Ford recalls vehicles with possible fuel tank cracks [Video]

A new Ford recall addresses possible fuel tank problems in Fusion and Mercury Milan vehicles. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety administration, cars built as recently as 2011 could develop cracks in their fuel tanks. No related accidents have yet been reported.

This is because faulty canister purge valves, or CPV’s, could change the pressure in the fuel tank, causing a fracture. This could in turn lead to a dangerous fuel leak and fire hazard for owners. Although the leaks were sighted earlier this year, the report date is November 20.

More than 411,200 units are thought to be at risk. Dealers will inspect the affected vehicles and replace both the CPV and the tank, if needed, at no cost to the owner.

Ford Announces Fusion and Milan Recall for Fuel Tank Problems

Dearborn, MI — December 03, 2015 — In a new press release, Ford Motor Company announced a recall for a pair of models produced at its Hermosillo Assembly Plant. According to this statement, the recall applies to Ford Fusion and Mercury Milan vehicles: although they have model years ranging between 2010 and 2011, the manufacture dates range as far back as July, 2008. More than 411,200 vehicles in the United States alone are subject to this action.

In total, the entire recall includes 451,865 cars across North America, with most of the units found in the U.S. The manufacturer is concerned about possible fuel leaks in these vehicles, and states that affected models could be liable to dangerous cracks in the fuel tanks, leading to an increased safety risk.

“Some of these vehicles might have a canister purge valve that does not work properly, causing internal pressure changes inside the fuel tank,” the source said. “Repeated pressure changes inside the tank could result in a crack on the top of the tank, possibly allowing fuel to leak. A fuel leak in the presence of an ignition source can lead to a fire.” The remedy may require dealers to replace the fuel tank entirely, but only after inspecting it first.

In the same release, Ford also announced a separate recall for 13 F-650 autos produced between this July and September. The mechanism that positions these vehicles in “park” could theoretically break, so the manufacturer has called for dealers to replace affected steering columns as a remedy.

Earlier this year, a different series of Ford recalls targeted Fusion and Milan models, among others, for steering motor sensor difficulties.

Mustang seatbelt recall set to begin in December [Video]

Late last month, Ford announced that it would recall certain Mustangs for seatbelt issues. As Car and Driver reported, this was part of a series of recalls that accounted for nearly 113,000 vehicles. The Mustang seatbelt concern, however, only applies to 1,900 cars.

This recall is scheduled to begin December 14, and will focus on Mustangs produced this September and October, with the model year 2016. These seatbelts reportedly don’t comply with the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard and could fail to properly protect passengers in the event of a crash.

To fix this, dealers are going to overhaul the seatbelts, including the affected child seat tether anchors and the front and rear belt assemblies.

Ford Announces Series of Recalls

Dearborn, MI — October 13, 2015 — Ford has begun the new month with several recalls affecting some of its most visible brands, including the Ford Escape, F-150, Taurus and Explorer models. The manufacturer has currently received a minimal number of reports in response to five different Ford recalls, but dealers are taking action to fix the issues for free.

Ford announced these recalls in one single press release on September 30, explaining the individual conditions that have collectively affected hundreds of thousands of vehicles. While the recalls encompass all of North America, the United States is the source of most of the recovered units.

Model years range as far back as 2001 for the transmission issues associated with Ford Escape and Mercury Mariner vehicles. This particular recall concerns a shift control lever bolt that could be loose. The transmission systems in these vehicles were actually remanufactured between this June and July, and will concern nearly 70 individual autos.

The largest of the five recalls involves a range of 342,271 Ford Windstars produced between 1997 and 2003. These were built at the company’s Oakville Assembly Plant and will have the rear axle replaced if the reinforcement brackets are found to have been installed improperly. The rear axle in these vehicles could fracture despite the effects of a previous recall meant to address this issue by adding safety brackets.

Other issues that prompted this recall include fuel tank noncompliance, adaptive cruise control radar and shift control brackets in stripped chassis vehicles. All told, the combined recalls reportedly involve as many as 380,000 vehicles, according to MLive.

