Ford recalls F-Series trucks due to increased risk of rollaway

Dearborn, MI — May 14, 2022 — Ford (NYSE:F) is recalling 23,165 heavy-duty trucks due to an issue with the vehicles’ transmission. The defect can cause the vehicle to roll when it is supposed to be in Park, which increases the risk of a crash.

The recall covers the following models, all equipped with 6.7-liter diesel engines:

  • 2020 Ford Super Duty F-250
  • 2020 Ford Super Duty F-350
  • 2020 Ford Super Duty F-450
  • 2020 Ford Super Duty F-550

Recall summary

A washer inside to a vehicle’s transmission of the recalled vehicles protects the gears against debris, dirt and other contaminants. In the affected vehicles, the washer can disintegrate because of “out-of-specification parts” delivered by a supplier.

When this happens, metallic debris can get into the gearset and damage the gear teeth. Debris from the washer or from the damaged gears can also “prevent the vehicle from achieving or holding Park,” resulting in a rollaway.

The components involved in this recall are the output shaft and planetary carrier #4, with part numbers LC3Z-7060-A and LC3Z-7060-B.

Recall risks

Vehicle rollaway increases the risk of injury from a resulting crash.

Warning signs

Drivers may notice that it is harder than usual to shift gears and that shifting may cause grinding, groaning or popping noises. A malfunction indicator may light up on the dashboard and a loss of power may be observed, depending on the damage to the P4 gear teeth.

Other Ford truck recalls

A Ford F-Series recall of 47,084 2021 F-150 trucks was initiated in April 2022 over a transmission defect caused by a software error. This defect could lead the vehicle to suddenly shift to neutral, preventing the driver from accelerating.

The 2020 and 2021 Ford Super Duty F-350s were the subject of a recall in September 2021 that affected 27,604 vehicles because of the risk of stalling while driving.

The repair

Dealers will inspect the transmission on the affected models and replace part of the gearset free of charge. Ford will reimburse owners for the costs of any previous repair work involving the component.

Affected owners will be notified between May 30, 2022, and June 3, 2022.

Ford recalls F-150 trucks whose airbags may fail to deploy

Dearborn, MI — May 7, 2022 — Ford (NYSE:F) is recalling 19,175 2022 Ford F-150 pickup trucks due to a problem with the steering column, which connects the steering wheel to the steering mechanism. This may result in the airbag not deploying in a crash, increasing the risk of injury.

Recall summary

In addition to connecting the wheel to the steering mechanism, the column also allows the driver to pull the steering wheel closer or push it farther away. A device within the column called a squib connector sends a signal to the driver’s side airbag, enabling it to inflate in a crash.

In the recalled vehicles, a design error resulted in the steering column squib connector wiring being too short during assembly. As a result, the truck’s airbag may not inflate during a crash.

The component involved in this recall is the instrument panel harness, with multiple part numbers including NL3V-14401-VAB and NL3V-14401-VAD.

Recall risks

The airbag that fails to deploy increases the risk of an injury in a crash.

Warning signs

The airbag warning light will activate on the instrument panel, signaling a problem with the airbag inflator.

Other Ford recalls

The 2022 F-150 was also among 391,836 Ford trucks and SUVs recalled earlier this month due to malfunctioning trailer brakes, which could increase the trailer’s stopping distance, as reported. Last month, 157,306 F-150 trucks for the 2021 model year were recalled for faulty windshield wipers

Among recent Ford F-150 recalls was one made for 16,430 2021 F-150 trucks in October 2021 that contained incorrectly routed front seat belts

The repair

Dealers will inspect the Ford F-150 steering column wiring on affected models and install new wiring with the correct length at no charge to the owner. Ford will reimburse owners for the costs of any previous repair work involving the component.

Affected owners will be notified between May 9, 2022, and May 13, 2022.

Ford recalls Escape SUVs over risk of rollaway

Dearborn, MI – May 1, 2022 – Ford (NYSE:F) has issued a recall for 96,015 2015 Ford Escape SUVs over a problem over a transmission issue that could cause the vehicle to roll away, increasing the risk of a crash.

Recall summary

In order to shift a car into a certain transmission, a driver pushes the shifter handle into the intended position. The handle is linked to the transmission by a shifter cable. The cable is fixed in place by a small rubber part called a bushing.

