Ford recalls Maverick trucks over reduced visibility

Dearborn, MI – May 28, 2024 – Ford (NYSE:F) is recalling 242,669 2022-2024 Ford Maverick pickup trucks whose tail lights may disengage on their own. This makes the vehicles less visible on the road, upping the chances of a crash and injury.  

Recall summary

The listed trucks are fitted with a computer called the Body Control Module (BCM), which turns the lights on and off and monitors their voltage. Due to a programming error, this module may falsely detect that one or both tail light bulbs are using too much electricity and shut them down to prevent over-current.

Recall risks

The truck whose tail lights are out is less likely to be spotted by other motorists, who may crash into it, increasing the risk of an injury. 

Other Ford recalls

This is not the first issue that Ford Mavericks have with the Body Control Module. Back in January 2024, these trucks were recalled because their turn signals would fail to engage, as reported.

A month ago, in April 2024, Ford recalled nearly 10,000 Bronco SUVs because their child locks were defective.

The repair

Dealers will update the BCM version free of charge. 

The owners should be notified between May 20, 2024, and May 24, 2024.

Hyundai issues umpteenth Genesis recall

Fountain Valley, CA – May 24, 2024 – Hyundai (OTCMKTS:HYMTF), which owns the Genesis brand, is recalling 31,440 cars and SUVs that may stall. This ups the risk of crash and injury, especially if it happens in fast-moving traffic. 

The recall is Hyundai’s fourth recall for the brand in the last couple of months. It also comes on the back on hundreds of stalling incidents and serves as an expansion of another recall conducted for the same issue last year.

The list of the affected models includes: 

  • 2022 – 2023 Genesis G80
  • 2022 – 2023 Genesis G90
  • 2022 – 2023 Genesis GV70
  • 2022 – 2023 Genesis GV80

Recall summary

The affected vehicles’ fuel pump may jam and shut down due to excessive internal resistance caused by incorrectly manufactured moving parts. This would leave the engine without fuel supply and cause the car to stall.  

Recall risks

Stalling in fast-moving traffic can augment the risk of injury.

Background of the recall 

Hyundai conducted the original recall for the issue in September of last year. Subsequently, the manufacturer became aware of additional affected vehicles which led to the present recall.

Between July 2022 and February 2024, Hyundai received 463 reports of stalling “incidents.”  No injuries or crashes have been reported.

Other Hyundai Genesis recalls

Some of these vehicles may have been affected by a fire-related recall, which took place last month.

On a separate note, transmission issues that may result in a rollaway were the cause of another recent Genesis recall.    

Electric models are not immune to problems, either, with almost 100,000 Hyundai and Genesis EVs being affected by a recall, which was also caused by a risk of stalling.  

The repair

Dealers will replace the fuel pump free of charge.

Owners will be notified on June 18, 2024.

Fountain Valley, CA – May 21, 2024 – Hyundai (OTCMKTS:HYMTF) is recalling 13,511 cars and SUVs that may stall, increasing the risk of a crash and injury, especially in high-speed traffic. 

The recall affects the following models: 

  • 2024 Hyundai Elantra
  • 2024 Hyundai Venue
  • 2024 Hyundai Kona

Recall summary

The Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) is an emission control system that returns a portion of exhaust gases back into the engine to reduce emissions and increase engine efficiency.

Due to a supplier error, the system was “contaminated” during manufacturing. This could result in a short-circuit and cause the vehicle to stall.

Recall risks

Besides being difficult to maneuver, a stalled vehicle may get hit by other cars, especially in fast-moving traffic.  

Warning signs

EGR and engine issues could trigger the malfunction indicator light (MIL) on the dashboard. 

Other Hyundai recalls

Stalling was the cause of another Hyundai recall which took place last month on the back of a U.S. government investigation, as reported.

Some of the models involved in that recall were affected by another recall due to the risk of rollaway, also as reported.

Hyundai has also been long plagued by fire-related recalls. In fact, the 2024 Hyundai Kona – which is part of the present recall – was among the cars recalled in January because of the possibility of catching fire following a crash.

The repair

Dealers will replace the EGR valve assembly free of charge. 

The notifications to the owners will be sent on June 28, 2024.

Toyota recalls Prius hybrids whose doors may open unexpectedly

Plano, TX – May 16, 2024 – Toyota (NYSE:TM) is recalling 55,690 hybrid cars whose rear doors may open on their own, upping the risk of injury.

The recall affects the following models: 

  • 2023 – 2024 Toyota Prius
  • 2023 – 2024 Toyota Prius Prime

Recall summary

Instead of a conventional door handle, these cars’ rear doors are opened using a push button, which activates the latch mechanism.

Due to a supplier error, the outside push-button assembly was not sealed sufficiently, allowing water to enter. This can result in a short circuit and cause the doors to open unexpectedly.

Recall risks

Unexpected door opening while the vehicle is in motion or during a crash increases the risk of passenger injury.  

Warning signs

An opened door will trigger a warning notification on the instrument panel accompanied by a buzzing sound. 

Other Toyota recalls

In January 2024, Toyota recalled nearly a million cars over a passenger airbag defect. 

Multiple fires led to a massive recall of Toyota RAV4 SUVs in November 2023, as reported.

The repair

Dealers will replace the outside door handle assemblies free of charge. 

The notifications to the owners will be sent between June 2, 2024, and June 16, 2024.

