Nissan recalls trucks and SUVs whose rearview cameras may freeze up

Franklin, TN – November 3, 2022 – Nissan (OTCMKTS:NSANY) is recalling 27,344 trucks and SUVs whose rearview cameras may fail to show an image. This increases the risk of a crash while backing up and a consequent injury.

The following models are affected by this recall:

  • 2022 Nissan Frontier
  • 2022 Nissan Titan 
  • 2022 Nissan Titan XD
  • 2021 – 2022 Nissan Rogue

Recall summary

All listed vehicles are fitted with a rearview camera, as mandated by current road regulations. But on affected cars, due to a software error, the display on the central console may fail to show an image from this camera.

The component causing this recall is the In-Vehicle Infotainment (IVI) system, with different part numbers including 25915 9FY1D and 2591A 6RR1A. 

Recall risks

If unable to see what’s behind the vehicle when backing up, the driver may crash into other vehicles or pedestrians, increasing the risk of an injury. 

Other Nissan recalls

Among previous Nissan Rogue recalls, the one caused by jammed seat belts, which happened in October 2022, is the latest. 

In addition, there were several Nissan Titan recalls during the past few months. One that happened in July 2022 was caused by defective transmissions that may slip out of Park. 

Th repair

The manufacturer will fix the issue by releasing a software update, which will be done “over-the-air”. This means owners won’t have to take their cars to their dealers. And, as always, the repair will be free of charge. 

Vehicle owners will be notified on November 18, 2022.

Stellantis recalls Jeep, RAM vehicles over fuel pump failure, stall risk

Auburn Hills, MI – November 2, 2022 – Stellantis (NYSE:STLA), which owns the Jeep and RAM brands, is recalling 60,413 vehicles over premature failure of the high-pressure fuel pump. This could lead to the vehicle stalling while in traffic, upping the risk of an accident.

The recall comes on the heels of 250 driver complaints and covers the following models: 

  • 2021 – 2022 Jeep Gladiator
  • 2020 – 2022 Jeep Wrangler
  • 2020 – 2022 RAM 1500

Recall summary

The fuel pump moves the fuel from the vehicle’s gas tank to the engine, where it is used for combustion that powers the vehicle’s movement. In the affected vehicles with Jeep fuel pump issues, the pump could fail prematurely. Debris from failed components could get into the fuel system and prevent the fuel from reaching the engine.

This recall applies to vehicles with a 3.0 liter diesel engine.

The component involved in this recall is the high-pressure fuel pump (HPFP), with part number 68211269AA.

Background of the recall

The recall comes on the back of “22 customer assistance records, 205 warranty claims, and 33 field reports” received between mid-2020 and late September of 2022. No injuries or accidents have been reported because of the issue.

Recall risks

If the fuel fails to reach the engine, “fuel starvation” will occur. This may result in a loss of power, increasing the chances that the vehicle will crash. 

Warning signs

Drivers may notice the Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) or the Service Electronic Throttle Control indicator – which looks like a lighting bolt – turning on in the instrument panel. There may also be excessive noise or a fuel leak coming from the HPFP.

 Other Jeep and RAM truck recalls

A number of 2014-2019 RAM 1500s and 2014-2020 Jeep Grand Cherokee SUVs were recalled in June 2022. This recall, which affected 138,645 vehicles in all, was also in response to a defect with the high-pressure fuel pump.

As part of another Fiat Chrysler recall, Stellantis recalled 4,907 RAM pickup trucks in October 2022 over an Engine Control Module (ECM) component that may have been fitted incorrectly. This could cause the vehicle to stall. 

The repair

Dealers will inspect and replace the affected fuel system components free of charge. Stellantis will reimburse owners who paid for repairs prior to the issuance of the recall order.

Stellantis recalls Jeep Wrangler hybrids over power loss

Auburn Hills, MI – November 1, 2022 – Stellantis (NYSE:STLA), which owns the Chrysler and Jeep brands, is recalling 13,722 2022 – 2023 Jeep Wrangler Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEVs) over a problem that could result in the vehicle stalling without warning. This ups the risk of a crash and injury.

Recall summary

Electrical fuses are safety devices that protect equipment against too much electric current. In the event of a power surge or overheating, part of the fuse melts, breaking the circuit. Fuses are especially important in plug-in hybrid vehicles, which use high-voltage batteries.

