags. When this happens, the airbags may become deactivated and not work in the event of a crash.

The component involved in this recall is the “Airbag Module Assembly” with multiple part numbers, including 95910-B2050 and 95910-B2600.

Recall risks

Faulty airbags  expose the vehicle’s occupants to a higher risk of serious injury during a crash.

Warning signs

If the airbags are deactivated, the airbag warning light will come on the dashboard.

Other Kia recalls 

There was a Kia Forte recall in September because of faulty trunk latches, which in rare cases if someone is stuck inside may prevent that person from opening the trunk.

In addition to that, earlier model-years of the same car – as well as close to 3 million of other Hyundai and Kia cars – are being investigated to see if the manufacturers will be required to issue new recalls for these cars based on an increased risk of fire. Kia and Hyundai have been in the crosshairs of the U.S. auto safety regulator for the past couple of years because of their vehicles catching fire, sometimes for unknown reasons, as reported.

The repair

If the airbag warning light is on, the ACU will be replaced with an improved one. If the ABWL is not on, an update to the airbag’s software will be installed. Both measures will ensure that the airbags inflate during a crash to protect occupants.

All repairs will be done free of charge and owners who already paid out of pocket will be reimbursed. Notifications with more information will be sent March 21 and March 25, 2022.

Ford recalls Mustang Mach-E and Maverick over ‘improperly attached’ seat belts

Dearborn, MI – January 7, 2022 – Ford (NYSE:F) is recalling 2,622 vehicles over faulty seat belts that may fail to protect passengers in a crash, putting them at a higher risk of injuries in a crash.

This Ford seat belt recall centers on the following vehicles:

  • 2021 Mustang Mach-E
  • 2021 Mustang Mach-E
  • 2022 Maverick

Recall summary

The rear seat belt buckles of the recalled vehicles are not attached to the rear floor assembly in the right way. This means that the seat belt can detach under load and fail to properly protect the passenger in the event of a crash.

The component involved in this recall is the “Rear Floor Assembly” with part numbers NZ6B-E11215-A/C/D and LJ9B-R11215-AN.

Other Ford recalls 

This follows the recent recall issued for 2022 Ford Maverick units over an issue with the fuel tank, which may have been pierced by drilling holes during installation of a bed liner. Any damage or puncture to the fuel tank may result in a fuel leak, which increases the risk of fire or environmental pollution, apart from compromising the vehicle’s performance.  

Meanwhile, the last Ford Mustang recall was issued in October of last year over detaching windshields. The front glass on more than 17,600 Mustang Mach-E units was not properly glued in place, presenting a safety hazard for occupants. 

The repair

Dealers will inspect and repair the seat belt buckle attachments free of charge. Owners of affected units will be notified by mail between January 17 and January 22, 2022.
