Toyota recalls Tundra vehicles with defective rearview systems

Plano, TX – July 30, 2022 – Toyota (NYSE:TM) is recalling 31,428 vehicles with a defective rear camera system. The monitor may show the front view instead of the rear view when the vehicle is in reverse. This increases the risk of a crash.

The vehicles included in this Toyota rearview camera recall include:

  • 2022 Toyota Tundra
  • 2022 Toyota Tundra Hybrid

Recall summary

The subject vehicles are equipped with a Panoramic View Monitoring (PVM) system, which is made up of cameras located around the vehicle. The PVM works in conjunction with the parking assist electronic control unit (ECU), which is a computer that tells the monitor which view to display. 

Due to a programming error, under certain circumstances the monitor may display the front camera image instead of the rear camera image when the car is in reverse.

The component in question is the parking assist ECU, with part numbers 86792-0C051 and 86792-0C052.

Recall risks

Failure of the monitor to display the correct rearview camera image can prevent the driver from seeing obstacles behind the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash.

Other recent Toyota recalls

The current recall is one of several Toyota Tundra recalls this year, and the second involving the rearview camera.

In May, nearly 20,000 Tundra pickup trucks were recalled over failure to show the video feed on the dashboard monitor. This problem was attributed to a Toyota software issue.

In early July, the 2022 Toyota Tundra and Toyota Tundra Hybrid vehicles were recalled over stability concerns caused by the powertrain detaching from its housing.

Other Toyota models have also been subject to recent recalls. Earlier in May, Toyota issued a recall over reduced stability affecting 17 models. Nearly half a million vehicles were included in the recall due to stability control that could fail to automatically turn back on when the vehicle is restarted.

Repair

To address the issue, owners can take their vehicles to a Toyota dealer for a free reprogramming of the parking assist ECU. 

Owners will be notified about the repair program between July 27, 2022 and August 17, 2022.

BMW recalls vehicles with faulty display

Westwood, NJ – July 23, 2022 – BMW (OTCMKTS:BMWYY) is recalling 6,930 vehicles whose display does not show critical safety information while being parked by a valet. This increases the risk of a crash.

The following vehicles are included in this recall:

  • 2022 – 2023 BMW iX xDrive40
  • 2022 – 2023 BMW iX xDrive50
  • 2022 – 2023 BMW iX M60
  • 2022 BMW i4 eDrive40
  • 2022 BMW i4 M50

Recall summary

The affected vehicles are those equipped with a BMW hybrid electric powertrain and have a central information display (CID) that shows important safety information. The recalled vehicles’ CID may fail to show safety warnings when in valet parking mode due to a software error.

Valet parking mode is a setting that protects the main driver’s private information and can lock the tailgate when someone else is driving, such as when a valet is parking the vehicle.

Recall risks

If the driver cannot see warning lights or messages that should appear on the display, the risk of a crash increases.

Other recent BMW recalls

In March, nearly one million 2007 – 2010 BMW X5 SAV vehicles were recalled over engine fire risk.

There are no BMW i4 recall aside from this one at the moment.

There was a BMW hybrid recall in September of last year due to a brake assist issue. The recall included non-hybrid cars as well, as reported.

Repair

To remedy the BMW center display issue, owners will be asked to take their vehicles to a dealer to have the head unit software reprogrammed at no cost. 

Owners can expect to receive further communication from BMW regarding the repair program around August 29, 2022.

Daimler recalls Mercedes-Benz Metris vans over tire failure risk

Sandy Springs, GA – July 17, 2022 – Daimler (OTCMKTS:DMLRY), which owns the Mercedes-Benz brand, is recalling 24,403 vehicles whose maximum load rating was calculated incorrectly. Loading the vehicle up to the posted maximum may cause excessive wear on the tires as well as potential “tire failure,” increasing the risk of a crash. 

This recall includes the 2016 – 2018 Mercedes-Benz Metris vans.

Recall summary

The vehicles were given a maximum load rating that was slightly higher than allowed due to “an oversight.” This means that owners could unknowingly overload the vehicle.

Recall risks

An overloaded vehicle may cause excessive tire wear and lead to tire failure, increasing the risk of a crash.

