Takata Prepares For $1 Billion Settlement [Video]

After a massive recall involving 19 automakers and 42 million vehicles, air bag manufacturer Takata may be preparing to settle with federal prosecutors over the faulty components that killed 11 and injured 184 in the U.S.

The Wall Street Journal reports that Takata may plead guilty to criminal misconduct and pay a $1 billion settlement over the next few years. Despite the steep cost, the news source added that this may be the best way for the manufacturer to stem losses related to continuous recalls.

Even so, this doesn’t necessarily mean that the saga has come to an end. Prosecutors are reportedly still considering charging the company with wire fraud. They argue that Takata purposefully withheld information about the dangers associated with the faulty air bags.

Hyundai Faces Transmission Lawsuit [Video]

Plaintiffs in a recent lawsuit are alleging that Hyundai vehicle models with 7-speed automatic transmissions have defects that can cause them to stop moving.

The cars named in the lawsuit include the Hyundai’s Electra Eco, Sonata Eco, Tucson and Veloster Turbo. Plaintiffs claim that shortly after they purchased their Veloster Turbo, they lost the ability to accelerate while driving on the highway.

The problem may be related to a dual-clutch transmission control module, which determines the best gear-shifting option for optimal fuel efficiency. A malfunction could cause acceleration problems or stalling without warning.

Hyundai has conducted related vehicle recalls for transmission issues in the past, but the plaintiffs state that nothing has been done to solve this particular problem.

Honda Working With Repair Shops To Find Takata Airbags [Video]

In an effort to track down every vehicle with a faulty Takata air bag, Honda plans to work with independent repair shops to flag cars as they come in for repairs.

According to Autoweek, Honda and software provider CCC have a program that mechanics will use to notify customers if their cars are subject to open Takata air bag recalls that haven’t been acted upon.

The Takata defect was so widespread that automakers are going to great lengths to ensure that the 70 million inflators that found their way into U.S. vehicles are accounted for. This approach will help protect those who bought their cars secondhand.

Engine Room Connections in Some Sentras Could be Faulty [Video]

Franklin, Tenn. — August 30, 2016 — Nissan has recalled more than fifteen hundred Sentra autos from the 2016 model year. These units could have control issues that affect engine performance. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration statement said that the engine room harness could lead to terminal connection issues that would determine whether the engine functions normally, potentially stalling.

The official recall is scheduled to start August 26th. During an April investigation, Nissan both addressed the problem themselves and prompted the component supplier, Yazaki, to investigate as well.

Because terminal pins in these vehicles could be too large to fit, the remedy will see dealers replace the pin entirely.

Possible Seat Back Welding Issue Discovered in Some Ford Vehicles [Video]

Ford is addressing an issue that could push vehicles outside of safety standard requirements. According to a recent statement, nearly fifty-three hundred vehicles could be at risk due to a seat back welding problem.

The recall affects two different 2016 vehicle lines: the Ford F-150 and Ford Explorer. In both of these autos, the bad weld could leave the seat back looking loose. Occupants may notice a squeaking or rattling sound.

Dealers will examine the assemblies of these vehicles and replace the seat back frames if necessary. The official owner notification will take place between the nineteenth and fifteenth of August.

New Chrysler Vehicles Part of Seat Belt Related Recall [Video]

Chrysler has a new recall on its hands for some recently produced vehicles. More than thirty-five hundred twenty seventeen Pacifica autos may feature fragile seat belt parts.

Official documents stated that some of the stow clips could break in affected models. If so, the occupants would not be able to use the seat belt as intended. The recalled vehicles were made between February and April twenty sixteen.

The broken stow clips were first discovered earlier this year as part of a March twenty-sixth inspection at the FCA Windsor Assembly Plant. The manufacturer itself did not launch a recall until June twenty-first.
