Kia Sedona recalled for opposite flashing turn signal

Irvine, CA – November 7, 2021 – Kia Motors (OTCMKTS:KIMTF) is recalling 88,576 units of the Kia Sedona minivans with faulty turn signals that may flash in the opposite direction. This can result in a collision. Model years involved in this recall include:

  • 2015 Kia Sedona
  • 2016 Kia Sedona
  • 2017 Kia Sedona

The affected component is the “Smart Junction Box” (SJB) with multiple part numbers starting with 91950.

Recall summary

This Kia Sedona minivan recall addresses faulty software that incorrectly interprets which turn signal to activate.

There have been no reports of crashes or injuries stemming from the problem.

Warning signs

In an affected vehicle, the unintended turn signal direction will illuminate on the instrument cluster, notifying the driver of the faulty indication.

Recall risks

An inoperable or incorrect turn signal can confuse drivers and pedestrians around you, increasing the risk of an accident.

Other Kia and Hyundai recalls

Hyundai Sonata vehicles were also recalled earlier this week over turn signal problems.

The 2020 Kia Sedona was recalled last month to address a potential fire hazard caused by a loose nut on the alternator.

The last 2016 Kia Sedona recall was conducted in 2019 because of a faulty “occupant detection harness.” The harness may break and fail to detect that there is a child in the front seat in the event of a crash. This may lead to the airbags being deployed and result in an injury to the child.

The repair

Dealers will update the software on the junction box to resolve the issue. Kia will notify affected owners on November 12, 2021 and will reimburse any repair expenses incurred prior to the recall.

Tesla recalls cars that may brake on their own

Palo Alto, CA – November 6, 2021 – Tesla (NASDAQ:TSLA) has recalled 11,704 cars that may brake unexpectedly or issue a false “collision warning.” This increases the risk of a crash.

The recall is  limited to “full-self driving” cars – that are currently in beta –and includes the following electric cars:

  • 2017 – 2021 Tesla Model 3
  • 2017 – 2021 Tesla Model S
  • 2017 – 2021 Tesla Model X
  • 2020 – 2021 Tesla Model Y

Recall summary

Due to a faulty over-the-air (OTA) software update issued by Tesla in October, the recalled cars may unexpectedly activate the emergency brake or falsely warn of a collision ahead

Background of the recall

This Tesla brakes’ failure issue was identified on the back of owners’ complaints after the update was performed.

After Tesla began working on the issue, it remotely deactivated the entire forward collision avoidance system. The LA Times reported that owners were not informed of this deactivation, which raised safety concerns.

Warning signs

A “warning message” is displayed in the instrument panel if the “false-positive braking” happens. The driver may also hear a “warning chime.”

Recall risks

This Tesla brakes’ issue can cause a collision if a car unexpectedly slams on the brakes ahead of faster moving traffic. The false warning messages and chimes can also distract drivers, also raising the risk of an accident.

Recent Tesla recalls

In July, the manufacturer recalled over 5,000 Model 3 and Model Y vehicles with incorrectly fitted seat belts, which increased the risk of an injury in a crash. Earlier that month, the same vehicles were subject to a recall due to the possibility of them losing tire pressure, as reported.

The company is also a subject to ongoing investigation for its vehicles’ failure to detect emergency vehicles in their path, as reported.

The repair

As of October 29, 99.8% of cars involved in this recall received an OTA update resolving the issue. If you are having issues, make sure your Tesla is set up for remote updates to receive this repair. Go to a dealer if you are having trouble connecting your Tesla to the internet.

MazdaSpeed6 and Mazda RX-8 recalled over fuel leak

Washington, D.C. – November 1, 2021 – Mazda (OTCMKTS:MZDAY) is recalling 13,891 sports cars over a fuel pump that may leak, increasing the risk of a fire. This recall greatly raises the risk of injury for the occupants of the car and nearby motorists and includes:

  • 2009 Mazda RX-8
  • 2010 Mazda RX-8
  • 2011 Mazda RX-8
  • 2006 Mazda MazdaSpeed6
  • 2007 Mazda MazdaSpeed6

The affected component is the “fuel pump mounting ring” with part number BN8F42167.  The MazdaSpeed6 vehicles are also known as Mazda6.

Recall summary

Vehicles affected by this recall have a fuel pump mounting ring that may crack, resulting in a fuel leak. The mounting ring is the part that attaches the pump to the fuel tank.

The ring may crack due to improper installation or because of heat coming off the engine and exhaust.

Recall risks

Fuel that sprays onto hot components in the engine compartment can easily ignite and cause a vehicle fire. This increases the risk of a crash, as flames and smoke may distract drivers and cause them to panic. Another risk is the inability to stop and leave the vehicle in time, leading to an injury or even death. For tips on what to do in the event of a fire, please visit this article about a recent Hyundai recall.

Warning signs

In case of a fuel leak, the owner may smell fuel or notice it under the parked vehicles.

Other Mazda recalls

The RX-8 and Mazda Mazda6 that are part of this notice are not part of any recent recalls.

