Fountain Valley, Calif. – June 5, 2017 – Hyundai Motor America has recalled more than 17,000 sport utility vehicles that could contain defective driver-side seatbelts. The campaign affects the 2017 Santa Fe Sport compact SUV, according to the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration. The car maker is unsure what percentage of the vehicles named in the campaign contain the defect. The recall carries the NHTSA serial number 17V365000.

This is the second recall involving the Santa Fe this month, according to The Car Connection. Hyundai issued a voluntary safety recall for more than 437,000 2013-2017 models of the popular SUV, citing the presence of ineffective hood latches.

The Defect
The models involved in this recent campaign could feature driver-side seatbelt assemblies with loose anchor bolts. Westwood, N.J. – June 5, 2017 – BMW of North America has recalled a number of sport utility vehicles with incorrect tire information placards. The campaign affects X5 and X6 models produced between April 1 and April 18, 2017, according to documentation filed with the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration. Washington, D.C. – June 1, 2017 – Mazda North American Operations has recalled more than 35,000 sports cars with defective ball joints. The campaign affects RX-8 sports cars manufactured between April 10, 2003 and May 7, 2004, according to documentation filed with the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration. The Japanese automaker is unsure what percentage of the vehicles named in the recall contain the damaged part.

The Defect
Affected models are equipped with ball joints that have been improperly caulked and can therefore damage the joint socket. This structural instability puts immense pressure on the suspension and can even cause the joint to separate from the socket in affected vehicles that are bearing abnormally large loads. Such an event drastically decreases driveability – a symptom of loss of steering control – and compromises occupant safety.

Timeline of Events
In December 2005, Mazda received a field report from a dealer in the U.S. market mentioning the problem, according to a defect timeline filed with the NHTSA. While the automaker was unable to recover the failed part, it ultimately launched an official investigation to further explore the problem cited in the report. Quality assurance personnel closed the inquiry four months later without identifying the root cause. Mazda continued to monitor field reports to look for additional occurrences. In September 2007, the car maker received a report from the Japanese market in which the driver described losing steering power while racing. QA personnel started an official investigation.

Engineers conducted tests between October and November of that year and determined that heavy loads were to blame in this instance of steering loss, after which Mazda resumed field monitoring. The company received two more reports from Japanese drivers between July and September of 2008, both of which detailed sudden steering failure during racing events. Engineers tested these vehicles and determined that the ball joints in both had fractured while the autos were supporting abnormally large loads. Mazda continued to monitor incoming field reports.

The automaker received another field report during the summer of 2009. While the vehicle addressed in the complaint was not used for racing purposes, it did feature a performance suspension. Engineers determined that this fixture had nothing to do with the steering failure but noted it just the same. From October to December 2009, Mazda received two additional field reports pertaining to vehicles used in competition.

Over the next two years, the number of field reports multiplied, most of which applied to RX-8s involved in racing events. Even so, the automaker did implement design changes in late 2012 to reduce the likelihood of steering loss. It also continued to investigate the problem and collect related field reports, eight of which materialized between 2013 and 2014.

In the spring of 2015, another driver in the Japanese market reported that his race-ready RX-8 had suddenly lost its steering power, forcing Mazda to resume more focused investigative efforts. Then, in June, an owner with no experience on the track filed a field report mentioning the problem. QA personnel for the car maker further analyzed ball joint separation in this non-racing model and restarted monitoring efforts to pinpoint other instances in which overloaded RX-8s used exclusively for commuting suffered steering control loss due to ball joint separation. From July to December 2015, Mazda conducted further tests.

In January 2016, engineers for the car company began considering the possibility that the defect was not the result of race-related stress but a symptom of faulty assembly processes. Two months later, QA personnel conducted detailed examinations of existing production workflows. Between April and August 2016, Mazda continued this work and started developing field screening procedures for RX-8s already on the road. Over the course of September and October, these plans were finalized. By April 2017, engineers at the car company were fairly certain the problem was related to defective parts.

On May 29, 2017, Mazda officials decided to launch a voluntary recall campaign.

The Solution
The automotive organization will order dealers to replace the lower control arms in affected RX-8s with new assemblies containing properly caulked ball joint sockets, free of charge. Dearborn, Mich. – May 24, 2017 – Ford Motor Company has recalled approximately 551 pickup trucks equipped with defective aftermarket door handles, according to a company press release. The campaign affects 2015-2017 F-150 pickups, as well as 2017 F-250 and F-550 models. Approximately 247 of these vehicles came from American dealerships, while the remainder originated from Canadian showrooms.

