A Small Number of Mercedes Cars May Have Rearview Camera Delays

rLaguna Hills, Calif. – February 5, 2020 – Mercedes Benz USA is recalling certain 2019 A220 and A220 4MATIC vehicles. Affected vehicles’ rearview cameras may have a delay between their display and actual events because of a software problem. As a result, these vehicles are not in compliance with Federal Motor Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 111, “Rearview Mirrors.”

The Defect

Affected vehicles’ rearview cameras may have an insufficient response time. A delayed image might mean that drivers miss hazards that are behind them, increasing the possibility of an accident. 

This defect only occurs in certain situations. Specifically, the vehicle’s central display must be manually turned off before the ignition is turned off, and the gear selector must be shifted into reverse within 25 seconds of the car subsequently restarting. Aside from that, however, the driver will have no warning signs that their rearview camera is not working at full capacity.

Mercedes Benz began to review rearview backup camera performance on some of its vehicles in Aug 2018. This internal review came as a result of specific information and Mercedes Benz’s line of vans. However, reviewers determined that the issue affecting Mercedes’ vans might also be occurring on the rearview cameras of some passenger cars.

In Oct 2018, Mercedes Benz began incorporating an updated rearview camera software into its vehicles, as well as already manufactured vehicles that were still in production facilities or vehicle preparation centers.

In the summer of 2019, a task force set up by Mercedes Benz America began conducting a review of open plant actions. During that review, officials became aware of the possibility that some of the updated vehicles may have been reworked in ways that did not meet specifications exactly, causing the defect and putting the vehicles out of compliance with Federal Motor Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 111, “Rearview Mirrors.” Task force workers informed the Mercedes Benz after sales department. Further analysis determined the range of affected vehicles as being at only 22 vehicles sold in the United States. At the time of the recall, no reports of delay or associated accidents have been reported.

On Jan 17, 2020, Mercedes Benz America decided to conduct a safety recall.

Solution

Affected owners can take their vehicles into a certified Mercedes Benz dealer to have the software of their rearview camera updated. Dealers will be notified of the pending recall on Feb 3, 2020. Owners of recalled vehicles will be notified on March 27, 2020.

Mercedes Benz will be required to send a draft of their planned owner notification letters to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration at least five days prior to mailing. In addition, the company must submit copies of any additional communications with owners and dealers, including notices and bulletins, to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration within five days of their publication. Finally, Mercedes Benz must submit six quarterly reports to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration moving forward

The defect in rearview camera technology was fixed in production from Oct 2018 forward. 

Dealers that sell any recalled vehicles in their inventory previous to repair are in violation of federal law. Additionally, car rental companies that rent any recalled vehicles previous to repair are also in violation of federal law.

Electrical Shorts in Hyundai ABS Modules’

Laguna Hills, CA – Feb 6, 2020 – Hyundai Motor America (Hyundai) is recalling certain 2006-2011 Elantra and 2007-2011 Elantra Touring vehicles citing the risk of short circuiting ABS modules. Electrical shorts within the affected ABS Modules’ may result in engine fires, even when the car is not being used. 

The estimated total of affected vehicles is 429,686

The defect

Over 400,000 Hyundai vehicles from 2006-2011 are under recall due to a risk of electrical shortage and increased risk of engine combustion. Hyundai Motor America received their first claim of an alleged engine fire on a 2007 Hyundai Elantra in October 2017. Hyundai Motors immediately requested all field information that could possibly related to other incidents of internal engine combustion and found two additional reports of internal fires in Elantra vehicles. On all three vehicles various fuses related to the Anti-lock Brake (ABS) Module were found open, indicating the possible origin of the three internal shorts and engine combustion. After two of the three known incident parts were received in November 2017, Hyundai Motors analyzed the recovered parts for signs of internal shorting due to exposed brake fluid or moisture contamination. By March 2018, Hyundai Motors could not properly confirm that internal shorting was caused by moisture ingress due to the extent of heat damage to the incident ABS Modules. In the remaining months of 2018, Hyundai continued to motor incidents in the field but  was made aware of only one additional incident and decided to initiate a recovery of in-use ABS modules for random inspection.