In July, however, the manufacturer recalled over 260,000 Mazda3 vehicles due to the risk of airbag cover logos flying off during a collision and hurting the car occupants, as reported.

The repair

Dealers will install a new mounting ring on the affected vehicles to fix the issue. They will also add a thermal insulation pad to the fuel tank on RX-8 vehicles to improve heat resistance.

Notifications will be sent to owners around November 23, 2021.

Toyota recalls Prius hybrids that may stall

Plano, TX – November 1, 2021 – Toyota (NYSE:TM) is recalling 8,411 Toyota Prius hybrid vehicles over a concern that the hybrid system may shut down, causing a loss of power. This may cause cars to stall, increasing the risk of a crash. The affected models include:

  • 2022 Toyota Prius
  • 2022 Toyota Prius Prime

The affected component is the “Hybrid Vehicle ECU” with multiple part numbers that begin with “89981.”

Recall summary

The recall centers around faulty software with the car’s Electronic Control Unit (ECU), which is the part that controls all the electronic functions of the vehicle. The ECU may falsely detect an error on the affected vehicles and shut down the vehicle’s hybrid system, resulting in an immediate loss of power.

To the best of our knowledge, the Prius battery ECU is unaffected by this recall.

Recall risks

A loss in power can cause the vehicle to come to a sudden halt. As reported, stalling while driving may result in the car getting hit from behind, injuring both cars’ drivers and passengers.

Warning signs

The vehicle warning lights may come on, letting the driver know of the impending shutdown.

Other Toyota recalls

The 2022 Prius and 2022 Prius Prime have not been subject to any other recalls. Last year, older Prius models were recalled over a power loss issue. However, the affected component was a faulty inverter and not the ECU software.

Another recent Toyota recall included the 2019-2020 Toyota Yaris to fix a faulty fuel pump that increased the risk of stalling.

The repair

Toyota dealers will update the ECU software on the affected vehicles.

Owners will be notified on November 20, 2021.

Porsche recalls Taycan for hazard light issue

Atlanta, GA – October 30, 2021 – Porsche (OTCMKTS:POAHY) has recalled 11,827 2020 – 2021 Porsche Taycan electric vehicles whose hazard lights may come on automatically in the absence of an emergency. This issue increases the risk of an accident.

Recall summary

The recalled Taycan’s hazard lights are programmed to light up automatically in “non-emergency situations.” It is unknown under what circumstances this happens.

Recall risks

If these Porsche Taycans’ hazard lights are flashing in the absence of an emergency, this “could confuse other road users,” increasing the risk of a crash.

Warning signs

If the hazard lights are activated, the driver may notice the activation of the respective signage in the instrument cluster.

The repair

Porsche dealers will reprogram the headlights for free to remove the automatic hazard lights activation altogether. Recall notification letters with further instructions will be mailed to owners starting December 13, 2021.

Recent Porsche Taycan recalls

Stellantis recalls Ram ProMaster City to fix faulty turn signals

Auburn Hills, MI – October 29, 2021 – Stellantis (NYSE: STLA), which owns the Chrysler brand, has issued a recall for 23,853 Dodge Ram ProMaster City vans to address an issue with the turn signal indicators on the instrument panel. The problem may cause users to be unaware of inoperative turn signals, increasing the risk of a crash.

The faulty component is the “Body Control Module” (BCM) with part number 52214967.

Recall summary

When a turn signal bulb burns out, the signal fails and the signal indicator in the instrument cluster starts flashing faster to indicate that. However, the faulty software on the affected vehicles by this Chrysler recall may prevent the flashing rate on the instrument cluster from changing when the bulb is out. As a result, the driver may be unaware that the turn signals are not working.

Recall risks

Drivers who are unaware of turn indicators not signaling their intentions to other drivers increases the risk of a crash or injury and may cause accidents with tragic outcomes.

Other Stellantis recalls

Last month, the 2021 Dodge Ram ProMaster City was recalled to address unsecured child seats. Another Ram recall from September was conducted for Ram 1500, Ram 2500 and Ram 3500 trucks because of faulty airbag inflators.

The repair

To fix the issue, dealers will install an updated version of the software that controls the BCM. Chrysler will send notifications about the repair to vehicle owners on November 10, 2021.

Owners that have already paid to have the issue resolved will be reimbursed.

Ford recalls Ranger trucks with backrests not compatible with child seats

Dearborn, MI – October 27, 2021 – Ford  (NYSE:F) has recalled 37,625 cars whose backseat headrests are incompatible with some children’s car seats, making the seats difficult to install and improperly positioned. This increases the risk of an injury to the child in the seat if there is an accident.

The recall includes 2020 – 2021 Ford Ranger Super Cab trucks.

Recall summary

The trucks in question have a headrest positioned in a way that makes proper installation of taller children’s car seats difficult. The headrests in the backseats of this Ford truck recall are not removable, and may tilt some childrens’ car seats out of proper position.

Federal regulations require cars to be compatible with a wide range of different types and sizes of car seats. However, this headrest design was not checked against taller car seats.