In the affected vehicles, a fuse in the battery assembly is secured with the wrong fasteners. These fasteners create higher-than-normal electrical resistance, generating heat and potentially causing the fuse to fail. If the fuse fails, the vehicle will lose power to the engine.

The component involved in this recall is the hybrid battery pack assembly, with part number 05193168AH.

Recall risks

Loss of power while driving dramatically augments the risk of a crash.

Warning signs

A Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) may turn on in the instrument panel, and the driver may notice a noise coming from the high-voltage battery pack assembly or a change in the vehicle’s drivability.

Other Jeep recalls

In December 2021, Stellantis issued a recall for 2,903 2021-2022 Jeep Wrangler PHEVs on account of a faulty odometer. Without a way to monitor the vehicle’s mileage, owners may miss out on important maintenance schedules.

In June 2022, certain 2014-2020 Jeep Grand Cherokee units were included in a recall issued by Stellantis over a defect with the high-pressure fuel pump. This could increase the chances of the vehicle stalling while in operation, leading to a crash.

The repair

Dealers will inspect the fuse fasteners on the affected vehicles and replace the fuse assembly if necessary. If charring or discoloration is observed, the high-voltage battery pack assembly will be replaced. The remedy will be done free of charge, and Stellantis will reimburse owners who paid for repairs prior to the issuance of the Jeep Wrangler recalls.

Affected owners will be notified on or around December 2, 2022.

Dearborn, MI – October 31, 2022 – In 2022, Ford (NYSE:F) has been subject to 57 recalls, affecting 7.5 million vehicles. In addition to the recalls, Ford has faced one lawsuit and three investigations.

Lawsuit

In late July, Ford was sued over 2021 Lincoln Navigator and Expedition SUVs that may catch fire. Owners of the vehicles argued that Ford “either knew or should have known” about the defect relating to more than 66,000 vehicles well before the recall was issued.

Investigations  

The company is subject to three investigations, which could result in additional recalls.

In the beginning of September, the U.S government auto safety regulator – the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) – opened an investigation into brake fluid leaks affecting 2013-2018 Ford Fusion and Lincoln MKZ vehicles. Approximately 1.73 million vehicles could be recalled as a result.

In mid-June, a Ford investigation was launched after a dealer allegedly sold a 2021 Ford Escape compact crossover SUV, which was part of a recall at the time. The sale of a car that is being recalled is illegal.

Prior to that in early June, the regulator launched an investigation into 25,538 2021 Ford Bronco vehicles that may stall. 

Recalls

Ford fire risk recalls

A total of 708,788 Ford vehicles were recalled due to fire risk.  

In April, 345,451 Escape and Bronco Sport SUVs were recalled because of an engine fault that could lead to a fire. This was prompted by at least 21 warranty claims and reports of fire. 

In early September, 198,482 vehicles were recalled over a faulty motor, indicated by the smell of something burning or smoke emerging from the instrument panel vents.

Other fire-related Ford recalls include one in July affecting 100,689 vehicles, an SUV recall affecting 39,013 vehicles, a truck recall affecting 19,697 vehicles, as well as a Maverick pickup truck recall affecting 5,456 vehicles.

Ford rollaway issues

Several recalls also transpired due to the risk of cars rolling away into the oncoming traffic.

The biggest Ford recall this year was in mid-June. The recall affected 2.9 million vehicles and was prompted by several reports of property damage and injuries caused by the issue. 

Prior to that in April, 391,836 vehicles had a trailer brakes issue, increasing the stopping distance and potentially causing harm. 

Ford truck recalls

One of the most recent Ford truck recalls was in August, where 58,203 F-150 trucks had a rollaway and stalling issue. This was attributed to a fracture in the driveshaft, which transfers engine power to the wheels.

In May, Ford F-Series trucks were recalled due to an issue with the transmission, which could lead to the subject vehicles rolling away when parked. This recall affected 23,165 heavy duty trucks.

Ford Bronco recalls

In July, 63,294 Ford Bronco and Ranger vehicles were recalled over windshields that could detach. The cause of the issue was yet to be confirmed. 

Another one of this year’s Ford Bronco recalls was in June, where 53,103 vehicles were recalled over faulty child lock concerns.

Dearborn, MI – October 30, 2022 – Ford (NYSE:F) is recalling 11,098 2022 Ford Maverick pickup trucks whose brake lights may light up unexpectedly, increasing the risk of a crash.