Warning signs

In the event of a loss of tire pressure, drivers will be alerted by the TPMS (Tire Pressure Monitoring System) warning signal on the instrument cluster and should be able to take “appropriate mitigation measures.”

Other recent Daimler recalls

Other Mercedes-Benz van recalls include one in May involving Metris vans that are unable to dial emergency services. This puts vehicle occupants at risk of not getting the necessary help in time in case of an injury or crash.

In the same month, a stop-drive notice was issued for Mercedes-Benz R-Class, ML-Class, and GL-Class vehicles. A defective braking system could  increase the risk of a crash.

Among earlier Mercedes-Benz Metris recalls was one issued in March: 2016–2021 vans were recalled over decreased braking performance, due to a manufacturing error.

Repair

Daimler has not yet announced a remedy for this recall. Vehicle owners can expect to receive further communication by July 25, 2022.

Toyota recalls Tundra vehicles over stability concerns

Plano, TX – July 10, 2022 – Toyota (NYSE:TM) is recalling 46,176 trucks over part of the vehicles’ powertrain detaching from its housing, making the vehicles harder to handle and increasing the risk of a crash.

This recall includes the following vehicles:

  • 2022 Toyota Tundra
  • 2022 Toyota Tundra Hybrid

Recall summary

A vehicle’s powertrain propels it forward and consists of axles – which are shafts that transfer rotational power from the vehicle’s transmission to its wheels – as well as the engine and the transmission.

The nuts holding together parts of the Toyota Tundra axle shaft assembly may have been improperly tightened during assembly and may loosen further over time. When this happens, parts of the axle shaft may detach from their housing

The components in question are the left and right axle shaft subassemblies, with part numbers 47870-0C020 and 47880-0C020.

Recall risks

Detached axle shaft components can cause the loss of vehicle stability and brake performance, increasing the risk of a crash.

Warning signs

If your vehicle is faulty, you may “experience vibration, hear an abnormal noise, and/or observe leaking of differential oil,” according to Toyota. 

Other recent Toyota recalls

One of the most recent Toyota truck recalls was in May. The manufacturer recalled nearly 20,000 2022 Tundra pickup trucks over a problem with the rearview camera that was attributed to a software error.

Earlier in May, Toyota issued another stability-related recall, which affected 17 models. Nearly half a million vehicles’ stability control could fail to automatically turn back on after the vehicle was restarted.

One of the more recent Toyota Tundra recalls included the 2021 Toyota Tundra. The vehicles were recalled in December 2021 over a leak in the steering wheel, increasing the risk of a crash and injury.

Repair

Owners can take their vehicles to a Toyota dealer for a rear axle inspection and retightening of the axle nuts. Any axle-related components that may have been damaged because of this recall issue will be replaced. There will be no cost to the owner.

Owners should expect to receive information regarding the repair program between July 15, 2022 and July 29, 2022.

Honda issues ‘Salt Belt’ recall over risk of fuel leak

Torrance, CA – July 07, 2022 – Honda (NYSE:HMC) is recalling 112,060 vehicles over a potential fuel leak and increased risk of fire.

This recall includes 2006 – 2014 Honda Ridgeline pickup trucks and affects only those sold or registered in “salt belt” states.

Recall summary

On the underside of the truck, straps attach the fuel tank to part of the vehicle’s frame called a “crossmember.”

In states where salt is used to de-ice roadways, salt and dirt may build up underneath the vehicle. This buildup may corrode the crossmember, eventually causing the fuel tank to detach.

An improperly secured fuel tank may come into contact with the ground, causing damage to the tank and possible fuel leaks.

The component in question is the crossmember (component C: floor middle), with part number 65730-SJC-A00.

Recall risks

Since fuel is flammable, a leaking fuel tank increases the risk of a fire, which could cause injuries and property damage.

Drivers may hear noise from the Honda Ridgeline fuel tank or its straps dragging on the ground.

Other recent Honda recalls and investigations

In February, the U.S. government launched an investigation into defective rearview cameras on the 2017 Honda Ridgeline. The inability to show an image when reversing increases the risk of a crash and injury.

In December 2021, there was a Honda SUV and pickup truck recall that affected more than 700,000 vehicles. This was over hoods that may fly open while the car is in motion and block the driver’s view. Included in the recall were the 2017 – 2020 Honda Ridgeline vehicles. 

