Kia recalls vehicles with loose headliners

Irvine, CA – August 14, 2022 – Kia (OTCMKTS:KIMTF) is recalling 257,998 2012 – 2013 Kia Optima whose headliners  – the vehicles’ ceilings – may detach during a crash and hit the car occupants, increasing the risk of injury. 

Recall summary  

Headliners are plastic panels that are part of the interior trim. They serve two purposes. – One is to conceal the bare metal elements and wiring running above it, and the second is serve as a cushion in a crash.

In affected vehicles, headlines may not be sufficiently secured, allowing them to detach if a side curtain airbag deploys.

Recall risks

A piece of the interior trim that detaches during a crash and flies through the cabin may hit and injure the car occupants. 

Other Kia recalls

Both Kia and its parent company Hyundai are subject to an ongoing U.S. government investigation due to non-crash related fires, as reported.  The last Kia Optima recall due to this issue was in February, also as reported.

There were at least two Kia airbag recalls this year. In February, over 410,000 cars were recalled due to airbags potentially failing to deploy in a crash. In March, Kia Souls were recalled for the same reason, as reported.

Repair

Dealers will use an “industrial-grade adhesive tape” to secure the headliners in place. This repair is free of charge. 

Notifications to vehicle owners will be sent between September 26, 2022 and September 30, 2022.

Stellantis recalls Jeep SUVs with damaged tail lights

Auburn Hills, MI – August 13, 2022 – Stellantis (NYSE:STLA), which owns the Jeep and Chrysler brands, is recalling 99,186 vehicles with tail light side markers that do not illuminate, increasing the risk of a crash.

The following SUVs are included in this recall:

  • 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee
  • 2021 – 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee L

Recall summary

Tail light assemblies contain the brake lights, turn signals, reverse lights and marker lights. Side marker lights make the vehicle more visible and help other drivers judge its position, dimensions and direction.

The tail light assemblies in the subject vehicles may have been built with damaged side marker lights that do not illuminate as expected.

The components in question are the left and right side tail light lamp assemblies, with part numbers 68421132AD and 68421133AD.

Recall risks

A tail light side marker that does not illuminate can reduce the vehicle’s visibility to other drivers, increasing the risk of a crash.

Other recent Jeep and Chrysler recalls

In July, the U.S. government announced an investigation into Stellantis over stalling PHEV minivans. The investigation could lead to a Chrysler recall for the 2019-2021 Chrysler Pacifica  and 2019-2020 Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid.

One of the most recent Jeep Grand Cherokee recalls was in June, when the 2014 – 2020 models were recalled over a fuel pump failure.

Earlier in June, more than 200,000 2018 – 2019 Jeep Grand Cherokee vehicles were recalled over a problem with the brake system.

Repair

To address these Jeep tail light issues, dealers will inspect and, if needed, replace the tail lamp assemblies free of charge. Owners will be notified about the repair program on or around September 16, 2022.

Jaguar Land Rover recalls F-PACE SUVs over rear turn signal problem

Mahwah, NJ – August 13, 2022 – Tata Motors (NYSE:TTM), which owns Jaguar Land Rover, is recalling 5,297 2021–2022 Jaguar F-PACE SUVs over an issue with the rear signal lights, which could increase the risk of an accident.

Recall summary

Turn signals on a vehicle alert motorists and pedestrians as to which direction the driver intends to turn.

In the affected vehicles, incorrect tail lights may have been installed during assembly, preventing the rear turn signals from working properly and being seen by those driving behind the vehicle. 

The component involved in this recall is the tailgate mounted rear lamp with multiple part numbers, including T4A44678, T4A44679, and T4A44681.

Other Jaguar recalls 

In April 2022, Tata Motors recalled 14,812 Range Rover and Range Rover Sport vehicles over an issue with the seat belts. The seat belt emergency locking retractor could fail to lock when the seat belt webbing is yanked during an emergency, leading to an increased risk of injury.

In February 2022, a total of  18,824 Land Rover vehicles, among them Evoque SUVs for the 2020 model year, were recalled due to problems with the airbag.

There was a Jaguar F-PACE recall in September 2021 due to faulty seat belts for child seats. The recall also included other makes.

The repair

Dealers will inspect the Jaguar turn signals and replace the installed lamps with the correct ones. Repairs will be performed at no cost to owners.

Affected owners will be notified by September 16, 2022.

Daimler recalls Mercedes-Benz vehicles over risk of fire

Jacksonville, FL – August 13, 2022 – Daimler (OTCMKTS:DMLRY), which owns Mercedes-Benz, is recalling 27,330 vehicles over an issue with the transmission’s electrical system, which could lead to a fire. This increases the risk of injury and even death.

