Ferrari recalls vehicles over faulty brakes

Englewood Cliffs, NJ – November 19, 2021 – Ferrari (NYSE: RACE) is recalling 9,985 cars whose brakes may fail, increasing the risk of a crash. The following sports cars are part of this recall:

  • 2010 – 2015 Ferrari 458 Italia
  • 2014  – 2015 Ferrari 458 Speciale
  • 2012 – 2015 Ferrari 458 Spider
  • 2016 – 2019 Ferrari 488 GTB
  • 2018 Ferrari 488 Spider
  • 2015 Ferrari 458 Speciale Aperta

Recall summary

Similar to most other road vehicles, these Ferrari cars have a brake booster which enhances braking capabilities.

The booster in the recalled vehicles may develop a leak, allowing the brake fluid to escape. If left unchecked, the brake fluid level may become too low, “resulting in a loss of braking ability.”

Background of the recall

Ferrari states that it is not completely sure of the number of vehicles that are affected by this recall nor the root cause.

The component in question is the master cylinder assembly, which has the brake booster inside it, with part number 000244010.

Recall risks

If the driver is unable to brake, the risk of an accident is very high.

Warning signs

If the level of brake fluid within its reservoir falls below 50%, the driver will see the following message on the dash, “Brake fluid level low. Go to dealer slowly” and will hear the corresponding audio alert.

If you receive this message, pull over and have your vehicle towed to the nearest Ferrari service.

Other Ferrari recalls

Earlier model-years of some of the cars included in this recall are under an investigation by the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration (NHTSA) because of fuel leaks out of the cars’ capless fuel fillers, as reported.

The 2019 GTB was among cars recalled in February of 2019 because of a risk of  a fuel leak, which increased the risk of a fire.

The repair

Notifications with more information about the recall and next steps will be sent to vehicle owners around December 21, 2021.

Stellantis is recalling RAM trucks over risk of fire

Auburn Hills, MI  – November 14, 2021 – Stellantis (NYSE: STLA), which owns the Dodge brand, is recalling 131,177 of their heavy-duty pickup trucks that may develop an electrical fire inside the engine compartment. This increases the risk of injury.

This recall is an expansion of a previous recall, comes on the back of multiple fires and customer complaints and includes the following vehicles with Cummins 6.7L Turbo Diesel engine :

  • 2021 Ram 2500
  • 2022 Ram 2500
  • 2021 Ram 3500
  • 2022 Ram 3500
  • 2021 Ram 4500
  • 2022 Ram 4500
  • 2021 Ram 5500
  • 2022 Ram 5500

Recall summary

The engines of the vehicles that are part of this Ram truck recall have an electrical heater that warms up the air coming into the engine to help it get to running temperatures faster. The heater is controlled by an electrical relay, or a switch.

Recalled vehicles’ switches may short circuit and overheat, causing a fire inside the engine compartment. This can happen both while driving as well as when the vehicle is parked and the engine is turned off.

The component in question is a solid-state intake heater grid relay, with part number 68444169AA.

Background of the recall

This recall appears to be an expansion of a smaller recall conducted in April. The first recall involved the relay with the same part number and affected about 19,000 of the 2021 RAM trucks, as reported. Both relays were made by German manufacturer Eberspaecher. The manufacturer became aware of at least eight fires leading up to the recall.

Recall risks

The flames and smoke may distract the driver and other motorists, which may lead to a crash. In addition, the driver may fail to stop the vehicle in time for its occupants to leave it in a safe manner. Both increase the risk of an injury or an accident.

Safety tips

Park your vehicle away from buildings and other vehicles until the final repair is completed.

For tips on what to do if your vehicle catches fire, please read this article relating to car fire safety.

Other Ram recalls

Mazda recalls vehicles with seats that may slide forward

Washington, D.C.  – November 13, 2021 – Mazda (OTCMKTS: MZDAY) is recalling 8,648 SUVs whose second-row seats may slide forward during a crash. This increases the risk of an injury.

This recall is affecting the following vehicles:

  • 2020 Mazda CX-9
  • 2021 Mazda CX-9

Recall summary

Mazda CX-9 SUVs have second-row “60/40 split bench” seats that allow passengers to adjust their position by sliding them forward or backward.  Split bench is a common seat layout that typically has one smaller and one larger seat which accommodates two people.