By March 2019, a total of eleven new vehicles were surveyed (one new incident vehicle and ten previously in-use vehicles) but no sign of moisture ingress was apparent. From April 2019 to December 2019, Hyundai Motors continued their analysis in warranty part returns from both U.S. markets and international markets, hoping to find evidence of possible moisture interference. In this analysis Hyundai found certain recovery parts conditions that could potentially lead to increased moisture in the electrical circuit of ABS modules. Although no certain trend relating to Elantra design or manufacturing, Hyundai recommended addressing the issue by de-powering the ABS module during the ignition OFF state but ultimately decided to conduct an official safety recall on January 28, 2020.

The solution

Although Hyundai is still looking for premature signs of moisture ingress in ABS Modules, the proper solution at the moment is to install a relay in the vehicle’s main junction box to ensure little to no risk of an ABS short-circuit. Any official Hyundai dealer will perform this recall repair free of charge. Owners will be notified by Hyundai Motor America on the official expected recall date – April 3, 2020. Mitsubishi AirBag Inflators Cause AirBag to Deflate/Inflate Improperly

Laguna Hills, Calif. – January 17, 2020 – Mitsubishi Motors North America, Inc. has recalled 1998-2000 Montero vehicles due to issues with AirBag inflators. This inflator recall is one in a series of many airbag deployment issues resulting in multiple recalls.

The estimated total of affected vehicles is 20,000.

The Defect

20,000 1998-2000 Montero Mitsubishi vehicles are under recall due to airbag deployment issues. In the event of a crash or emergency airbag deployment, the airbag inflator may rupture and send hazardous metal fragments towards the driver. Airbag inflators have also been known to deflate and not provide proper protection to the driver in the event of a crash. Both could risk serious injury to the vehicle driver and other occupants.

The affected airbag inflators are installed with Non-Azide Driver air bag inflators (NADI) and were not equipped with phase stabilized ammonium nitrate (PSAN) propellant. High or long term exposure to humidity or excess absorbed moisture may cause the inflators to underinflate or rupture and send hazardous materials towards the vehicles interior.

The Solution

This official recall is still under development according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). Owners should expect to be notified by Mitsubishi once the official recall begins – which is March 22, 2020. Fiat-Chrysler Recalling Ram ProMaster Delivery Vans

Laguna Hills, Calif. – May 26, 2022 – Fiat-Chrysler has remedied issues with 146,482 vehicles including the 2017 RAM Promaster that was dealing with transmission issues caused by a disconnected cable on the shifter. Additionally, 4,948 of these models have been categorized as unreachable and 3,527 have been removed from the recall. Three groups of these 2017 RAM Promaster models with Transmission Shifter Cables issues were remedied in 2020, four groups were remedied in 2021, and one group during 2022.

Laguna Hills, Calif. – January 23, 2020 – Fiat-Chrysler is recalling certain 2014-2019 Ram ProMaster Delivery Vans with 3.6-liter engines because of faulty transmission shifter cables that may separate and cause severe vehicle damage.

The estimated total of affected vehicles is 222,207.

The Defect:

Fiat-Chysler is recalling certain 3.6-liter transmission Ram ProMaster Delivery Vans that were originally assembled in Saltillo, Mexico. Of the recalled vehicles about 3% are expected to have the faulty transmission. If the transmission shifter cable separates the vehicle could experience problems with gear shifting. The driver of the vehicle may also notice that the transmission will read that it is in a different gear than the transmission has been set in, leading to a vehicle being put in park but still in drive or neutral gear. This could lead to injury both to vehicle occupants and those outside of the vehicle. Certain warning messages will display on the dash of the vehicle if the driver’s side door is opened and the transmission is not in park. Drivers will also find that the transmission is easier to shift if the shifter cable is separated.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) there are zero reported field reports of issues and no crashes or injuries. Fiat-Chrysler has reported approximately 545 warranty claims.

The Solution

Fiat-Chrysler has claimed that the solution to the issue would be to install a new shifter cable at no charge. Any Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, Ram, or Fiat dealer will perform this repair. If customers have paid for the repair they will be reimbursed. Customers and vehicle owners will be informed about the recall by Fiat-Chrysler in May 2019.