In the recalled vehicles, the bushing that connects the shift cable to the transmission may be damaged or degraded partially because of heat and humidity. When the bushing is damaged, the shift cable can disconnect from the transmission.

If the handle and the transmission are disconnected, the transmission will not respond to the driver’s input. For example, when the driver moves the gearshift lever into the Park position, the transmission might remain in Drive.

The component involved in this recall is the escape shifter cable bushing, with part number DJ5P-7E395-AC.

Recall risks

This may cause the vehicle to roll away. Similarly, the driver could attempt to shift into or out of Reverse, only to have the vehicle remain in the previous gear. Either situation could increase the risk of a crash.

Warning signs

Drivers may notice that the vehicle’s movement does not correspond to the gear they have selected, even if the correct gear is shown on the instrument panel. If the vehicle’s ignition is switched off while the transmission is not in Park, the engine will not restart.

Other Ford recalls

In June 2021, Ford issued a similar recall for 192,080 Ford Transit Connect vans spanning the 2013 to 2021 model years. This was also over degraded bushings that caused the transmission shift cable to disconnect, making the transmission unresponsive to driver input.

Past 2015 Ford Escape recalls have addressed issues such as doors that could open while the vehicle was in motion and seat mounting bolts that could fracture.

The repair

Dealers will replace the shifter cable bushing with a more durable version and add a protective cap. The service will be performed free of charge. Ford will reimburse owners for the costs of any previous repair work involving the damaged component.

Affected owners will be notified on or before May 13, 2022.

Jaguar Land Rover recalls Range Rover SUVs over faulty seat belts

Mahwah, NJ – April 23, 2022 – Tata Motors, which owns Jaguar Land Rover (NYSE:TTM) has issued a recall for 14,812 vehicles due to a problem with the seat belts emergency locking retractor — the device that locks the seat belt in place when the vehicle crashes or slows suddenly. This increases the risk of injury.

This is at least the second recall for these issues since 2019 and includes the following models:

  • 2016 Range Rover
  • 2017 Range Rover
  • 2016 Range Rover Sport
  • 2017 Range Rover Sport

Recall summary

A seat belt prevents the occupants from being thrown or hitting any part of the vehicle in the event of a crash or sudden deceleration — significantly reducing the chance of serious injury or death.

A feature called an emergency locking retractor (ELR) allows the seat belt to freely extend and retract under normal movement, with the excess seat belt webbing wrapping around a spool. If the belt is suddenly yanked, such as in a crash, the ELR automatically locks, preventing occupants from hitting their heads against the windshield or dashboard.

In the recalled vehicles, the seat belt retractor on the driver’s seat may fail to lock at the appropriate level of force, which means that the driver may not be properly restrained in an emergency.

Recall risks

The driver may be thrown against the windshield or the steering wheel or otherwise be hurt in a crash if the seat belt is not working properly.

Other Jaguar Land Rover recalls

Tata Motors recalled more than 18,000 Range Rover Evoque SUVs in February due to other problems with the restraint system, as reported.

In September 2021, a recall was also issued for multiple Jaguar Land Rover models over another retractor problem, which could result in injuries to child occupants in the event of a crash.

There was another recall for the same issue in May 2019 but not all the recalled received the remedy offered under this recall.

The repair

Dealers will inspect the seat belt assembly on the driver’s side and replace any defective components. Repairs will be performed free of charge.

Affected owners will be notified by June 3, 2022.

Hyundai issues recall over faulty trunk emergency release

Fountain Valley, CA – April 17, 2022 – Hyundai (OTCMKTS:HYMTF) is issuing a recall for 63,461 vehicles for a defect in the trunk lid emergency release, which could increase the risk of injury to occupants.

The recall follows on the heels of 169 reports alleging the defect and covers the following models:

  • 2019 Genesis G70
  • 2020 Hyundai Sonata
  • 2020 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid

Recall summary

The trunk acts as the main storage compartment on passenger cars. It is covered by a lid, which is connected to the rest of the vehicle’s body by means of a latch. The Hyundai trunk latch uses a metal lever called a pawl to prevent unnecessary movement of the trunk lid.

In the recalled vehicles, continuous exposure to high temperatures can cause the trunk latch pawl to shrink, making it more difficult for users to open the trunk lid.