Due to a supplier error, the sliding mechanism in the affected vehicles may not lock itself firmly into position in certain situations.  As a result, the second-row seat may not be adequately secured and could slide forward in a collision

The affected component is left-side second-row seats with part numbers including TK48-57-25XL and TM53-57-25XD.

Recall risks

A seat that moves forward during a collision would cause the seat belt to press against the passenger more firmly. The resulting higher forces may increase the risk of an injury.

Other Mazda CX-9 recalls

At this time, this is the only Mazda CX-9 recall that is affecting these particular models. In addition, the Mazda CX-9 crash test rating is among the highest in its class, which ensures excellent passenger safety

This month, over 13,000 MazdaSpeed6 and Mazda RX-8 were recalled due to a fuel leak from a cracked fuel pump mount.

The repair

To fix the issue, dealers will replace the affected seat components with improved versions. Notifications about the repair will be sent to vehicle owners around November 26, 2021.

Is your vehicle a part of this recall?

This recall includes more than 8,000 Mazda CX-9 SUVs. To do a Mazda recall check and see if yours is one of them, use MotorSafety’s free vehicle lookup tool.

Stellantis recalls vehicles over high beam activation issue

Auburn Hills, MI   –  November 13, 2021 – Stellantis (NYSE: STLA), which owns the Jeep brand, is recalling 7,082 of their 2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee L SUVs, whose high beams may be difficult to activate. The issue reduces visibility and increases the risk of an accident.

Recall summary

This Stellantis recall affects certain Jeep Grand Cherokees that are not equipped with “automatic high beams” which turn on and off by themselves as needed.

In these vehicles, drivers are not able to activate the high beams when the light switch is in the “Auto” position. The high beams can only be selected with the headlights in the “On” position. If the driver is not aware of that, he or she may have a hard time activating the high beams.

This issue was caused by an oversight during vehicle programming and affects “Body Controller Modules” with part number 68374988AA.

Recall risks

Drivers may have limited visibility with the Jeep auto high beams not working. This may prevent them from noticing potential obstacles and result in a crash, which increases the risk of an accident or injury.

Other Stellantis recalls

The 2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee L cars are subject to another recall that was started in October because of faulty rearview cameras, as reported. It is not clear if there is any overlap between the two recalls.

The repair

Dealers will reprogram the module with updated software to correct this Jeep Grand Cherokee automatic high beams’ issue. Notifications about the repair will be sent to vehicle owners around December 3, 2021.

Is your vehicle part of this recall?

This Jeep Grand Cherokee recall includes more than 7,000 vehicles. Do a Jeep recall check to see if yours is one of them by using  MotorSafety’s free vehicle lookup tool.

Nissan recalls vehicles with loose headrests

Franklin, TN  – October 18, 2021 – Nissan (OTCMKTS: NSANY) is recalling 10,082 2022 Nissan Pathfinder SUVs, whose headrests on third-row seats may detach during a crash, increasing the risk of an injury.

Recall summary

Vehicles that are part of this Nissan recall notice have headrests on their third-row seats that may have not been assembled properly. This happened because their components were misaligned and incorrectly welded during the production process. As a result, the headrest may detach during a crash.

The components in question are central and outside headrests on the third-row seats, with multiple part numbers including 86410 6TA0A and 86480 6TA2C.

Recall risks

A loose headrest will not provide sufficient support to the passenger’s head during a rear-end collision, which increases the risk of an injury.

Warning signs

Owners may notice the headrest moving in an “abnormal” way, which happens because of the excessive play within it.

Other Nissan Pathfinder recalls

Despite being in production for a few months only, the new Nissan Pathfinder is already subject to at least one more recall. It deals with second-row seats, whose backsides may detach from the restraint points during a crash.

The repair

To fix the issue, Nissan authorized dealers will replace all three headrests on third-row seats. Notifications about the repair will be sent to vehicle owners around November 19, 2021.

Nissan is recalling vehicles over risk of seat detachment

Franklin, TN  – October 17, 2021 – Nissan (OTCMKTS: NSANY) is recalling 5,895 2022 Nissan Pathfinder SUVs, whose second-row seats may collapse in a crash, which increases the risk of an injury.