Recall summary

In the subject vehicles, the brake lights may illuminate even if the brakes are not in use due to a software error in the anti-lock brake system (ABS). The ABS is a safety system which prevents skidding and allows the driver to have better control of the vehicle.

The component in question is the ABS Module Software, with part numbers NZ6C-2B373-C and NZ6C-2D053-C. 

Recall risks

Unintended illumination of the brake lights may confuse other drivers, augmenting the risk of an accident.

Other recent Ford recalls

Earlier this month, Ford recalled more than 86,000 vehicles due to flickering parking lights, as reported.

Prior to that in September, the U.S. government launched an investigation that could lead to one of the latest Ford brake recalls. Over 1.7 million Ford Fusion and Lincoln MKZ vehicles are being investigated due to a brake fluid leak.

One of the most recent 2022 Ford Maverick recalls was in July, where more than 100,00 hybrid SUVs were recalled due to the risk of fire.

The repair

To address the Ford ABS issues, owners will be able to take their vehicles to a Ford or Lincoln dealer for an ABS software update at no cost. Owners will be notified about the repair program between November 14, 2022 and November 18, 2022.

Daimler recalls school buses over separating roofs

Portland, OR – October 29, 2022 – Daimler (OTCMKTS:DMLRY), which owns Daimler Trucks North America (DTNA), is issuing a recall for 17,613 school buses with weak roof joints, which could lead to these roofs separating in the event of a crash. 

The recall covers the following models: 

  • 2011 – 2023 DTNA Thomas Built Buses Saf-T-Liner EFX 
  • 2011 – 2023 DTNA Thomas Built Buses Saf-T-Liner HDX 

Recall summary

On the affected school buses, the exterior roof panel may not have been attached securely enough during manufacturing, due to improperly applied adhesive.

The component involved in this recall is the roof sheet panel with part numbers 140599, 56000857, 56000896 and 56001211.

Recall risks

A roof panel that is insufficiently secured to the bus is more likely to come off in a crash, increasing the risk of injury to occupants.

Other school bus recalls

In October 2022, Daimler recalled 7,601 2011 – 2021 DTNA Thomas Built Buses Saf-T Liner HDX school buses over front seat barriers that did not pass crash tests, which could present an increased risk of injury in a crash. 

In June 2022, Navistar issued a recall and do-not-drive notice for 5,173 IC buses whose steering wheels could loosen or detach, increasing the risk of a crash and injury.

The 2023 DTNA Thomas Built EFX Saf-T-Liner was included in a March 2022 recall over improperly bolted seats. The 2023 DTNA Thomas Built HDX Saf-T-Liner was subject to four additional recalls in 2022, with risks including fire and stalling.

The repair

Daimler Truck North America–authorized service facilities will secure the roof panel with additional mechanical fasteners. This will be done free of charge. DTNA will reimburse owners who paid for these repairs before the recall was announced.   

 Affected owners will be notified on or around December 10, 2022.

Jacksonville, FL – October 28, 2022 – Mercedes-Benz (OTCMKTS:MBGYY) is issuing a recall for 59,574 SUVs over faulty locks on the third-row seat backs, which could lead to injury in the event of a crash. 

The recall covers the following models: 

  • 2021 Mercedes-Benz AMG GLS63
  • 2020 – 2022 Mercedes-Benz GLS 450
  • 2020 – 2022 Mercedes-Benz GLS 580

Recall summary

Seat back locks secure seat backs in place and prevent them from unintentionally moving forward when an accident occurs. In the affected models, locks on the third-row seats could fail when the vehicle is involved in a crash due to a supplier error.

The component involved in this recall is the seat backrest frame located in the Mercedes-Benz third row seats, with part numbers A1679301702 and A1679301802. 

Recall risks

When a crash happens, a defective seat lock could cause the seat back to forcefully fold forward, increasing the occupant’s risk of injury. 

Other Mercedes-Benz AMG recalls

In May 2022, Mercedes-Benz issued a recall for 21,306 mild-hybrid vehicles over a loose electrical connection under the front passenger seat, which presents a higher risk of overheating and fire.

In July 2022, the automaker issued another recall for 8,530 cars over a software issue on the rearview camera that could prevent it from displaying an image on the dashboard monitor. This reduces the driver’s view of the area behind the vehicle, increasing the risk of an accident.