Franklin, TN – May 14, 2024 – Nissan (OTCMKTS:NSANY) is recalling 9,645 2024 Nissan Sentra sedans cars that may lose power. This ups the chances of an accident and injury.

Recall summary

Driveshafts transfer power to the wheels, allowing cars to move forward.

In the affected vehicles, the left-hand driveshaft was not fitted correctly and may lose contact with the transmission, resulting in a transmission fluid leak and potentially, a loss of power.

Warning signs

Low transmission fluid level may cause “jerking and hesitation” and trigger the malfunction indicator light (MIL) on the dashboard.  

Other Nissan recalls

Auburn Hills, MI – May 9, 2024 – Stellantis (NYSE:STLA), which owns the Jeep brand, is recalling 12,221 2022 Jeep Cherokee SUVs whose turn signals may disengage immediately after being turned on.

The defect augments the risk of an accident.

Recall summary

Turn signals on cars “self-cancel” after the driver returns the steering wheel to the central position. In the affected SUVs, the mechanism that ensures that was not built correctly, causing the turn signal to disengage as soon as the driver releases the stalk.  

Recall risks

With turn signals not operating, other motorists may not be aware of the driver’s intentions, which increases the risk of a crash and injury.       

Other Jeep recalls

Some of these SUVs may have been affected by a July 2023 recall caused by the loss of stability, as reported.

More recently, in May 2024, Jeep recalled hybrid Wranglers and Grand Cherokees over an issue with the windshield defrosting system, also as reported.

The repair

Dealers will replace the steering column control module free of charge. 

Owners will be notified on May 17, 2024.

Tesla recalls Cybertruck over unintended acceleration

Austin, TX – May 2, 2024 – Tesla (NASDAQ:TSLA) is recalling 3,878 2024 Tesla Cybertrucks that may unexpectedly accelerate, upping the risk of crash and injury.

Recall summary

The accelerator pedal in the affected trucks has a rubber pad on its end, whose job is to provide sufficient grip for the driver’s foot. Due to a supplier error, the pad may slip and get stuck in the interior trim, pinning the accelerator pedal to the floor.    

Recall risks

All risks posed by unintended acceleration are described in this recent Hyundai recall. 

Warning signs

The driver may notice the accelerator is less responsive.

Separately, if the brake is pressed while the accelerator is jammed, there will be a warning message on the display accompanied by an audible alert. 

Safety tips

If the accelerator jams, press the brake as you normally would. This will cut the power to the wheels and stop the vehicle. 

Other Tesla recalls

Some of these Tesla Cybertrucks may have been affected by a recall from February of this year, which was caused by insufficiently visible warning messages on their display.

The repair

Dealers will inspect the accelerator pedal and repair or replace it with an updated version. The repair will be free of charge.

Due to a software error, the affected vehicles’ rearview camera image may be partially blocked by a “Trailer Parking Assist” message on the display,

Other Hyundai recalls

Both Hyundai and its sister company Kia have been plagued by fire-related recalls and are currently under a U.S. government investigation to evaluate the adequacy of existing remedies and figure out if more cars need to be recalled.

The latest recall for the issue occurred earlier this month when the company recalled close to 30,000 Genesis vehicles, as reported.

This followed another Genesis recall which also occurred in April due to the risk of stalling while driving, also as reported.

Dealers will update the rearview camera software free of charge. 

Owners will receive letters with more information on June 1, 2024.

Subaru issues Legacy and Outback recalls due to faulty airbags

Camden, NJ – April 25, 2024 – Subaru (OTCMKTS:FUJHY) is recalling 118,723 cars whose airbags may fail to deploy in a crash, upping the risk of an injury.

The affected models include: 

  • 2020 – 2022 Subaru Legacy
  • 2020 – 2022 Subaru Outback

The recall is being conducted on the back of hundreds of warranty claims.

Recall summary

Cars generally have a system of sensors called the Occupant Detection System (ODS) which only deploys airbags if there is a person in the seat during a crash. 

Due to a supplier error, the listed cars’ ODS may develop an electrical short due to moisture ingress. This may cause the system to malfunction and not deploy the front passenger airbag even if there is someone in the seat.

Warning signs

A malfunctioning sensor will trigger the supplemental restraint system (SRS) warning light, as well as the “front passenger’s frontal airbag OFF indicator” on the dashboard.

In September of last year, there was a Subaru BRZ recall due to malfunctioning rear turn signals, as reported.

Irvine, CA – April 22, 2024 – Kia (OTCMKTS: KIMTF) is recalling 427,407 2020-2022 Kia Telluride SUVs which may roll away when in Park. The defect augments the risk of a crash and injury.

Recall summary

Driveshaft is one of the most critical components in a car which transfers power to the wheels, allowing the vehicle to move forward.

The driveshaft of the affected vehicles may not fully engage due to a manufacturing error. Over time, “partial engagement can cause damage” to the part, allowing the vehicle to roll away even though the gear is placed into Park.

Warning signs

Apart from a “grinding noise,” the driver may notice the SUV lacks power during acceleration.

The recall follows “ten warranty claims, three techline cases and four customer complaints.” No injuries or crashes have been reported.

The repair

Dealers will update the Electronic Parking Brake (EPB) software so it activates when the transmission is shifted into Drive or when the driver opens the door. The repair will be free of charge.  

Letters with detailed instructions will be sent to drivers between May 15, 2024 and May 17, 2024.