The Defect
The affected pickups feature aftermarket chrome door handles sourced from third-party parts dealers. Ford recalls thousands of vehicles over weld concerns

 

Dearborn, Mich.—May 24, 2017—In the first of two Ford recalls announced in one statement, the Michigan manufacturer declared that several vehicles would be part of a safety compliance effort for a welding issue. This action concerns three different Ford models, all produced for 2017, and none of the affected vehicles are part of a reported accident or injury because of this concern.

The Defect

The three models involved are the Ford Explorer, F-150 and Super Duty. Occupants could be at possible risk due to improperly welded driver seat back frame, the source said. Between the three of them, all of the 2,418 vehicles that make up this recall account for five different assembly plants from across the country, including locations in Michigan, Illinois and Kentucky.

Last year saw Ford recall a different set of vehicles for welding concerns. According to Carscoops, that action targeted 2014 and 2015 Ford Explorer vehicles with “rear suspension toe links” that were possibly subject to fracture. That recall wasn’t as large, including only 75,364 vehicles, but the manufacturer did say that “one accident and one injury” were traced to this defect, at least at that time of publication.

Auburn Hills, Mich.—May 22, 2017—Structural issues have led to a new Jeep recall this month, with drivers at possible risk of their vehicles suddenly slowing or failing to park. According to CNet, the recall isn’t scheduled to begin until next month but could affect 1,178 Compass vehicles with the model year of 2017.

The Defect

The source said that these vehicles may not have axles in the correct place, potentially leading to transmission connection problems. Though it could manifest in different ways, the axle that fails to connect with the rest of the transmission could make it difficult to operate the vehicle normally, making basic functions involving the car difficult.

Timeline of Events

  • February 2017: The 2017 Jeep Compass first became available for sale, according to Forbes.
  • May 2017: Inventory availability increased, the source said, while the CNet piece appeared on May 22.

Mitsubishi recalls Outlander and Outlander Sport vehicles for door problems [Video]

Cypress, Calif.—April 17, 2017—The door latches in more than 35,000  Mitsubishi vehicles could open unexpectedly, according to one recall. This recall will address these improperly produced latches, which are reportedly more dangerous in high temperatures.

All together the recall includes two 2016 models: the Mitsubishi Outlander and Mitsubishi Outlander Sport. The earliest of these vehicles was produced on May 11, 2015, and Ansei Corporation is the listed supplier for these components. This company is based in Japan, which is also where the first report connected to this possible issue stemmed from, although no accidents were traced to this defect as of April 6.

The official Part 573 Safety Recall Report did not list an owner or dealer notification date. It did say that the response will urge owners to replace the faulty latches.

Volkswagen recalls vehicles for defective heat shield

 

Auburn Hills, Mich.—May 23, 2017—Improperly short heat shields in some Volkswagen Passat vehicles could leave some of these autos at risk of fire depending on the conditions on the right half shaft. The recall effort, is known as #17V309000 and includes 84,262 vehicles in the U.S. as well, as the official NHTSA report said.

The Defect

Normally, the heat shield in these affected vehicles would keep the right half-shaft grease boot cool and safe from possible flammability. Without the proper covering, grease could leak onto one of multiple possible heat sources and increase the risk of a fire starting. The report mentioned that the upper boost hoses in these vehicles could fail as well, triggering “a flashing glow plug light.”

Timeline of Events

  • April 11, 2011- July 25, 2014: These were the original production dates for the affected range of vehicles.
  • July 2016-Feb. 2017: The analysis of the problem began and continued during this time, eventually leading to the ultimate decision on whether or not the matter involved a defect.

The Resolution

The replacement boost hose, in particular, dates back to a part introduced in 2012, and the hose has a strengthened middle layer. July 14, 2012, was the listed date when the new boost hose was introduced. All models in that range beforehand were reportedly at higher risk, though the report said that 100 percent of the recalled population is estimated to have the defect.

Auburn Hills, Mich. – May 12, 2017 – Fiat Chrysler Automobiles has recalled more than 1.25 million trucks due to a serious software error, according to The New York Times. The recall affects Ram 1500 and 2500 pickups produced between 2013 and 2016, as well as Ram 3500 pickups assembled between 2014 and 2016. Ram pickup trucks are the company’s best-selling vehicles, accounting for roughly 25 percent of all of the company’s sales in the U.S.

More than 1 million of the affected trucks were sold in the U.S. Roughly 216,000 came from dealerships in Canada, while just over 21,000 originated from Mexican dealers.

The Defect
Models named in the recall are equipped with faulty software that switches off airbags and seatbelt tension assemblies, presenting serious risks to both drivers and passengers. In fact, multiple accidents involving Ram owners precipitated the recall, the Los Angeles Times reported. FCA has received reports of at least one fatality and two injuries directly linked the software error.