Recall risks

Childrens’ car seats save lives, but they need to be securely attached and positioned on the seat in order to work properly. Learn more about child car seat safety in this article about a recent Nissan recall,

Warning signs

Owners may notice that it is difficult to install a child car seat in the back of the Ranger.

The repair

As Ford investigated this issue, the company also discovered the anchor points used to secure children’s car seats in the car were crooked. The remedy for this recall will address both issues: Ford dealers will check the car seat anchors and replace the headrests with an updated model. Ford will send owners recall notification letters with further instructions by November 19.

Nissan recalls hybrids with software issue causing stalls

Franklin, TN – October 24, 2021 – Nissan  (OTCMKTS:NSANY) has recalled 7,634 hybrid electric vehicles with a software issue that may stall the car. The recall includes:

  • 2014 – 2017 Infiniti QX60 Hybrid
  • 2015 – 2016 Nissan Murano Hybrid
  • 2014 – 2015 Nissan Pathfinder Hybrid

The affected component is the Hybrid Power Control Unit (HPCM) Module with multiple part numbers, including  237A13JV9B and 237A13JV9C.

Recall summary

A hybrid powertrain transfers “power to the driving wheels” of a hybrid car. The recall stems from an issue with the HPCM, a small computer that controls the car’s hybrid powertrain while monitoring other parts of the car. If the HPCM detects damage to a certain bearing, it may determine that the car is overheating and cut off the power, causing the car to stall.

Recall risks

Stalls pose a risk to drivers on the road, who may get hit by faster-moving traffic. Read more about stall-related safety issues in this article about a Chrysler recall.

The repair

Nissan and Infiniti dealers will reprogram the HPCM for free. Nissan will send owners notification letters with further instructions starting on December 3.

Recent Nissan recalls

Earlier this month, Nissan recalled over 10,000 Pathfinders with potentially defective headrests, and 5,895 more Pathfinders whose seats could detach during a crash. More stall-prone Infinitis were recalled this past spring due to a separate control module software issue.

Detaching windshields prompt 2021 Ford Mustang recall

Dearborn, MI – October 24, 2021 – Ford (NYSE:F) has recalled 17,692 Ford Mustang 2021 Mach-E SUVs whose windshields may detach, placing vehicle occupants at risk of accident or injury.

Recall summary

The recalled vehicles’ windshields may not be glued properly in place, violating federal safety standards. Ford did not disclose the cause of the problem in recall documents, but is conducting “on-going evaluations to confirm root cause” for this defect.

The company says they are unaware of any accidents or injuries resulting from these problems.

Warning signs

Ford Mach-E owners may notice the sound of wind whistling through the sides of the front windshield or water leaking around the edges.

Recall risks

Windshields that are not securely glued in place are at risk of cracking or even falling out of their frames. Occupants of the car could be injured by flying glass or other debris and may result in a crash. Additionally, unsecured windshields increase the chance of injury in an accident.

Other Ford recalls

In March, Ford recalled nearly 80,000 F-series trucks in February over loose windshields that were also poorly glued to the car. Unlike this recall, the cause was a known issue with primers and paints.

Earlier this month, over 13,000 2021 Ford Mustang Mach-E were also recalled for the same issue—inadequate urethane bonding—affecting their panoramic glass roof panels.

There is potentially some overlap between the two recalls as the total number of 2021 Mach Es sold in the U.S. as of the end of September was plus the stock at the dealerships or in transit was around 23,855. However, the sum of two recalls is around 31,326 meaning that over 7,000 cars are likely subject to both recalls.

Repair

Dealers will remove and reinstall the windshield for free, using proper gluing procedures to ensure the windshield is secure. Owners should receive a notification letter with further instructions between October 27 and November 3.

Hyundai Sonata cars recalled over faulty turn signals

Fountain Valley, CA – October 24, 2021 – Hyundai (OTCMKTS:HYMTF) has announced a recall for 469,377 Sonata cars that may have turn signals that flash in the opposite direction of what the driver intends, increasing the risk of a crash. The affected vehicles include:

  • 2015-2017 Hyundai Sonata
  • 2016-2017 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid
  • 2016-2017 Hyundai Sonata Plug-In Hybrid

The affected component is the “Smart Junction Box” with part numbers 91950-C1020, 91950-E6010 and 91950-E6030.

Recall summary

The issue stems from faulty software that incorrectly interprets which turn signal to activate. As a result, the left turn signal may flash when the right one is activated and vice versa.

There are no known crashes or injuries stemming from this problem.

The 2015-2017 Kia Sedonas have also been recalled over the same issue.

Warning signs

In an affected vehicle, the unintended turn signal direction will illuminate in the instrument cluster.

Recall risks

An inoperable or incorrect turn signal can confuse drivers around you, increasing the risk of an accident.

Other Hyundai recalls

Another recent 2017 Hyundai Sonata recall recently happened because of the risk of fire.

In this case, the 2017 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid problems stemmed from “premature wear” of the engine components, as reported. The recall also included the 2017 Hyundai Tucson.

The repair

Hyundai will notify affected owners on November 19, 2021. Dealers will update the software on the junction box to resolve the issue.