The recall covers the following models: 

  • 2019 – 2021 Mercedes-Benz AMG CLS53 
  • 2019 – 2023 Mercedes-Benz AMG E53 
  • 2021 – 2023 Mercedes-Benz AMG GT43 
  • 2019 – 2023 Mercedes-Benz AMG GT53
  • 2019 – 2023 Mercedes-Benz CLS450
  • 2021 – 2023 Mercedes-Benz E450  

Recall summary

The transmission uses a wiring harness to organize and protect the electrical cables within. In the affected vehicles, an overly tight harness could pull the wires’ protective insulation away from the electrical connector. This could leave the connector exposed to water, which can cause corrosion and a short circuit.

The component involved in this recall is the electrical wiring harness with multiple part numbers including A2135403969, A2135404069 and A2385400717.

Recall risks

A short circuit can lead to a fire, which could cause injury.

Warning signs  

Drivers may be alerted to an impending short circuit by either an illuminated yellow battery icon or a “4Matic malfunction” warning message on the dashboard instrument panel. 

Other Mercedes-Benz recalls  

Last month, a Mercedes-Benz recall was issued for 8,530 vehicles due to a problem with the rearview camera.  This was the latest in a string of Mercedes-Benz electrical issues.

In May 2022, there was a Mercedes-Benz AMG recall and a stop-drive notice for 292,287 vehicles over an issue with the braking system.  The recall also included R, GL and ML-class vehicles, as reported.

The repair

Dealers will check the electrical connectors on the affected vehicles and fix them as needed. An additional bracket will also be installed to reduce the tension on the harness.  Daimler says that repairs on all affected vehicles will be performed free of charge.

Affected owners will be notified by September 20, 2022.

Subaru recalls WRX cars over faulty rear lights, rearview camera issue

Camden, NJ – August 7, 2022 – Subaru (OTCMKTS:FUJHY) has issued a recall for 59,934 2015-2021 WRX sedans over “inoperative” rear lights and reverse camera. This increases the risk of a crash.

Recall summary

The backup light switch is responsible for activating the reverse lights on a car. Shifting the transmission to Reverse gear allows the switch to activate the rear lights and also engages the rearview camera.

On the affected vehicles, the backup light switch is exposed to heated oil. The sulfur in the oil can corrode the electrical contacts of the switch, and they will not be as efficient in conducting electricity. Eventually, this will cause the backup light switch to stop working.     

The cause of the defect is not clear but was replicated in tests conducted by the manufacturer under “excessive or abusive driving conditions.”

Warning signs

When the backup light switch has failed, drivers will notice that the “R” symbol will not appear on the dashboard when reverse gear is engaged. 

Other Subaru recalls 

In January 2022, the company issued a recall for 198,255 Ascent and Outback SUVs due to a malfunctioning transmission.

In May 2021, Subaru recalled 446,205 Impreza and Crosstrek vehicles over a problem with the engine control module or ECM. A programming failure on the component can lead to the engine stalling while the vehicle is being driven, increasing the risk of a crash.

Repair

Dealers will inspect and replace the faulty backup light switch with a new one. The repairs will be done free of charge, and Subaru will reimburse customers who availed of the remedy before the recall was announced.  

Affected owners will have been notified by September 19, 2022.

Nissan recalls SUVs, pickups over rearview camera defect

Franklin, TN – August 7, 2022 – Nissan (OTCMKTS:NSANY) is recalling 10,477 rental SUVs and pickup trucks over an issue with the rearview camera. The dashboard monitor may not display images from the rearview camera when the vehicle is reversing, increasing the risk of a crash. 

The recall covers the following models: 

  • 2022 Nissan Frontier 
  • 2021 Nissan Pathfinder 
  • 2022 Nissan Titan
  • 2021 – 2022 Nissan Rogue

Recall summary

These vehicles give customers the option of a radio service subscription as part of the rental.  Even if the customer declines the service, the In-Vehicle Infotainment (IVI) system will continue to search for radio channels, causing the system to reboot after a certain time. While the system is rebooting, the rearview camera will be unavailable.

The component involved in this recall is the IVI software program version, with multiple part numbers including 4612, 4618, 5319, 4901 and 4617.

Other Nissan recalls

Last month, Nissan recalled 180,176 Frontier and Titan trucks over a problem with the automatic transmission’s Park gear mechanism.

In January 2022, there was a Nissan Rogue recall spanning the 2014 to 2016 model years. Due to electric issues, these cars could catch on fire, as reported.

Repair

Dealers will perform an IVI software update on the affected vehicles. Alternatively, Nissan will also issue an over-the-air (OTA) software update to fleet owners. There will be no charge for the repair, as the issue can be resolved through the vehicles’ warranty policy.    

Affected owners will have been notified by July 29, 2022.

Volkswagen recalls SUVs that may stall while driving

Auburn Hills, MI – August 7, 2022 – Volkswagen (OTCMKTS:VWAGY), which owns the Audi brand, is recalling 49,443 SUVs whose fuel pumps may malfunction. This causes various running issues, including engine stalling, which increases the risk of an injury in the event of an accident.