Recall summary

This Nissan recall notice includes vehicles whose second-row seats were not welded properly. In the event of a crash, the backside of the seat may detach from its restraint points

The component in question is the left and right seat frame with multiple part numbers including 88050 6TD4A and 88000 6TF8C.

Recall risks

Seats with backsides that are not fully secured in place may fail to adequately restrain the passengers during a crash. This increases the risk of an injury.

Warning signs

Broken welds may produce a noticeable rattle in the seat frame.

Other Nissan Pathfinder recalls

Although it entered production only a few months ago, the new Nissan Pathfinder is already subject to at least two recalls.  Besides the seat issue, there is also a recent problem with third-row headrests that may detach during a collision

The repair

Nissan authorized dealers replace the seat frame assembly if the welds are broken or cracked. Notifications about the repair will be sent to vehicle owners around November 19, 2021.

Hyundai issues fifth recall over fire risk

Fountain Valley, CA – January 31, 2022 – The U.S. government auto safety regulator, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration  (NHTSA),  is currently conducting an investigation to see if the remedy offered in this recall was adequate. Please bookmark this page and come back for any updates. You can find more information about why this is happening here or use our free vehicle lookup tool to see if your car is part of a recall.

Fountain Valley, CA – October 15, 2021 – Hyundai (OTCMKTS:HYMTF) has announced its fifth recall this year due to the risk of fire. This recall includes 95,515 cars and is caused by “premature wear” of engine components.

Affected vehicles include:

  • 2017 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid
  • 2017 Hyundai Tucson

Recall summary

Connection rods are engine components which help reduce friction between moving parts in the engine. In affected vehicles, these bearings may suffer from “premature wear,” which may cause the engine to stall while driving. In addition, the connection rod can snap and pierce the engine, which results in oil leaks that may cause fire.

All vehicles that are part of this Hyundai recall have a 2.0-liter “Nu” GDI engine made in their plant in Ulsan, South Korea, between May 12, 2016 and December 27, 2017.

Warning signs

Warning signs include a metallic knocking sound and “hesitation” when accelerating. These may be accompanied by illuminated “oil pressure” and “check engine” warning lights on the dashboard, as well as “burning smell, oil leak or smoke.”

To prevent any further damage, the driver should stop the vehicle at the first safe spot and turn off the engine.

Recall risks

Stalling can lead to dangerous situations, especially if it happens in high-speed or dense traffic. A fire inside the engine compartment that occurs while driving has a wide range of potential hazards. Besides the risk of collision, stopping and leaving the vehicle in time may not be possible, which could result in injury or death. There is also a risk of property damage, as the burning vehicle may damage surrounding structures and vehicles.

For tips on what to do in the event of a fire, please refer to the following page.

Other Hyundai recalls

This recall is the newest addition to a long list of fire-related recalls that have been affecting Hyundai and Kia vehicles and is a result of an ongoing investigation into “non-collision” fires by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

Among recent recalls is a Hyundai Sonata recall that happened in December  and was caused by connection rod bearings issues nearly identical to this one. In January, there was another Hyundai Tucson recall concerning fire risk, although that one was caused by a leaking ABS module.

The repair

Dealers will address this problem by inspecting the engine for signs of rod bearing damage and replacing the whole engine if needed. In addition, they will update the control software with one that would detect if engines start producing any unusual vibrations. Notifications about the repair will be  sent to vehicle owners on November 12, 2021.

Ford recalls vehicles with faulty rearview cameras

Dearborn, MI – October 10, 2021 – Ford (NYSE: F) – that owns the Lincoln brand – is recalling 228,297 vehicles whose infotainment system may fail to display the image from the rearview camera. This increases the risk of a crash and injury. Affected vehicles include:

  • 2020 Ford Explorer
  • 2021 Ford Explorer
  • 2020 Lincoln Aviator
  • 2021 Lincoln Aviator
  • 2020 Lincoln Corsair
  • 2021 Lincoln Corsair

Recall summary

Cars that are part of this Ford recall have a SYNC infotainment system that shows a 360° image around the vehicle.  The rearview camera may occasionally fail to display the image, limiting drivers’ visibility while backing up the vehicle

Recall risks

Limited visibility while backing up the vehicle increases the risk of a crash, which can lead to property damage or injury to people behind the car, especially small children.  The risk is even greater when the driver relies solely on the rearview camera when going in reverse. Read more about the history of rearview cameras in our recent article about a similar Stellantis recall.