Ford issues a series of recalls

Detroit, MI — September 2, 2015 — According to Trucking Info, Ford will recall more than 182,500 vehicles this year in the United States for a problem related to the instrument clusters onboard. A single recall action centers on two specific brands of vehicles produced by plants in very different locations, one in Spain and one in Kentucky.

All total, the whole recall concerns 203,445 units in North America, specifically the Transit Connect Vans and Escape SUV’s built within the past year. The source says that affected vehicles could trigger a malfunction in multiple systems, including warning chimes. The same article mentions another, comparatively more minor recall for Transit Connect vehicles concerning improperly labeled seatbelts.

While this second action only focuses on a group of fewer than 50 vehicles and hasn’t led to any known damages or injuries, the source says that the belts are still a violation of regulations and need to be replaced.

“These vans, acquired by a single fleet customer, have a special-order front passenger seat belt,” it states. “Though these seat belts work properly, the supplier mislabeled them. The labels don’t include all the information required by federal safety standards.”

Ford has issued other recent recalls for unrelated concerns in their vehicle lines, including a group of 393,623 vehicles with electric power steering problems. As Consumer Affairs reports, this issue requires dealers to investigate the Power Steering Control Module within the cars and replace them accordingly, along with the steering gear as necessary. This recall will take effect at the end of July and apply to several models, including the Lincoln MKS and Ford Taurus.

Issuing recall statements within a tight timeframe will bring consumers and dealers more accurate information about the most recent and pressing manufacturer decisions.

Ford recalls trucks over seatbelt issue

Dearborn, MI — August 19, 2015 — In a new press release, Ford Motor Company recently announced a safety compliance recall that will encompass several thousand vehicles in the United States and Canada. According to this source, the seat belt anchorage defects in certain F-650 and F-750 stem from the Escobedo Assembly Plant where they were put together.

Only 417 of the recalled autos are in Canada: more than 25,940 of them are in the United States, and the model years include 2011, 2012, 2013 and 2015. The affected vehicles were produced between 2011 and 2015, and a proper remedy procedure is reportedly “still being developed” in the wake of the large volume of recalled vehicles.

Though the improper alignment of seat belt systems that prompted this recall has not led to any known incidents yet, the manufacturer stated that the current position in these vehicles does leave them liable for possible injury in certain situations.

“In these vehicles, the front passenger and center seat belts might not be anchored in the correct position relative to the seat, increasing the risk of injury in a crash,” the statement reads. The Detroit News put this action into a greater context by noting that Ford has recalled nearly 4 million total vehicles in more than 20 different recalls. Ford is said to be shifting its production away from this plant.

This compares to the national statistics, which have encompassed 32.4 million vehicles within a series of “nearly 500 campaigns” this year so far. Last year, more than 800 campaigns were issued for a total of nearly 64 million.

Parking brake worries lead to new Ford recall

Detroit, MI — July 24, 2015 — Nearly 8,000 vehicles in North America are affected by a new Ford recall that looks to address parking brake concerns. The manufacturer is addressing a series of autos, including Explorers, Tauruses and Lincoln sedans. Carscoops reported on the action, which hopes to remedy a failure that would keep the parking brake from fully engaging.

Most of the vehicles included in this recall are in the United States, while around 800 are in Canada and one solitary vehicle is in Mexico. All of the defects originate from the same Chicago Assembly Plant where these models were first constructed earlier this year.

Though the company has said that no injuries have been reported from this fault yet, the affected vehicles will have their parking brake controls replaced for free after an inspection. In the official press release on the action, Ford provided the details on the individual vehicles being recalled. These include “certain 2015-2016 Ford Explorer, and certain 2015 Taurus and Flex, as well as Lincoln MKS and MKT vehicles.”