Recall risks

Forcibly opening the trunk lid could lead to an injury to the user, as well as damage to the pawl. If small children climb in the trunk and close the lid, they might not be able to get out, exposing them to the risk of injury from lack of oxygen and high temperature.

Warning signs

The defective trunk lid might require an increased effort on the part of the user to open from the locked position.

Other Hyundai recalls

Hyundai previously issued a recall in August 2021 for 348,158 vehicles including the 2017-2018 Sonata, 2016-2018 Sonata Hybrid, and 2018-2020 Accent over a similar issue.

Hyundai’s sister company Kia also recalled 253,074 vehicles for the same defect the following month, covering the 2016-2018 Kia Forte and the 2018-2019 Kia Rio.

There was a Hyundai Sonata recall in October 2021 due to faulty turn signals, as reported.

The repair

Dealers will inspect the trunk latch on the affected vehicles and replace it, if necessary. All repairs will be done free of charge.

Hyundai will also reimburse owners for expenses incurred on repairs involving the defective component before the recall was issued.

Affected owners will be notified by May 20, 2022.

Ford recalls F-150 pickups with faulty transmission

Dearborn, MI – April 16, 2022 – Ford (NYSE:F) issued a recall for 47,084 vehicles over a transmission defect that could cause the vehicle to suddenly shift to neutral while in motion, increasing the risk of a crash.

The recall includes 2021  Ford F-150 pickup trucks.

Recall summary

During normal driving, it is important for the transmission to remain in gear as much as possible so that the driver can maintain control over the vehicle while it is in motion.

The transmission in the affected vehicles can shift to neutral on its own while driving due to a software error in the Powertrain Control Module (PCM), which acts as the “brain” of the car, as reported.

The component involved in this recall is the PCM/ECM Calibration Software with multiple part numbers, including ML3A-14C204-BGA and ML3A-14C204-BKA.

Recall risks

Drivers will be unable to accelerate when the car is in neutral to avoid sudden hazards.

The neutral state also prevents the engine from assisting the brakes in slowing the vehicle down, augmenting the risk of an accident.

For more information on risks, please visit the following article on a BMW recall due to the same issue.

Warning signs

A warning light in the shape of a wrench will activate on the dashboard when the problem occurs. This will be followed by the transmission shifting into neutral gear, followed by attempts to shift to Park if the vehicle is traveling slower than 2 miles per hour.

Once the vehicle comes to a complete stop, the shifter will automatically engage Park mode.

Safety tips

Drivers can temporarily regain use of the transmission by switching the engine off and on again.

Other Ford F-150 recalls

There have been at least two F-150 transmission recalls for earlier year-models.

More than 1.2 million Ford F-150 vehicles spanning the 2011 to 2013 model years were recalled in February 2019 for a similar PCM problem, as reported.

Another recall for the same model-years was issued in June 2019 over the same issue, covering more than 107,000 vehicles.

The repair

Dealers will inspect the PCM on affected vehicles and perform a software update free of charge. Customers who have paid for previous repairs of the component involved will be reimbursed accordingly.

Affected owners will be notified by May 6, 2022.

Recall summary

The oil separator is part of the engine that maximizes its performance and increases horsepower by filtering away excess air and other gases that mix with motor oil during the engine’s normal operation, according to LSX Magazine.

In the recalled vehicles, a crack may develop at the edge of the oil separator housing, causing the seals to fail and leading oil to leak out close to the engine.

The component involved in this recall is the oil separator with part number HX7G-6C757-BA.

Recall risks

If the oil gets close to a heat source,  it could lead to a fire in the engine bay, increasing the likelihood of injury. For more on the risk of engine fires, please see this article about a BMW recall due to a similar issue.

Warning signs

Drivers may smell burning oil or see smoke coming from the engine bay.

Other Ford recalls

Ford issued a recall for the 2021-2022 Bronco Sport and 2021-2022 Escape vehicles in December 2021 over reduced braking performance, as reported.

In September of the same year, the same model-years were recalled due to the risk of engine stall. The recall also included the 2021 Lincoln Corsair.

There was a small Ford Bronco recall in December 2021 due to a misaligned radar module that may make it difficult for the vehicle to keep a “safe distance” from other vehicles, upping the risk of a crash.