Other Ford recalls

A wide range of Ford and Lincoln models is having various problems with rearview cameras and other software glitches for some time now. This even caused the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to open an investigation into how the manufacturer handled a recent recall related to the matter.

There were several other Ford Explorer recalls recently as well. In September, for example, over 640,000 2013 – 2017 Ford Explorers were recalled for the fourth time since 2016 due to possible steering loss caused by faulty suspension.

There is also a recent Lincoln Aviator recall, which deals with a wiring issue that could cause electrical fire.

The repair

Ford and Lincoln authorized dealers will fix the problem by updating the software that controls the image processing module (IPMB). Notifications about the repair were sent to vehicle owners from October 7, 2021.

Is your vehicle a part of this recall?

Stellantis recalls Jeep Grand Cherokees over faulty rearview cameras

Auburn Hills, MI  – October 10, 2021 – Stellantis (NYSE: STLA), which owns the Jeep brand, is recalling 56,180 2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee L SUVs with rearview cameras that may fail to display the image. This may result in a crash while reversing, increasing the risk of an injury.

The faulty component is the radio assembly, with part numbers 68426026AD and 68426027AD.

Recall summary

Vehicles that are affected by this Jeep recall have an infotainment system, whose central display reproduces images from the rearview camera. Due to a radio software error, this system may malfunction while shutting itself down. Consequently, there will be no image from the rearview camera when the driver starts the vehicle.

Recall risks

A driver who is reversing a vehicle with a malfunctioning rearview camera may fail to notice a person or an object behind them. This increases the risk of a crash or injury and may even cause accidents with tragic outcomes. Because of this, rearview cameras have been  mandatory on all vehicles since May 2018

Other Jeep and Chrysler recalls

At this time, this is the only Jeep Grand Cherokee recall that is affecting this 2021 model. Last year, however, there was a similar Chrysler recall concerning Dodge Charger Pursuit with rearview cameras that may fail to display an image.

The repair

To fix the issue, dealers will install an updated version of the software that controls radio operation. Notifications about the repair will be sent to vehicle owners around November 10, 2021.

Daimler recalls vehicles over risk of steering loss

Portland, OR – October 8, 2021  – Daimler (NASDAQ:DDAIF), which owns Daimler Trucks North America (DTNA), is recalling 105,183 heavy-duty trucks with steering linkage that may come apart while driving. If this happens, the vehicle will suffer from a complete loss of steering, which increases the risk of a crash and injury.  This recall includes the following vehicles:

  • 2019 Freightliner Cascadia
  • 2020 Freightliner Cascadia
  • 2021 Freightliner Cascadia

Recall summary

On these heavy-duty trucks, the steering assembly is connected to the front wheels with a pair of drag links. These are metal bars with a ball joint at each end that move the wheel left or right as you steer them.

The cause of this deficiency involves the ball joint on the drag link, which may not be sufficiently tightened down.  As a result, it may become loose over time and completely detach from the steering arm

Warning signs

In its initial phases, a loose drag link may cause the vehicle steering to become loose or “off-center.” Additional warning signs may include vibrations at certain speeds and knocking sounds when turning.

Recall risks

A reduction in steering capabilities makes the vehicle less stable or completely unresponsive, dramatically increasing  the chance of a crash or injury. This risk is as severe to the driver and its passengers as it is to other motorists and pedestrians.

Other Freightliner recalls

Daimler’s Freightliner Cascadia series trucks continue to be plagued by a cascade of several recent recalls. Deficiencies range from stalling due to faulty battery cables, to risk of fire from improperly mounted headlights, and most recently, loose steering tie rods – all within the last year.  Owners should be aware that these are separate recalls and the root of the problem is not identical.

The repair

Daimler dealers will solve this problem by inspecting the ball joint and testing if it is tightened to a correct torque. In addition, they will replace the joint if necessary. Notifications about the repair will be sent to vehicle owners on October 31, 2021.
