Some Ford Transit Seat Belt Buckles Might Fail to Latch

Dearborn, MI — March 3, 2016 — As part of a pair of recent recalls, Ford Motor Company recently announced possible safety risks connected to Transit vehicles produced between 2014 and 2016, with the 2015 and 2016 model years.

“No injuries have been connected to this issue.”

Across the entire North American continent, approximately 51,470 of these vehicles may contain vulnerable seat belt buckles. The vehicles were manufactured at the same assembly plant in Kansas City. In a press release on the new Ford recalls, the manufacturer stated that dealers will inspect and repair the faulty buckles, replacing them if needed.

While no injuries have been connected to this issue, the press release did explain the possible danger to occupants posed by this defect.

“The rear seat belt buckles are being damaged when heavy objects are placed on top of them, which could cause the buckle not to latch completely, increasing the risk of injury in a crash,” the release said. The same statement also referenced a recall for 3,700 Ford F-150 trucks, most of which are in the United States as well. A seat massage function could disable the airbag system in the passenger seat. Dealers will address this issue by updating the module software to fix the vehicle’s classification systems.

These recent Ford recalls come after a previous action targeting 2015 Transits for a seat belt assembly issue. The belts required a Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard violation because they didn’t bear the correct labels, which normally list the belt model and model year.

This represented a risk to owner safety because it made it potentially difficult for users to read crucial model information on the belt itself. The manufacturer officially launched this earlier recall on June 12, 2015 for fewer than 50 units.

New Death Leads to Ford Ranger Recall

Dearborn, MI — February 04, 2016 — In a continuation of the Takata airbag recalls, Ford is recalling 361,692 vehicles equipped with the potentially dangerous airbags. The recall includes 2004-2006 Ford Rangers.

Recall summary

As a chronology document from Ford notes, a tenth death was recently connected to the inflator issue after a 52-year-old man from South Carolina was struck by shrapnel from the exploding airbag inflator canister. While the root cause of the possible defects in these vehicles is not known, the source says that driver-side airbag inflators could rupture in a crash after “excessive internal pressure.” Owners are instructed to take their vehicles to the nearest dealer to have the inflator replaced. The vehicles included in this recall were manufactured as far back as March 24, 2003.

“On January 22, 2016, Ford participated in a vehicle inspection coordinated by NHTSA’s Special Crash Investigation team and observed an inflator anomaly in this vehicle,” this statement reads. “NHTSA requested that Ford file a defect notification based on a defect notification filed by Takata.”

The document notes that Takata had previously tested more than 1,940 airbag inflators “without incident” for vehicles in the 2004 and 2005 model year ranges.

The repair

Ford will notify owners included in this recall beginning March 7. The dealer notification date was scheduled for January 26. The recalled vehicles will receive an “interim repair”⏤essentially the same Takata airbag, but not as old, so less of a risk⏤and will eventually be replaced with an entirely different airbag altogether.

Is your vehicle part of the recall?

Over 360,000 Ford Rangers were originally part of this recall. As of July 28, 2017, only 528 cars had gotten an “interim” airbag installed. On December 11, 2017, the final repair became available. As of April 9, 2021 – the last date information was available – 193,653 airbags had been replaced. To see if your car still needs to be repaired, use MotorSafety’s free lookup tool.

Hundreds of Thousands of Ford and Mercury Vehicles Recalled for Lighting Problems

Dearborn, MI — January 18, 2016 — Both Ford Crown Victoria and Mercury Grand Marquis vehicles with model years between 2003 and 2005 are part of a new recall, begun late last month, in response to possible problems with the lighting control module. A total of 296,004 vehicles are potentially involved with this flaw, which could leave drivers without proper lighting while the vehicle is in operation.

The components come from supplier Continental Automotive Systems, Inc.

The Part 573 Safety Recall Report released by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration explains why the module could fail. According to this document, the problem could stem from improper circuit soldering on different terminals. Although this condition will affect the headlights, it won’t necessarily impact other lighting functions in the vehicle. The components come from supplier Continental Automotive Systems, Inc.

“These solder joints may fatigue crack caused by repeated thermal cycling and/or vibration that can interrupt power to the headlights,” it reads. “The condition could be exacerbated by an insufficient amount of solder, reducing the adhesion between the solder and the terminal. Cracked solder joints on the circuit board of the LCM may result in loss of headlights while driving.”

The report also states that there have been 11 minor accidents and a single possible injury. Ford or Lincoln dealers are instructed to replace the defective modules free of charge. These recent Ford recalls come after previous investigations, closed in 2009, which determined the defects did not pose any risk to vehicle occupants. In April, 2014, the warranty for the module was extended to 15 years or 250,000 miles, the report also stated.

Ford Recalls Vehicles with Possible Fuel Tank Cracks

A new Ford recall addresses possible fuel tank problems in Fusion and Mercury Milan vehicles. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety administration, cars built as recently as 2011 could develop cracks in their fuel tanks. No related accidents have yet been reported.

This is because faulty canister purge valves, or CPV’s, could change the pressure in the fuel tank, causing a fracture. This could in turn lead to a dangerous fuel leak and fire hazard for owners. Although the leaks were sighted earlier this year, the report date is November 20.

More than 411,200 units are thought to be at risk. Dealers will inspect the affected vehicles and replace both the CPV and the tank, if needed, at no cost to the owner.

Ford Announces Fusion and Milan Recall for Fuel Tank Problems

Dearborn, MI — December 03, 2015 — In a new press release, Ford Motor Company announced a recall for a pair of models produced at its Hermosillo Assembly Plant. According to this statement, the recall applies to Ford Fusion and Mercury Milan vehicles: although they have model years ranging between 2010 and 2011, the manufacture dates range as far back as July, 2008. More than 411,200 vehicles in the United States alone are subject to this action.