The repair

Owners can bring affected vehicles to an authorized Mercedes-Benz dealer, who will check the third-row seat back locking mechanisms and, if necessary, replace the seat back. This will be done at no cost to the owner.

 Affected owners will be notified on or around November 29, 2022.

Jacksonville, FL – October 27, 2022 – Mercedes-Benz (OTCMKTS:MBGYY) is recalling 19,698 vehicles because the 12-volt battery located in the trunk may not be properly secured. In a crash, the battery could come loose, disabling some safety functions and increasing the risk of injury.

The recall includes the following vehicles:

Recall summary

The vehicles involved in this recall have a 12-volt battery located in the spare wheel well in the trunk that powers essential safety features. In the subject vehicles, this battery may not be properly secured, meaning that it may move and potentially disconnect in a crash.

The component in question is the Mercedes-Benz 12 volt battery, with part numbers A0019827908 and A0009825010.

Recall risks

If the battery disconnects during a crash, certain post-crash safety features may fail. These include the emergency call (eCall) system, which contacts emergency services in the event of a collision; hazard warning lights, which make a disabled vehicle more visible; and electric seat adjustment and automatically unlocking doors, which make it easier for occupants to get out of the vehicle. Without these features, passengers are at greater risk of injury after the crash occurs.

Other recent Mercedes-Benz recalls

Other recent Mercedes-Benz recalls include one in August in which nearly 30,000 vehicles were recalled over a fault with the electrical system that could cause a fire.

In late September, 161,000 vehicles were recalled for trim bars that could detach while the vehicle is in motion, causing a road hazard.

The repair

To address this Mercedes-Benz electrical issue, owners can take their vehicles to a Mercedes-Benz dealer for additional mounting support to be installed at no cost.

Owners will be notified of the repair program by November 29, 2022.

Recall summary

The dashboard screen on the affected models may fail to display the rearview camera image when Reverse gear is engaged, showing only a blank screen. In certain situations, the dashboard main unit could malfunction, leading to no image being shown.

Other Audi recalls

In September 2022, Volkswagen issued a recall for 13,004 2021-2022 Audi Q3 SUVs over a damaged fuel tank vent pipe that could lead to fuel spills and prevent the vehicle’s fuel tank from being filled.

In December 2021, Volkswagen recalled 288,991 2018-2022 Audi Q5 and SQ5 SUVs over gateway control modules that could sustain water damage, leading the engine to lose power, increasing the risk of accidents.

The repair

Dealers will fix these Audi software issues by updating the infotainment software on the affected vehicles at no cost to owners.

 Affected owners will be notified on or around December 2, 2022.

Rivian recalls vehicles over faulty steering

Plymouth, MI – October 25, 2022 – Rivian (NYSE:RIVN), an electric vehicle company founded in 2009, is issuing a recall for 12,212 vehicles over improperly tightened steering fasteners on the wheels. These could affect the vehicle’s maneuverability, resulting in a higher risk of an accident.

The recall covers the following models:

  • 2022 Rivian R1T pickup truck
  • 2022 Rivian R1S SUV
  • 2022 Rivian EDV delivery vehicle

The 2022 model year was the first for the company, and nearly all vehicles produced by Rivian so far are affected by this recall.

Recall summary

The vehicle’s steering system uses steering knuckles that allow the wheels to turn when the steering wheel is rotated left or right. The knuckles are connected to the vehicle’s frame by a part called the front upper control arm. A bolt called the steering knuckle fastener joins these two components to ensure that the vehicle’s steering remains within the proper angles

In the affected models, the fastener may not have been sufficiently tightened. This could result in the bolt coming loose while the vehicle is in operation. 

Recall risks

If the fastener comes loose from the steering assembly, the front wheel could end up being misaligned or even separated from the vehicle. This could make the driver lose steering control of the vehicle, resulting in an accident.

Warning signs 

Drivers of the affected vehicles may observe higher than normal noise, vibration and harshness coming from the front suspension. They might also notice changes in steering feel or performance.

The repair

To address this Rivian steering issue, dealers will inspect the steering system on the affected vehicles and adequately tighten the knuckle fasteners. They will also replace steering components as necessary. There will be no charge for these repairs, and Rivian will reimburse owners who have had such repairs made prior to the recall announcement.

 Affected owners will be notified on or around November 24, 2022.