Prior to that, in early December, there was a 2021 Honda Ridgeline recall over a child seat safety concern, as reported.

Repair

To remedy the issue, Honda dealers will conduct an inspection of the rear frame. Depending on the extent of the damage, they will attach reinforcements, repair the corroded frame or offer to repurchase the vehicle. Repairs will be completed at no cost to the owner.

Owners can expect to receive information regarding the repair program by August 1, 2022.

Ford recalls vehicles over instrument panel malfunction

Dearborn, MI – June 25, 2022 – Ford (NYSE:F) is recalling 30,244 vehicles whose instrument panel displays may fail to light up. The driver may not be able to see the various gauges and warning lights,  increasing the risk of a crash. 

This recall includes the 2022 Ford Transit vehicles.

The components in question are the 4.2” monochromatic cluster and its software, with part numbers NK4T-10849-B and NK4T-14C026-B.

Recall summary

The instrument panel cluster of the subject vehicles may not light up as expected at startup.

The cause of the malfunction is still unknown.

Recall risks

Failure to illuminate the cluster display could render safety-related telltales and gauges unreadable, increasing the risk of a crash.

Other recent Ford Transit recalls

Earlier this month, the same model was among those recalled over missing tire label information, which could lead to improper tire inflation or incorrect tires and rims.

Prior to that, in April, the 2016 and 2020 Ford Transit Connect vehicles were recalled due to a supplier error leading to front windshields that may detach.

In another notable Ford van recall in September 2021, Transits and Transit Connects were reported to have faulty child restraint systems.

Repair

To remedy the issue, Ford or Lincoln dealers will update the instrument panel cluster software at no cost to car owners. 

Owners should expect to receive information regarding the repair program between July 25, 2022 and July 29, 2022.

Ford recalls vehicles over missing tire information

Dearborn, MI – June 18, 2022 – Ford (NYSE:F) is recalling 5,247 vehicles whose labels are missing tire information. This could lead to improper tire inflation or the use of incorrect tires or rims, increasing the risk of a crash and injury.

The recall includes the following models:

  • 2022 Ford F-250 Super Duty
  • 2022 Ford F-350 Super Duty
  • 2022 Ford F-450 Super Duty
  • 2022 Ford F-550 Super Duty
  • 2022 Ford F-600 Super Duty
  • 2023 Ford E-Series
  • 2022 Ford Transit 

Also included in this recall is a small number of the following:

  • 2017 Ford Super Duty F-450
  • 2019 Ford Super Duty F-450
  • 2021 Ford Super Duty F-350
  • 2021 Ford Transit 

The component in question is the safety certification label, with part number 5U5A-3520472-AA.

Recall summary

The subject vehicles received safety certification labels with missing information pertaining to the tire size, rim type and recommended tire pressure for the front and rear wheels. The issue has been attributed to a supplier error. 

Recall risks

Missing tire information could lead to an incorrect tire or rim being installed or incorrect tire pressure. This increases the risk of a crash.

Other recent Ford truck recalls

This is not the first recall that the F-250, F-350, F-450 and F-550 Super Duty vehicles have been subjected to in recent months. In May, the 2020 models were recalled due to an increased risk of rollaway

Also in same month, the 2022 F-150 trucks were recalled over airbags that may fail to deploy. 

In early 2021, Ford had a similar issue with incorrect tire information on labels. That Ford tire recall included nearly 10,000 F-350 trucks. 

Repair

Ford and Lincoln dealers will replace the safety certification labels at no cost. Owners will be notified of the repair program between June 27, 2022 and July 01, 2022.

Hyundai issues another recall over seat belt pretensioners that may explode

Fountain Valley, CA – May 28, 2022 – Hyundai (OTCMKTS:HYMTF) is recalling 239,000 vehicles whose seat belt pretensioners – which are part of a mechanism that tightens the seat belt during a crash – may be defective. This increases the risk of injury to the driver and passengers. 

The recall includes the following models:

  • 2019 – 2022 Hyundai Accent
  • 2021 – 2023 Hyundai Elantra
  • 2021 – 2022 Hyundai Elantra HEV 

Recall summary

Seat belt pretensioners help lock the seat belt in case of a collision. The vehicles in question have pyrotechnic pretensioners that are designed to deploy quickly and forcefully. In the affected vehicles, however, the pretensioners are at risk of exploding when deployed for unknown reasons.