Affected vehicle owners who suspecting that this recall applies to their vehicle are asked to bring their van into any authorized Ram dealership or to call Fiat-Chrysler customer service at 1 (800) 334-9200.

Toyota Recalls 3.4 Million Vehicles, Claiming Faulty Airbag Deployment

Laguna Hills, Calif. – January 21, 2020 – Toyota is recalling certain 2011-2019 Corolla, 2011-2013 Matrix, 2012-2018 Avalon and 2013-2018 Avalon Hybrid vehicles that may be installed with a faulty airbag installation.

The estimated total of affected vehicles is 3.4 million.

The Defect

Toyota is recalling 3.4 million vehicles worldwide (estimated 2.9 million affected U.S. vehicles) claiming that they were installed with an electronic defect causing the air bags not to deploy during a crash. The electronic control defect in the affected vehicles are not equipped with requisite protection against electrical noise during a vehicle crash – this can lead to an improper deployment of the airbag and impeded use and operation of seat-belt pretensioners. The electrical over-stress in certain Toyota vehicles is estimated to have caused one fatal crashes according to NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration).

The faulty airbag control units were originally installed by TRW Automotive Holdings Corp and are estimated to be installed in 12.3 million Toyota, Fiat, Chrysler, Honda, Hyundai, Kia and Mitsubishi automobiles. NHTSA claims that eight deaths could be caused by the over-stress of the installed airbag control units. 

The Solution

Toyota has claimed that the solution to the issue would be to install a noise filter between the airbag control unit and the wire harness. If vehicle owners suspect that their specific vehicle is affected, they are advised to bring their vehicle into an authorized Toyota dealership for service or call Toyota customer service at 800-331-4331.

Besides this, 0 have been declared as unreachable and 606 has been removed from the recall. Four groups of these BMW models were remedied in 2020 and two groups were fixed in 2021 for this un-announced explosion risk on the driver and/or passenger airbags.

Isuzu Recalling 1,138 Vehicles Due To Seat Belt Complications

Laguna Hills, California – January 23, 2020 – Isuzu is recalling certain 2019 and 2020 vehicles equipped with a dual mode belt locking mechanism that will not lock in the event of a vehicle crash.

The estimated total of affected vehicles is 1,138.

The defect

Isuzu is recalling certain Isuzu and Chevrolet vehicles equipped with a faulty seat belt webbing locking mechanism. The potential affected number of vehicles is 1,138.

Vehicles equipped with the dual mode belt locking mechanism may not properly restrain the occupant as intended in the event of a collision. So far, zero deaths have been reported to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

Affected Vehicles Include:

  • 2020 Isuzu NPR HD, NPR XD, NQR and NRR
  • Chevrolet 4500HD, 4500XD, 5500HD and 5500XD 
  • 2019 Isuzu NPR HD GAS, NPR GAS
  • Chevrolet 4500 and Chevrolet 3500

The solution

Isuzu will notify owners by February 28, 2020 when the official recall is expected to begin. Authorized Isuzu and Chevrolet dealerships will inspect and replace the seat belt assembly, as necessary and free of charge.

Honda Airbag Inflators May Explode Unexpectedly

Laguna Hills, Calif. – January 21, 2020 – Honda (American Honda Motor Co.) is recalling select 1996-2000 vehicles that are equipped with airbag inflators which deflate before deployment or explode without warning, sending sharp objects into the vehicle.

The estimated total of affected vehicles is 1,500,705.

Affected Vehicles Include:

  • 1997-1998 Acura 2.2CL
  • 1998-1999 Acura 2.3CL
  • 1997-1999 Acura 3.0CL
  • 2001 Acura 3.2CL and Acura MDX

The Defect:

Almost 2 million Honda vehicles are under recall, sighting a manufacturing issue in the airbag inflators of 1996-2000 year vehicles. Certain airbag inflators were equipped with Non-Azide driver airbag inflators (NADI) that were not installed with phase stabilized ammonium (PSAN) propellant. These affected NADI inflators can absorb excess moisture over long periods of vehicle use. This excess moisture as well as long term exposure to high temperatures can cause inflators to de-inflate or explode without warning, sending dangerous items into the vehicles interior.