“In these vehicles, the parking brake might not engage fully, which is a compliance issue with FMVSS 135 regarding brake systems,” the statement continues. Earlier this month, Ford also issued a recall for hundreds of thousands of different vehicles, also with for the 2015 model year, due to an issue that prevents the engine from turning off, even after the owner has pressed the “stop” button.

All recalls are only as effective as the means of alerting customers and dealers to problems they need to address and the ways to do it. Proper systems for proliferating statements are a crucial first step to compliance and safety.

Ford kicks off July with body control module recall [Video]

July has just begun, and Ford has recalled several models for safety compliance issues.

In a recent press release, the manufacturer announced a recall for around 433,000 vehicles built at its Louisville and Michigan assembly plants between 2014 and 2015. Due to problems with the body control modules in these autos, the engines could possibly run for longer than intended, even after the ignition is turned off.

Ford Focus, C-MAX and Escape vehicles are all subject to this possible flaw, and the majority of the affected units are in the United States. The manufacturer states that dealers will address the problem by updating the software in the module.

More than 12,000 Ford trucks recalled for steering issues

Detroit, MI — June 15, 2015 — Earlier this month, Ford Motor Corporation recalled thousands of vehicles due to a fault that may affect steering. The specific trucks included are F-150’s manufactured this year at its plants in Kansas City or Dearborn.
While the recall extends to all of North America, the company noted that most of the vehicles, 12,328 to be exact, were recalled in the United States, and only 5,600 of the total were actually sold to customers. Only 17 are being recalled in Mexico.

The problem concerns the upper I-shaft in these trucks, which could separate from the vehicle entirely if the rivets attaching it are not held in place. In an official statement, the business goes into further detail about the complications that may arise from this.

“If that happens, it could result in the loss of steering control without warning, increasing the risk of a crash,” it says, referring to the improper rivets. It goes on to point out that “Ford is not aware of any accidents or injuries, but is aware of one report of loss of steering believed to be related to this condition.” Dealers are fixing the problem by replacing the upper I-shaft assembly as needed.

As Automotive News points out, a previous Ford recall related to faulty heat shields also involved trucks assembled in Dearborn and referred to cars made earlier this year. That was part of a series of four recalls addressed in a single statement on the company website.

Understanding the trends in recent recall activity from manufacturers could promote a smarter and more coherent series of recall actions on the part of car dealers. Knowing the areas that are connected to previous recalls may help professionals address the needs of owners better and act on the recall.

Ford issues new pair of recalls for more than 442,000 vehicles

Detroit, MI — May 26, 2015 — Ford announced two new recalls in a single statement issued on May 27. Together, these recalls concern more than 442,000 vehicles across North America, most of which are in the United States, and so far neither of the conditions the company is addressing have resulted in any known injuries, although one has led to four “minor accidents” that could be related to one of the concerns.

Those accidents are attributed to the larger of the two recalls, which includes a group of some 422,800 vehicles for the model years between 2011 and 2013. Affected models include Ford Taurus, Ford Flex, Lincoln MKZ and Mercury Milan automobiles, originating from assembly plants in Chicago, Hermosillo and Oakville. These vehicles are at risk of a electric power steering fault that could suddenly shift steering modes while the vehicle is in use.

The other recall targets a much smaller group of 19,486 2015 Ford Mustangs, specifically those with 2.3 liter engines. The release says that the underbodies of these vehicles are potentially more vulnerable in higher temperatures.

“Prolonged exposure to elevated underbody temperatures might cause degradation of the fuel tank and fuel vapor lines, which could eventually result in a fuel leak,” it says. “In addition, prolonged exposure to elevated underbody temperatures might cause the parking brake cable seals to degrade, potentially affecting parking brake functions.”

In both cases, car dealers will perform the necessary repairs, although the steering issue may require an additional new gear replacement if a simple software fix isn’t enough. The Associated Press reports that 508 related complaints have been traced back to the steering fault, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

With all of the correct recall information in mind, dealers and car owners alike will be able to take the proper action when any significant recall is needed and reduce risk.