The components involved are the seat belt assembly with pretensioner for the driver’s and passenger’s sides, with part numbers 88810-J0600, 88820-J0600, 88810-AA500 and 88820-AA500.

Recall risks

If the pretensioner explodes, it could send metal fragments into the vehicle,  striking occupants and resulting in an injury.

Other recent Hyundai recalls

This is not the first pretensioner-related Hyundai seat belt recall that has been issued in recent months. In April there were 2021 – 2022 Hyundai Elantra and 2020 Hyundai Accent recalls over a similar issue. Another related recall was issued in October 2021.

In February, Hyundai issued the latest in a series of fire-related recalls. The subject vehicles may develop a fire inside the engine compartment, which could lead to injury.

Prior to that, some Hyundai vehicles were subjected to a recall over windshields that may detach. This has been attributed to a supplier error in which insufficient sealant was used to keep the windshield in place. 

Repair

To remedy the issue, Hyundai dealers will install a cap intended to prevent the seat belt pretensioner from deploying abnormally. This will be at no cost to owners.

Vehicle owners can expect to receive communication regarding the repair program by July 15, 2022.

Tesla issues recall due to loss of access to essential functions

Austin, TX – May 21, 2022 – Tesla (NASDAQ:TSLA) is recalling 129,960 vehicles because the infotainment system’s central processing unit (CPU) may overheat, resulting in a loss of access to essential functions, such as warning lights.

This increases the risk of a crash or injury.

The recall includes the following models:

  • 2021 – 2022 Tesla Model S
  • 2021 – 2022 Tesla Model X
  • 2022 Tesla Model 3
  • 2022 Tesla Model Y

Recall summary

During the fast-charging process, the infotainment CPU — the processing unit that controls the screen display — may fail to cool down properly due to a firmware issue. The excess heat can slow down the CPU or trigger a restart. As a result, the center screen may lag or go blank.

Recall risks

If the center screen is not functioning properly, the driver may be unable to view features such as the rearview camera image, the gear selection screen, windshield visibility control settings and warning lights. This increases the risk of a crash or injury.

Warning signs

The Tesla infotainment system’s display may lag or appear blank.

Other Tesla recalls

A recent 2022 Tesla Model 3 recall,  announced in May, involved the failure to display the unit of speed (miles per hour or kilometers per hour). The recall also included the 2018 – 2021 model years. 

In April, the 2017 – 2022 models of the same vehicle were recalled for a second time over a faulty pedestrian warning system

Another recall that Tesla issued in April was over airbags that may fail to deploy. The 2021 – 2022 Model X vehicles were part of this recall.

The repair

Tesla started deploying an over-the-air (OTA) software update to address the overheating of the CPU on May 3 at no cost to owners. It is not clear if the update has been rolled out to all affected cars as of the time of this publication.

Owners can expect to receive further communication from Tesla regarding the repair program by July 1, 2022.

BMW issues recall over defective sunroof control unit

Recall summary

For safety, and to comply with federal regulations, BMW sunroofs are supposed to close only when the key fob is inside the vehicle, indicating that the driver is present.

The affected sunroofs are programmed incorrectly and can be closed  when the key fob is not in the vehicle.

Recall risks

A sunroof that is closed without the key fob present – by an unaccompanied child, for example – can increase the risk of injury.

Other recent BMW recalls

One of the most recent BMW X5 recalls was in March 2022 and included the 2007-2010 BMW X5 SAV. The heating element of the subject vehicles may short circuit and overheat, increasing the risk of injury to the driver and passengers.

Although there have been no notable BMW X6 recalls or BMW X7 recalls in recent months, there was another BMW sunroof-related recall in 2021. In March, BMW recalled nearly 15,000 vehicles whose sunroofs may close even after the car is turned off. Much like the current recall, this was attributed to a programming error.

The repair

Owners are encouraged to take their vehicles to a BMW dealer. Techs will reprogram the roof function control unit, which is responsible for the opening and closing of the sunroof. Alternatively, owners can opt for an over-the-air (OTA) reprogramming. Both options will be at no cost to owners.

Owners can expect to receive further communication from BMW regarding the repair program by June 13, 2022.