Vehicles affected by this recall include: 

  • 2020 – 2021 Audi Q7
  • 2029 – 2021 Audi Q8

Recall Summary  

Listed SUVs have a fuel delivery module within the tank that transfers the gasoline towards the engine. In affected vehicles, a component inside this module may fall apart and damage the pressure sensor within the module. This results in incorrect fuel pressure, causing the engine to run rough or even preventing it from starting. In some cases, the fuel pump may fail resulting in the vehicle stall.

The component causing this recall is the fuel delivery module made by Vitesco Technologies, with part numbers 4M0919087F or 4M0919087G.   

Warning signs

Apart from the engine running issues, drivers may notice an “Emission control system” warning on the dashboard. 

Recall risks

A stalled car could get hit by faster-moving traffic, increasing the risk of an injury. 

Other Audi recalls

Some of these vehicles may have been affected by one of the Audi A8 recalls from May 2021, caused by a collapsing rear suspension.  

In addition, Audi is one of the car makers that has been facing a number of issues and consequent recalls caused by Takata airbags. 

Repair

Dealers will replace the fuel delivery module on affected vehicles with an improved version, whose design makes it resilient to pressure variations. This repair is free of charge. 

Notifications to vehicle owners will be sent on September 16, 2022.

Toyota recalls Tacoma vehicles with faulty child restraint systems

Plano, TX – August 3, 2022 – Toyota (NYSE:TM) is recalling 75,316 2022 – 2023 Toyota Tacoma pickup trucks with faulty child restraint systems, which increase the risk of an injury to the child in the event of a crash.

Recall summary

Almost all vehicles manufactured since 2022 are equipped with the LATCH system for securing car seats. The system includes lower anchors and upper anchors.

The lower anchors are the primary attachment points for a child’s car seat. The upper anchors, which are located behind the seat, attach to a tether on a front-facing car seat. The tether keeps the car seat from tipping forward in the event of a collision or sudden braking. 

In the subject vehicles, due a change in the welding process, the upper child seat anchor was not sufficiently welded to the vehicle’s frame. This means that the child seat could tip forward in the event of a collision. 

Recall risks

The defect increases the risk of injury to the seat’s occupant.

Safety tips

While the manufacturer does not explicitly state it, parents should be able to still secure their children using the retractor system.

Other recent Toyota recalls

There are no other major Toyota Tacoma recalls for the 2022-2023 model-years. However, in November 2020, there was a Toyota truck recall because of faulty fuel pumps, according to the National Transportation Highway Safety Administration (NHTSA). The recall included the 2017-2020 Tacoma trucks, as well as Lexus, Camry and Corolla vehicles.

While Toyota does not appear to have any other outstanding child seat anchor recalls, there was a recall in September of last year caused by faulty retractors. Read more here.

Repair

Toyota has yet to finalize the remedy program. Owners will receive letters with more information between September 2, 2022 and September 15, 2022.  All repairs will be free of charge.

Jaguar recalls SUVs with malfunctioning seat belts

Mahwah, NJ – August 3, 2022 – Tata Motors (NYSE:TTM), which owns Jaguar Land Rover, has recalled 4,927 SUVs whose seat belts may not tighten properly in an accident. This increases the risk of an injury.

Vehicles affected by this recall include: 

  • 2022 – 2023 Land Rover Defender 
  • 2022 – 2023 Land Rover Discovery
  • 2022 – 2023 Land Rover Discovery Sport 
  • 2022 – 2023 Range Rover Sport
  • 2022 – 2023 Range Rover Velar

Recall summary  

The pretensioner is part of the seat belt retractor, whose job is to tighten the seat belt and secure the occupant. On affected vehicles, damaged pretensioners may have been installed during manufacturing in the driver and front seat passenger seats. As a result, they could fail to operate as intended during a crash. 

The component in question is the seat belt assembly made by the Swedish-American supplier Autoliv, which was recently in the center of another seat belt recall that affected over 266,000 vehicles across different manufacturers, as reported.

Part numbers differ depending on the particular model, but include CPLA-611B08-AC8AAM and LK72-611B08-AB8PVJ.  

Recall risks

Pretensioners that fail to deploy as intended prevent the seat belt from tightening properly in a crash, increasing the occupant’s risk of injury. 

Other Land Rover and Range Rover recalls

In April, the company recalled a batch of Range Rovers over a problem with the seat belt’s emergency locking retractors. The retractors were also manufactured by  Autoliv.

In February, the 2020 Land Rover Range Rover Evoque SUVs were recalled over faulty airbag system, as reported.

The repair

Dealers will check the pretensioner assembly on affected vehicles and replace it if needed. The repair is free of charge. 

Notifications to vehicle owners will be sent on September 16, 2022.