Solution:

All affected vehicle owners will be notified by Honda before March 9, 2020. The repair will entail the installation of a replacement driver frontal airbag inflator that does not contain phase stabilized ammonium nitrate (PSAN) propellant. Unfortunately, dealers do not have access to all parts needed for the full repair. Therefore, a second letter will be mailed to affected vehicle owners once certain replacement parts are available. Honda AirBag Inflators May Explode Unexpectedly or Deflate

Laguna Hills, Calif. – January 23, 2020 – Honda (American Honda Motor Co.) has placed a recall under certain 2000-2002 Honda vehicles, sighting airbag inflator malfunction. 

The estimated total of affected vehicles is 875,966.

The Defect

Honda is recalling almost 900,000 vehicles due to airbag inflator malfunction. As part of a previous vehicle repair, affected vehicles were installed with a replacement driver frontal airbag module that, due to a manufacturing issue, caused the NADI inflator to absorb moisture. The excess moisture absorbed by the NADI inflator caused airbag cushions to de-inflate or, upon deployment, send metal fragments towards the vehicles occupants. Both could cause serious injuries to the vehicles passengers. This recall follows in a long series of passenger airbag inflator recalls.

Affected Vehicles Include:

  • 2001-2002 Acura 3.2CL
  • 2000-2003 Acura 3.5RL
  • 2000-2001 Acura 3.2TL, Honda CR-V and Honda Odyssey
  • 2001-2002 Acura MDX
  • 2000 Accord Coupe, Accord Sedan, Civic Coupe, and Civic Sedan vehicles.

Solution

All Honda vehicles suspected of recall will be notified by mail on March 9, 2020. A second letter will be mailed by Honda once new replacement parts become available for the affected vehicles. Any owner suspecting that their vehicle is under recall can bring their vehicle into any authorized Honda dealership to perform the proper repairs. However the replacement parts for the new driver frontal airbag inflator design are not yet available, but should be available after March 9, 2020. Toyota recalls certain Toyota and Lexus vehicles due to faulty fuel pump

Laguna Hills, Calif. – January 16, 2020 – Toyota is recalling certain 2018 and 2019 Toyota and Lexus model year vehicles that may be installed with a faulty fuel pump. Hybrid vehicles are exempt from this recall.

The estimated total of affected vehicles is more than 1,830,000

The Defect

Toyota has not released specifics on the defect in the faulty fuel pumps. Affected drivers should expect to notice that the vehicle’s engine will start to run rough and a series of warning lights may appear on the dashboard or car monitor. Affected vehicles engines may stall and not restart if installed with the recalled fuel pump. 

Affected vehicles include

• 2018 and 2019 Toyota 4Runner, Highlander, Land Cruiser, and Sequoia SUVs; Toyota Camry sedans; Toyota Sienna minivans; and Toyota Tacoma and Tundra pickup trucks

• 2018 and 2019 Lexus ES 350, GS 350, IS 300, LS 500 and sedans; Lexus LC 500, RC 350, and RC 300 coupes; and Lexus GX 460, LX 570, and RX 350 SUVs

• 2019 Lexus NX 300 and RX 350 L SUVs and GS 300 and GS200t sedans

• 2019 Toyota Avalon and Corolla sedans

Toyota cannot confirm or deny the number of injuries related to this specific recall.

Solution

According to a statement released by Toyota there is no current solution for this specific recall as the company is still “investigating the issue.” If vehicle owners suspect that their specific vehicle is affected, they are advised to stop operation of the vehicle and call Toyota customer service at 800-331-4331 or Lexus customer service at 800-255-3987 immediately. The specific recall numbers for Toyota vehicles are 20TB02 and 20TA02. The specific recall numbers for Lexus vehicles are 20LB01 and 20LA01. 

Affected vehicle owners should expect a formal notification from Toyota by mid-March, with specific instructions as the cause and solution of the faulty fuel pump issue.