In total, the entire recall includes 451,865 cars across North America, with most of the units found in the U.S. The manufacturer is concerned about possible fuel leaks in these vehicles, and states that affected models could be liable to dangerous cracks in the fuel tanks, leading to an increased safety risk.

“Some of these vehicles might have a canister purge valve that does not work properly, causing internal pressure changes inside the fuel tank,” the source said. “Repeated pressure changes inside the tank could result in a crack on the top of the tank, possibly allowing fuel to leak. A fuel leak in the presence of an ignition source can lead to a fire.” The remedy may require dealers to replace the fuel tank entirely, but only after inspecting it first.

In the same release, Ford also announced a separate recall for 13 F-650 autos produced between this July and September. The mechanism that positions these vehicles in “park” could theoretically break, so the manufacturer has called for dealers to replace affected steering columns as a remedy.

Earlier this year, a different series of Ford recalls targeted Fusion and Milan models, among others, for steering motor sensor difficulties.

Mustang seatbelt recall set to begin in December [Video]

Late last month, Ford announced that it would recall certain Mustangs for seatbelt issues. As Car and Driver reported, this was part of a series of recalls that accounted for nearly 113,000 vehicles. The Mustang seatbelt concern, however, only applies to 1,900 cars.

This recall is scheduled to begin December 14, and will focus on Mustangs produced this September and October, with the model year 2016. These seatbelts reportedly don’t comply with the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard and could fail to properly protect passengers in the event of a crash.

To fix this, dealers are going to overhaul the seatbelts, including the affected child seat tether anchors and the front and rear belt assemblies.

Ford Announces Series of Recalls

Dearborn, MI — October 13, 2015 — Ford has begun the new month with several recalls affecting some of its most visible brands, including the Ford Escape, F-150, Taurus and Explorer models. The manufacturer has currently received a minimal number of reports in response to five different Ford recalls, but dealers are taking action to fix the issues for free.

Ford announced these recalls in one single press release on September 30, explaining the individual conditions that have collectively affected hundreds of thousands of vehicles. While the recalls encompass all of North America, the United States is the source of most of the recovered units.

Model years range as far back as 2001 for the transmission issues associated with Ford Escape and Mercury Mariner vehicles. This particular recall concerns a shift control lever bolt that could be loose. The transmission systems in these vehicles were actually remanufactured between this June and July, and will concern nearly 70 individual autos.

The largest of the five recalls involves a range of 342,271 Ford Windstars produced between 1997 and 2003. These were built at the company’s Oakville Assembly Plant and will have the rear axle replaced if the reinforcement brackets are found to have been installed improperly. The rear axle in these vehicles could fracture despite the effects of a previous recall meant to address this issue by adding safety brackets.

Other issues that prompted this recall include fuel tank noncompliance, adaptive cruise control radar and shift control brackets in stripped chassis vehicles. All told, the combined recalls reportedly involve as many as 380,000 vehicles, according to MLive.

Ford issues a series of recalls

Detroit, MI — September 2, 2015 — According to Trucking Info, Ford will recall more than 182,500 vehicles this year in the United States for a problem related to the instrument clusters onboard. A single recall action centers on two specific brands of vehicles produced by plants in very different locations, one in Spain and one in Kentucky.

All total, the whole recall concerns 203,445 units in North America, specifically the Transit Connect Vans and Escape SUV’s built within the past year. The source says that affected vehicles could trigger a malfunction in multiple systems, including warning chimes. The same article mentions another, comparatively more minor recall for Transit Connect vehicles concerning improperly labeled seatbelts.

While this second action only focuses on a group of fewer than 50 vehicles and hasn’t led to any known damages or injuries, the source says that the belts are still a violation of regulations and need to be replaced.

“These vans, acquired by a single fleet customer, have a special-order front passenger seat belt,” it states. “Though these seat belts work properly, the supplier mislabeled them. The labels don’t include all the information required by federal safety standards.”

Ford has issued other recent recalls for unrelated concerns in their vehicle lines, including a group of 393,623 vehicles with electric power steering problems. As Consumer Affairs reports, this issue requires dealers to investigate the Power Steering Control Module within the cars and replace them accordingly, along with the steering gear as necessary. This recall will take effect at the end of July and apply to several models, including the Lincoln MKS and Ford Taurus.

Issuing recall statements within a tight timeframe will bring consumers and dealers more accurate information about the most recent and pressing manufacturer decisions.

Ford recalls trucks over seatbelt issue

Dearborn, MI — August 19, 2015 — In a new press release, Ford Motor Company recently announced a safety compliance recall that will encompass several thousand vehicles in the United States and Canada. According to this source, the seat belt anchorage defects in certain F-650 and F-750 stem from the Escobedo Assembly Plant where they were put together.

Only 417 of the recalled autos are in Canada: more than 25,940 of them are in the United States, and the model years include 2011, 2012, 2013 and 2015. The affected vehicles were produced between 2011 and 2015, and a proper remedy procedure is reportedly “still being developed” in the wake of the large volume of recalled vehicles.

Though the improper alignment of seat belt systems that prompted this recall has not led to any known incidents yet, the manufacturer stated that the current position in these vehicles does leave them liable for possible injury in certain situations.

“In these vehicles, the front passenger and center seat belts might not be anchored in the correct position relative to the seat, increasing the risk of injury in a crash,” the statement reads. The Detroit News put this action into a greater context by noting that Ford has recalled nearly 4 million total vehicles in more than 20 different recalls. Ford is said to be shifting its production away from this plant.

This compares to the national statistics, which have encompassed 32.4 million vehicles within a series of “nearly 500 campaigns” this year so far. Last year, more than 800 campaigns were issued for a total of nearly 64 million.