The repair

Dealers will inspect the oil separator on the affected vehicles for damage or oil leaks. If either are found, the oil separator and seals will be replaced. Repairs will be performed free of charge. Ford will reimburse owners who have already paid for repairs related to this recall.

  • 2013 – 2017 Audi S7
  • 2013 – 2017 Audi S8
  • 2014 – 2017 Audi RS7

Recall summary

Turbocharger is a device that is fitted on the engine to improve its performance and fuel efficiency. There are bearings inside the turbocharger that are essential to its operation as they allow the charger to spin at high speeds, increasing the vehicle’s power output. The bearings must be sufficiently lubricated by an oil supply system so they can withstand extremely high temperatures and pressures produced as a result of the turbocharger operation.

The strainer used by the supply system to keep impurities can become clogged by “carbon deposits” and other contaminants present in the oil. When this happens, it can deprive bearings of lubrication, causing them to wear out faster than usual. It is not clear why this is occurring.

Recall risks

This defect can cause the turbocharger to break. This can cut off power to the engine and result in the vehicle stalling, which increases the risk of a crash.

Warning signs

Warning messages such as the malfunction indicator light (MIL), low oil warning light or electronic power control (EPC) may flash on the dashboard. Customers may also notice “extended cranking or rough idling.”

Background of the recall

This recall is a result of an investigation by the U.S. auto safety regulator, the National Transportation Highway Safety Administration (NHTSA), launched a year ago on the back of 58 complaints and a number of field reports alleging a sudden stall while driving. Some of the complaints allege that the car was not able to be restarted after losing power. Several drivers mentioned that repairs ran them in tens of thousands or even hundreds of thousands of dollars.

The repair

Volkswagen will reimburse owners who have already incurred repair expenses arising from the defect while dealers will replace the defective oil strainer for the turbocharger and perform an oil change. All repairs will be done free of charge.

Affected owners will be notified by May 20, 2022.

Other Audi recalls

There was an Audi RS6 recall earlier this month due to fuel gauges that could show an inaccurate fuel level, which could lead to the car running out of gas and a stall, as reported. The recall included more than 45,000 RS6 and other vehicles, such as RS7, also as reported.

A recall was issued for more than 280,000 Audi vehicles in December 2021 over due to the loss of control due to premature tire wear, as reported.

Volkswagen also recalled more than 40,000 Audi models in May 2021 over the suspension system which could potentially break, compromising the vehicle’s control.

Kia recalls Cadenza sedans over detaching windshields

Irvine, CA – March 27, 2022 – Kia (OTCMKTS:KIMTF) has issued a recall for 30,362 vehicles due to the risk of their windshields detaching from the vehicle. This increases the risk of a crash.

The recall covers the following sedans:

  • 2014 Kia Cadenza
  • 2015 Kia Cadenza
  • 2016 Kia Cadenza

Recall summary

Automotive windshields serve to protect car occupants from wind, rain and flying debris during travel, apart from contributing to the vehicle’s aerodynamics. Specific sections of the windshield in the recalled vehicles may have inadequate adhesive, causing the glass to be insufficiently attached to the rest of the car.

The component involved in this recall is the front windshield glass, including  part numbers 86111-3R150 and 86111-3R***.

Recall risks

Insufficient adhesion of the windshield may cause the glass to detach from the vehicle’s body during operation. This could present an increased risk of a crash, resulting in injuries or property damage.

Warning signs

Occupants may notice “water leaks” or hear “wind noise” coming from the windshield glass.

Other Kia Cadenza recalls

A prior Kia Cadenza recall was initiated in March 2021, covering more than 370,000 Kia vehicles including Cadenzas from the 2017 to 2019 model years.  The recall was done due to the risk of these cars catching fire, as reported.

Fires are an ongoing issue for many Kia and Hyundai models. The U.S. government auto safety regulator, the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration (NHTSA), is currently investigating both manufacturers to determine if the fire-related recalls conducted up-to-date  have done enough to address the issues and if more cars will need to be recalled.

The repair

Dealers will remove and reattach the windshield using a better adhesive. All repairs will be done free of charge and owners who have already incurred repair expenses will be reimbursed by Kia.

Affected owners will be notified by May 13, 2022.
